@AWtify

@@vontai4553 Given that most uneducated Westerners believe that it is always winter in Russia, it is strange that they always invade Russia in summer uniforms. There can only be one explanation: the Western general staffs are more aware of the geography and expected to occupy Russia during the summer months. If this did not work, then there is only one explanation: the heroic resistance of the Russians and the heavy losses of the occupiers.
@MagiconIce
@MagiconIce 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but the Russians were (and still are) used to it. Russia has in Winter a way harsher climate (just like most of Eastern Europe) than Central Europe. So they knew, if not exactly by date by season, what's going to come.
@MagiconIce
@MagiconIce 3 жыл бұрын
@@AWtify Allegedly, Hitler said, that wars are not decided by the weathers, when he ignored the warnings of his generals before Barbarossa, that the troops should bring their winter gear, since that would've meant extra logistical strain and would've slowed the advance into the Soviet Union. If he would've listened to his generals arguing for an early push towards Moscow, he maybe even would've been right in this case. But that is a "What if"-scenario, nothing less, maybe the Germans would've cut off Moscow and besieged it, maybe it would've entered a guerilla warfare state with Red Army Units entrenching in the metro and fighting the Germans from there. And maybe the Reserves from the East then would've committed to a counter attack in Winter freeing the capital city of the USSR and still pushing back the Germans. In the real history, that took place, Hitler slowed it down and so Weather became the deciding factor. And imho the General Staff could've known this and Hitler too, since Napoleon, relatively spoken, fared worse about 130 years earlier, due to similar tactics the Russians employed back then, scorched Earth, retreat into the wide land, let the Enemy overextend and then strike back hard in Winter.

@@cs03gsboom69 That is a moot point because its totally historic hindsight. In late 1941 the Leningrad siege was brand new so there was no way for anybody to know that would last until Jan 1944. That would be for the German perspective, there was no way to have known. If you are speaking from a Russian perspective and how they would defend Moscow compared with the Leningrad siege or even battle of Stalingrad, well I think we know the answer. However I am curious, is there any documents on what the Soviets planned to do if the Germans attacked Moscow.

Just one thing I would like to point out, it's not that submission was never in Stalin's vocabulary, during the initial phase of Operation Barbarossa, loads of Ukrainians welcomed germans as they were fed up with Stalin. Germans rewarded them by mass killings of Ukrainians and other Slavs that were captured. Once the Soviets realized this, they choose to fight until the last man, if every last man had died, then every last woman would have picked up the gun. When you realize that the occupying force is not interested in winning the war, but trying to exterminate you and your people, the human zeal to survive kicks in and will make you fight till your last breath.

It’s a common trope to say Hitler constantly disregards his generals to make stupid decisions, but it’s not really that simple. Both he and his generals made mistakes. Bread and coal, in the Ukraine and Caucuses, were critical to Germany and it was strategically vital for Hitler to gain access to them. Not to mention that if the Germans had advanced straight to Moscow they would have faced a stronger enemy in an even more vulnerable position than they did in reality.

As a personal note, a lot of my family members are from both Bryansk and the Kaluga oblyast (myself born and most of my mothers side from a small town slightly south of Kaluga). The whole oblyast was heavily fought over and the town i originally came from, Ludinovo is known to change sides about 3 times by the middle of the 1942 with bitter fighting especially around the marshes and riverside of the city with many heroes (albeit some more local than anything else). Such stories are very common across all the eastern front and although a lot of the material is in Russian some of it was translated.

After the war it was easy for the generals to say: "Hitler was wrong and if he would have listened to us, we would have won in 2 months..." Hitler was of course no expert in warfare but his decisions until the end of 1943 were not that bad or inlogical as many think.

For the sake of accuracy, the "Rasputsitsia" or "General Cold" have equally affected both sides tactics wise. It is just Russian knew a bit better how to survive in these conditions. Nevertheless, the actual fighting was impeded for both sides. Even the argument about Wehrmacht being ill-equipped for fighting in cold weather conditions (aircraft fuel freezing just at -18C, weapons lubricant were not suitable for cold weather) leaving the lack of winter equipment are easily matched by the physical lack of military hardware Soviets were suffering from due to loss of the manufacturing base/factories being in the middle of relocation. Let's not forget the land lease convoys just started to arrive. It is actually a very interesting topic in terms of what was the most crucial thing supplied - which would probably be perhexiline gunpowder

