@ellidominusser11387 ай бұрын
@@brettk9316 If you look at history, there are many countries that have lost wars because it wasn't interesting to them. The austrian Habsburgs preferred their bigger austrian lands and since the swiss fought good, they just gave it up as it wasn't worth it. But overall, I think Austria just simply doesn't have a big military history, after all, the habsburgs were known for their marrying, not their amazing Military, though there were definitely times were the Habsburgs did have one of the strongest armies and generals in Europe, like Eugene of Savoy (though that was a French guy serving the Habsburgs) And lastly the struggle against the turks wasn't really a loss until 1683, it was just a stalemate, and the few hussars that the poles sent did help, but there were many more troops from the HRE and Austria that were coming to aid. Austria just isn't a (comparably to France, UK, Germany and Russia) military focused state.

@@brettk9316 Ellidominusser1138 has sadly no clue what he is writing about. I study history but my knowledge is more attuned to the middleages than early modern times but I did do some reading. Austria won roughly 2/3 of the wars it was involved in ( defensive and offensive ), others were stalemates, others were lost. Austria sat on the eastern fringe of the holy roman empire and was consistently threatened by eastern tribes which had to be fended off repeatedly ( those included Magyars but also -Huns- Mongols and later, the Ototmans ). The Habsburgs definetely had a capable military through most of history simple due to that necessity. The wars with the Ottoman Empire were not between Austria and the beforementioned alone but did include a large alliance of realms like Russia, the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth which clashed - like Russia - on their border with the Ottomans repeatedly. This military aimed at fighting the Ottomans struggled after initial victories against Revolutionary France once Napoleon took over but adapted ( from 1790s to 1812 a lot changed in the structure and make-up of the military ) and gave Napoleon some of the stinging defeats in the Napoleonic Wars ( Aspern-Essling, Leipzig ). Wagram was a loss for Austria but the Army was not destroyed but managed an ordered withdrawal while also inflicting significant losses on Napoleon's Army. However, post world war 1 the incentive was to downplay Austria(-Hungary's) ability and present it was a failed state. This lead to a number of ahistorical statements that made it into common knolwedge that are constantly repeated. Public history is always behind the curve of historical studies. We see this post world war 2 as well; the presentation of world war 2 has been warped due to German General's memoires yet they are filled with lies ( see Doktor Roman Töppls interviews ).

Your translation is incorrect. The lake is called "Vierwaldstättersee", where a "Stätte" is a term for a place, not a city. So the translation would be more like "Lake of the four forest places", which would be in line with the term "forest cantons" for the cantons Uri, Schwyz and Unter-/Nidwalden, and the canton of Lucerne. In line with that the French name for the lake is "Lac de Quatre-Cantons" and the Italian name is "Lago dei Quattro Cantoni" (and Romansch "Lai dals Quatter Chantuns"), which all translate to "Lake of (the) four Cantons".
@Stormgamer-xb7gv8 ай бұрын
@@JanB1605 well depends. In the region around that lake that i am from, people refer to it as a synonyme. Because Place or city is pretty equal as there are 4 cantons around it with 4 major cities. But it could be that the definition has changed in time. Anyway. Have a Good Day my Swiss Brother 🇨🇭

The Habsburg castle still exists today in the Canton of Aargau. Also, the Habsburgs were the protectors of the monastery of Einsiedeln, which was raided a year prior to the battle of Morgarten. The Habsburgs were obligated to react as did Charles the Bold 1476 when he was obliged to protect the lands of his ally the Count of Savoy. The Swiss were the aggressors in many cases but since they won almost all battles, they were direct subjects of the Emperor and had none between to rule them. Bern was the mightiest free city (freie Reichsstadt) north of the Alps thanks to its huge possessions and allies. In later times, the Swiss became so famous and feared that other professional warriors from all over Europe joined their ranks.

This is epic! Hello this Cédric and Mattia from outerspace talking. We‘re currently living in the miraculous Sempach itself. The meaning of this battle to the people of sempach is probably simmilar to those of other towns or cities to their historial memorials. First of all, we learn about it in school of course. I‘d say, every ten year old knows about the battle, winkelried and when it took place. 1386, which is also the name of a local beer brewery. (We actually made a short movie with one of the 4 dudes running the brewery). Winkelried though, everybody loves him. He‘s percieved as the guy who basically saved switzerland from the Habsburgers. The place of the monument is literally named „slaughter“ („Schlacht“). We still have few of the old parts of our city walls. We even got a tower named „witchtower“ (Hexenturm), a corner-tower of the inner city back, from 600 years ago. Nevertheless sempachs drug culture is thriving for sure. Thanks for reading ☮️

It’s a modern historian issue. Many of them can’t believe the ability of great men, to this for example many say that Shakespeare wasn’t really one guy but several. And the evidence for this is, “one person couldn’t possibly have done all of that”. Seems to be an in vogue way of thinking for historians.
@charlesdarwin35806 ай бұрын
@@James-sk4db With all my respect, you obviously don't know shit about modern historians and historical research. Theories on the authorship of Shakespeare's works date from the 19th century, and no current scholar takes them seriously, precisely because nowadays, we no longer rely on the simple impression that “one person couldn’t possibly have done all of that”. Concerning Winkelried, historians doubt his existence because none of the many Swiss or Austrian sources speaks of him (unnamed) before 1476, a century later (the name of Winkelried does not appear before 1532).

