Watch our full documentary in HD online, narrated by Sam Worthington (Avatar, Terminator Salvation) - www.battleoflongtan.com Here is the very moving story that 60 Minutes (Nine Network) Australia did on the Battle of Long Tan. It was broadcast on 13 August 2006, a few days prior to the premiere of my award winning Battle of Long Tan documentary narrated by Sam Worthington (Avatar, Terminator Salvation, Clash of the Titans) on The History Channel.
I tracked down the former Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Long Tan veterans and we interviewed them for our documentary. We were then able to help organise this story for 60 Minutes and it was the first time in 40 years the former enemy had admitted that Australia actually won the battle (but of course lost the war).
The story is called Forgotten Heroes, Producer is Hamish Thomson and the reporter is Peter Harvey.
For three and a half hours in the mud and shattered trees of a rubber plantation called Long Tan, 105 young Australians and 3 New Zealanders fought and defeated 2,500 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers in an epic battle. 18 Australians were killed and 21 wounded with more than 500 VC and NVA killed with more than 1,000 wounded.

My uncle was part of the 161st kiwi artillery. He told me that one of the guns they used overheated so bad that they scraped it. He also said that when him & his mates went too look at the site of where their bombs landed. It was flippin horrible. Not a good sight. Thank you uncle for your service.

When we (U.S.) ran secret recon missions into Cambodia, and our government could not fly in to support us (due to diplomatic red tape), there were Australian pilots who would disobey direct orders to fly in to support us by air. So I just want to say, god bless those pilots for what you did and I'll always support the Aussies

Yes definitely... they're embarrassed to show their feelings at the start and bagging the VC soldiers without actually meaning it. But by the end the bravado/ego has gone and they can share the feelings with them. It is beautiful when I see the Aussie bravado give way to real connection between men.

Was with the 135 Assault Helicopter Company in Nam right after the Australians stood down. It was the only Army helicopter company that had Australians attached to them. Heard nothing but great things about them. Great pilots & drinkers. EMU ( experimental military unit ) & Get the bloody job done were our motto. Always wanted to go on a month long vacation consisting of a week visiting Viet Nam & rest of time in Australia. My older brother also a Nam Vet years ago spent a month in vacation in Australia.

As a Yank, I smile at the fierce resolve of our ANZAC, Canadian and British allies. There’s something about the spirit of independence and freedom that Anglo Saxon culture has brought to the world. Happily we’ve extended that spirit to others although empires have faded as a result. Peace to Vietnam and other Euro colonized countries in Asia , Africa, Latin America, the Mideast and Caribbean. It took us many years to acknowledge their equal yearning for freedom. Hopefully we will put inter-human war to rest.

We here in Australia, have come accustomed to hearing the word 'hero' bandied about every other day. So called heroes because that have saved Australia's name in some simple sporting contest and they brought home the cup or won a bloody gold medal. Nothing dangerous or the chance of losing life, yet the newspapers and television news, hails them as heroes. As do their local communities and provide them with the key to city and a procession through the streets. Give me strength to understand this rubbish. True heroes do what they do and they do it because that is what they are made of. They do it without being acknowledged or expecting to be so. These magnificent men, against all odds, are the true heroes of our country.

I agree with you 100%. Here in America it is the same problem. Our heroes are criticized and disrespected by people who don't agree with the politics behind war, or are against war in general. Soldiers have no say in what wars they fight, they follow orders that come from our presidents and they do it without question because, as you said, that's what heroes do. I also find it shameful that the Australians do not get the recognition in our country for being our allies in Vietnam and the lives that they sacrificed. They are rarely mentioned in American programs about that war. Much respect and thanks to the brave Aussies who fought and died alongside our boys over there.

It's strange, yet Fascinating to watch 2 foes who brutally fought each other decades back come to meet one another with kindness and respect. I'm glad to see they no longer carry whatever hate they may of had; that somewhere they decided to let that part of them go and find a bit of peace in their lives. My Uncle was part of the Bushmasters back in WW2 and wrote a letter to my Mom saying he had met these Aussies; and found them Jovial fellows, fun to talk to and Tough as Nails. He wrote how glad they were on our team because he sure would hate to go against them. Sadly, I never got to meet my Uncle as he was killed On the Last Day of the War by Friendly Fire. As some know, the Bushmasters at that time were made up of Southern Arizona and New Mexico Indian Tribes, Apaches, Pimas, Maricopas and a few other southern tribes including my Uncle who was a Quechan. He said the Aussies always treated his regiment with such respect and were always curious about these Indian Warriors of the U.S. One curious fellow asked my Uncle if he had brought his "Tomahawk". My Uncle laughed and said, "No, but I did bring my Machete." The Bushmasters love their Machetes since they were trained in Jungle warfare in Panama. My Uncle said to my Mom that these White guys over here treated him better than the whites in the U.S. I have a great deal of Respect for the Aussies and am pleased that my Uncle got to meet such wonderful people before his end.