Yes and NO. Yes, the Soviets got the same amount of winter, cold and misery as the Germans, but..... 1. The Soviets had better suited uniforms and fighting gear suited for the weather conditions.(Tested and proven by Battlefield Detectives). 2. The Soviets were more mechanized than the Germans and did not have to rely on horse drawn wagons or bother to feed or care for the thereto required horses. 3. The Soviet military verhicles were FAR better suited for (basically non-existing) infrastructure. 4. Soviet fuel was better formulated to deal with winer conditions that would turn German Diesel fuel into useless butter. 5. Soviet lubricants for weapons were either better suited to conditions (or non-existent, which is fine as well for a while.). German weapons froze and stalled on the used grease and cold solidified oils. 5. The Soviets were used to the local conditions and were better preconditioned for generic deprivation and maltreatment. In short, They were tougher, meaner and like honey-badgers. 6. The Germans collectively suffered from moerate to severe withdrawal sysmptoms because they had run out of meth ("Panzerschokolade" Pervitin) that had kept them 'hopping high' ever since 1939. As one might be aware of: "Wizz" and normal Winter are already a really bad combination so when Russian Winter hit....need I say more??

They replaced them. But not fast enough to keep up with the conscription of the red army. And because of the huge distance between germany and moscow the replacement and replenishment was a big logistical task. The german losses on the frontline weren't replacable. Especially because many of those soldiers were professionals and very battle-hardened. The new conscripts hadn't the same quality.

Of course. The main logistical knot of the Soviet Union with all its high tier industries and production is a completely useless area to capture. If only Hitler would be as dumb as you the war could have ended the same year it started... in BERLIN.

This video was uploaded in 29th of September, my grandpa's birthday. He was only one year old when the Nazis were stopped at the gates of Moscow, he and his mother and sisters escaped to dushanbe while his father stayed on the front lines as a war advocate or something like that. He judged Germans as a Jew and traitors who cooperated with nazis or soldiers who tried to escape.

Operation Redbeard, it would have been interesting to what would have happenee had they captured Moscow. Some historians say it would lead to victory, others state it would make no difference. Some Russians alive back then say it would collapsed the country and I know Glantz doesnt buy that. After 6 months of defeat after defeat, losing the capital may have perhaps seen Stalin's downfall from a general or someone along those lines. Many who hated living under Stalin may have seen it as a chance to dispose of him. I'm speculating here now. All railroads did go through Moscow so having the city cripples others parts of the country and gives the Russians a much harder time logisticaly. Such an epic battle of total destruction. Massive in scope and brutality

"Many who hated living under Stalin"? Wow man you dont even have a clue about history of Soviet Union. Most ppl would readily die for him in those times. Even total defeat of Red Army and losing all the major cities to Germans would only mean the begining of all-out partisan war.

Not sure taking Moscow was ever viable. Heavily fortified, one of the biggest cities of the world... the fighting would have been far worse than in Stalingrad. And being the center of the train network doesn't just mean it's a huge setback to lose that city, it also means tgat resupplying and reinforcing is easier than anywhere else in the country.

@red_amoguss
@red_amoguss 3 жыл бұрын
While the Germans were well-armed and numerically superior, the Soviets had several advantages in the Battle of Moscow that secured their victory; the most prominent of these can be summed up as home-field advantage: shorter supply and communication lines, more plentiful manpower reserves to draw from for the purposes of fighting and setting up defenses as well as the added morale benefit associated with fighting for your homeland. The Soviets took much heavier losses throughout the invasion, especially in the beginning, but they could replace those losses more easily than the Germans could. The long and ineffective supply lines of German forces just couldn’t support the logistical demands of their massive armies and their effectiveness suffered greatly as a result. Additionally, although its role has been over exaggerated in modern times, the weather was undoubtedly on the Soviet side, with the rasputitsa bogging down the Germans until the brutal winter set in, which the Soviets were far better prepared for. It’s certainly an exaggeration to claim that winning the Battle of Moscow would have meant a German victory on the Eastern Front. It may have increased their chances, but even if they had seized the capital, they would have still needed to solve their logistical problems that had been plaguing them since the start of the campaign. The only way that Operation Barbarossa could have ever truly succeeded was if the USSR and its inhabitants had chosen to submit, but any student of history will know, that submission was never a word in Stalin’s vocabulary.

The term _"total war"_ doesn't refer to war of annihilation, it refers to total production change in order to support the war, that is the home front have to live on rations that are just enough for sustenance, the rest goes to the soldiers.
