Battle of Lake Erie 1813

Oliver Hazard Perry's victory over the Royal Navy squadron on 10 Sept 1813 caused the total surrender of all British vessels on the lake. It was the first of the two Royal Navy lake squadrons to surrender during the war. The victory was of dual importance. Realizing that Barclay could not support him any longer, Gen. Procter pulled back into Upper Canada, retreating and leaving Ft. Detroit to be re-captured by the surging American forces. Once the Americans had caught up with Procter and Tecumseh's forces they decisively defeated both of them at Thames, swinging the tide of the war in the region in favor of the US forces.