I salute the Australians who served in Vietnam. I had infrequent contact with Australian troops but my observation was that they had high morale, were gung ho, good fighters and provided all their own weapons and equipment and uniforms. I was at Bien Hoa AB from Nov. '68 to Nov. '69, when some 15,000 American troops were killed and many more wounded. I was with the 3rd Security Police Squadron charged with defending the air base against ground attack. Those were exciting times and we experienced more in that one year than most people experience in a lifetime. I salute you Australian Vietnam Veterans.

The Australians, South Korean Marines and Canadian volunteers all fought in Vietnam along with the Americans. Each group distinguished themselves not just as soldiers but as warriors. I was with the First Marine Air Wing in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969 and remember our commanders talking about the strength and excellence our allies. I can't say any group was better than any other I will just say they were all the best. I was proud to serve with them.

My hat is off to the Aussies, I have had so many Vietnam vets tell me about the war and even family members, I am American and I am really happy to see the Vietnamese North Vietnamese and Vietcong and all Vietnamese civilians be so warm to their once enemies The Americans and the Aussies as well as our other allies that fought in The Vietnam War, I admire the Vietnamese as much as my own family members and friends that served in that God forsaken war, it takes a hell of a brave person to meet their enemies and break the bread and drunk together, we are ALL brothers in arms, I wish we would all love one another, treat each other with respect and dignity and my greatest hope is that one day mankind will find a better way to settle disputes then to declare war on each other, there has got to be a better way and I think everyone in the world could learn a lot from all the Vietnam veterans especially the ones that have made their way back to Vietnam and met their adversaries and settle their differences and showing each other respect and dignity and kindness and even love,, God bless you all...

Here in Great Britain I know of the brave Australians at Long Tan , Those men were sent by politicians to do a job and they did all that was asked of them and more , they fought like Lions and all they got in return was to be disowned by their own government and many Australians, shame on a country that does that to men who fought and died for their country , they should have been welcomed back as heroes , if you think the Australians had no place being in Vietnam then take it up with the politicians not the soldiers who did what was asked of them .

I was startled, it seemed surreal. Another time we had to land short of our destination, wound up on top of an Australian camp. They met us, insulted us, we got in a short fist fight, next thing you know they were getting us completely drunk. at 4:10 the narrator mentions the Viet Cong has been hardened by decades of war, first against the French and then the ARVN and US forces... he forgot the Japanese occupation of WW2. My mother in law and her children had tied to those VC who fought in those war between 1966-1973. One time when i was alone with her, I asked her about the war, she told me briefly about helicopter dropped off the troops right in front of her house and these troops started search her house....her story was quickly hush off by her children (brothers in law and sisters in law). She is 84yo and live in Long An all her life. Every where i go i felt like someone watch behind my back.

It's a long story and o won't tell again here but My LRRP team was overseen by two Companies of RFPFs led by Australian Officers. They fought a large force of NVA in the early morning hours of November 14,1968 possibly saving my team and me. Thank you Aussies.

Not many people know that there were other soldiers in Veitnam, not just the U.S, some of our Canadian Troops were there as well, the Canadian Government was unoffically invovled, just like the Boer War. Veitnam started as IndoChina was going against the French, but then quickly ended up being Americas War. I am not downing ANY soldier at all. I have mad respect for every soldier. Including out past enemies. They fought for their country, and I will fight for mine. Good on ya Austrailia!

Respect to you lads, on both sides. Such few numbers and a massive kill count like that against an enemy that has been campaigning for twenty years continually on that same land is a mind blowing military achievement.

the Australian Army I have one thing for them. My solute and my respect to them , thank you for your service in Nam for helping so many for their freedom. Today's war on terror is a different story terrorists don't wear uniforms as they disguise themselves with the innocent population. As an American I say to all free men and women fighting to preserve freedom thank you for your service.

Yes, as an Aussie 60 minutes should have made it clear that they were Kiwi artillery. Just like at Beersheba and Kapyong or however it is spelt.

Too right. My uncle was in 161 Bty, and fired the first shell that day. Sadly he passed away two weeks ago, tho it was great to hear some of his Vietnam brothers talk about the Battle of Long Tan at his funeral.

Most of the comments seem to be that the vietcong had been fighting since fighting the French but in reality they have been fighting the Japanese before that.