Swiss Celts did conquer Rome way back. After Ceaser you did have the invasion by the allemans. While incidents like the Swiss stealing from the Monastery Einsiedeln (under Habsburg protection) where not uncommon in the middle ages, normally the punishment expeditions were successful. In case of the Swiss, their ambush tactics and they arrogance of the nobility combined to major success for the Swiss. Success that allowed to develop better weapons and tactics. Combine that with the "unbreakable" cheat, and it was impossible the face the swiss in battle until you had enough firepower, fortified position and some landsknechts (or pike and shot units).
@eljanrimsa58438 ай бұрын
The Alemanni took over the region during the later stages of the Roman Empire. After that they were pretty much left alone, at least in the more mountainous parts. The House of Zähringen, which had been the predominant family in the early Middle Ages and founded Bern in the 12th century, had a hands-off approach to ruling and didn't meddle much in local affairs. After the Zähringer died out in the 13th century, the Habsburgs took over or tried to take over many areas with a more centralized rule. That's where the resistance started in the backwoods areas around Lake Lucerne. A contributing factor was that at that time merchant cities everywhere were growing in power relative to the feudal lords. Zürich and Bern joined the fight to further their own interests. A geopolitical factor why big powers became interested in the region, may have been the opening of the Gotthard route in the 13th century. All of a sudden, Uri and Schwyz were key locations to control the shortest route over the Alps from much of Western Europe.

To refer to the Habsburg as Austrians isn’t accurate for the birth of Switzerland. The Habsburg family comes from the municipality of Habsburg in the Canton of Aarau in Switzerland. Rudolf I, Count of Habsburg, became King of the Holy Roman Empire in 1273 and appointed his sons as dukes of Austria in 1278 after defeating Ottokar II of Bohemia. In other words, a conquest of Austria by the house of Habsburg following the extinction of the Babenbergs and defeat of competing contenders. Rudolf I died in July 1291 and his heir attempted to revoke the freedoms (granted by Rudolf I) of the first 3 Cantons who signed the Swiss Pact in August 1291. The Habsburg were then forced to abandon their ancestral home in Switzerland in favor of Austria as a result of the battles following the signing of the Swiss Pact… Basically, the Habsburg were Swiss who created the Austrian empire, not Austrians that attempted conquer Switzerland

This is of course not the case (same as current Germany has no Germanic culture) as only about the last 200 years is relevant to form the Swiss Ethnic (as well as any other country also). And to form current Switzerland France was much more important hand has much more influence in culture then Germany had (the first modern Swiss Federal State called 'Helvetic Republic' was formed under the influence of the French revolution): The number plate for cars is CH (Confederatio Helvetica). The currency is CHF (Confederatio Helvetica France). The official name of this country is Confederatio Helvetica. In many foreign languages, this country is called 'Helvetii'. The first Swiss historiens refered to the Helvetii (Weisse Buch von Sarnen 1470) and the 'Chronicon Helveticum' (1532) from Aegidius Tschudin, the first Swiss Historien who wrote down the history of the Swiss Helvetic Confederation of the years 1001 till 1470. After the Swiss loos the batle of Marignano 1515 the French King Francois I said 'I beat the one (the Helvetii) that no one has beaten since Caesar. The first Swiss Federal State with a constitution was called the'Helvetic Republic'. The first Swiss constitution was proclaimed on 12 April 1798 in the pro-French, traditional Swiss town of Aarau and is considered the founding date of the Helvetic Republic. Switzerland is full of remembers and referings to their Helvetics descends but nothing, but absolutley nothing to any kind of Allemanics except the fact that different tribes with different names (but they have not called themself Alemanic at this time) has immigrated into Switzerland in the years arround 500.

And thus thrusted himself upon the spears and, brawn and tall as he was, Arnold grabbed and held the spears, pushing them down with his body upon which the Swiss forces rushed onwards and won the Battle at Sempach. Although the words are more likely to be fictitious, at least to some degree, Arnold's brothers in arms held true to his last wish and founded trusts to help soldiers and their families in need. These "Kantonale Winkelriedstiftungen" (Winkelried-trusts of the Cantons) still exist today.

The brave charge of Arnold reminded me of that Portuguese knight who didn't allow the castle door to be closed with his own body, which led to the capture of Lisbon from the moors

That's a very low number of troops fielded by Leopold. Only 4000? why? Surely the Austerian empire could've fielded more troops for the conquest of the region

They were just going on a little expedition to punish some local thieves and vagabonds (the swiss had disrespected property under habsburg protection). that's what we swiss were basically at the time. outlaw alliance. with excellent ambush tactics. most battles (after stripping the legends), the snubby nobility was charging headlong into a ambush, getting pelted and forcibly dismounted by rockfall and then slaughtered. while the swiss troops basically had the "unbreakable" cheat from start, it was only latter they got the armament and the tactics to face armies in open battle.

Well, we are still in the outgoing medieval times - not the 18th century or so - and Europe sufferered heavy population loss (1/3 of Europe) 1346-1353 due to the Black Death. Also the Habsburgs were not Emperors of the HRE at the time and it was still the Archduchy of Austria only - for the most part the same size of Austria as we know it today - and not the Empire of the 1500s ff (that really took off with Maximilian marrying Maria of Burgundy in 1477).

I think 4000 knights + merceneries were expensive enough

Great Video !! But if I may correct, you might wanna consider learning the true pronunciation of the names, like Schwyz, actually pronounced Shveetz, or Freiburg, the first part is good, but the end is -oorg, not -urg; just little details like that ☺️ otherwise thank you heaps for making those videos on our unknown albeit amazing medieval history ! A fellow Suisse from kanton Freiburg !! 😊

It would be important to mentio. That Arnold vpn Winkelried cried out to his comrades to look out for his wife and child before he sacrificed himself.

Very interesting video, that covers much more than just the battle of Sempach. Thanks for making it. Just a note, "Sempach" is not pronounced "Sempak". The last "ch" is more like the one in "Loch", in Scotland (Loch Ness, for instance).
