I believe the battle of Oive-Gorari was also the first time the Japenese had been comprehensively out-maneuvered during the war, leading to a withdrawal turning into a rout and such massive losses not just of men but of equipment and supplies.

Now the war is a week from it's key moment, The US initiative combined with the means by the first time since Pearl Harbor make the US fleet the most powerfull one even with just a carrier. Horii's demise was pretty shocking for the troops however. While the Ichiki detachement had been anhilated in the first battle since 1937 it was considered a misfortune, where their commander was killed alongside his troops, but now a commander so close to take Port Moresby died and his troops are leaderless

From what I've heard, the Japanese didn't believe the westerners would be willing to march and fight through jungle: an idea partly based on Japan's racism (thinking the westerners were too decadent,) and partly on Japan's early success in the war, where the British did indeed get caught flat-footed with such fighting. As seen in the video, it didn't take too long for the Japanese to begin paying dearly for using that as an excuse to neglect defensive warfare.

The extended campaign at Guadalcanal burned up a huge amount of Japanese resources & that may have otherwise gone to Papua New Guinea . By the time the Japanese tried to reinforce PNG they had lost to much territory & men in a series of battles against the Australians as they retreated back to Buna- Gona . Air support by Americans flying Dakotas played a big part. The battle of Wau aka The Black Cat track was significant victory .

Both suffers nature's given hell on their career, and both are stubborn enough to ponder just how unlucky the situation they were in to a point they refused to acknowledged the situation. Both the Japanese 41st infantry regiment and 144th infantry regiment participated in this campaign were veterans of the war with China. This just again shows that the experience in China is completely non-transferable against the Allies. Chinese armies were badly organized and supplied and their soldiers were badly fed and trained, not to mention Chinese armed forces had very little in terms of heavy weapons, even a platoon mortar were considered "heavy" for the Chinese.
