Just a short Video with a bit Sound,
The Liberation of Paris (also known as the Battle for Paris) was a military action that took place during World War II from 19 August 1944 until the German garrison surrendered the French capital on 25 August 1944. Paris had been ruled by Nazi Germany since the signing of the Second Compiègne Armistice on 22 June 1940, after which the Wehrmacht occupied northern and western France.
The liberation began when the French Forces of the Interior-the military structure of the French Resistance-staged an uprising against the German garrison upon the approach of the US Third Army, led by General George Patton. On the night of 24 August, elements of General Philippe Leclerc's 2nd French Armored Division (the 9ème Compagnie de Combat, Régiment de marche du Tchad, a mechanized infantry unit led by Captain Raymond Dronne, and composed primarily of exiled Spanish republicans), made its way into Paris and arrived at the Hôtel de Ville shortly before midnight. The next morning, 25 August, the bulk of the 2nd Armored Division and US 4th Infantry Division entered the city. Dietrich von Choltitz, commander of the German garrison and the military governor of Paris, surrendered to the French at the Hôtel Meurice, the newly established French headquarters, while General Charles de Gaulle arrived to assume control of the city as head of the Provisional Government of the French Republic.

Seeing things in black and white gives off this imaginative, unreal feeling. But putting things into color really begins to show how things have changed. It begins to make you realize that all of this really was real. Something that we cant even imagine today. Just how fast technology advanced, how bloody this war was, and how lucky we are today.

This type of work is really important. I'm french, and I've been living in France my whole life. To me, these videos really show what happened at that time, so that we, today, can get a better understanding of how things were. It wasn't that long ago, and seeing this in my streets really gives me goosebumps, even though we'll probably never understand what people at that time went through. We have to remember, so that one day we'll be able to shape a better future

@@colin.k6263 in 1940, the French army was not superior to the german army, it's just propaganda. in fact apart from the french navy (but which was mainly in the Mediterranean according to the France-UK agreements) and b1bis tanks (more powerful but who also had a lot of flaw), the whole French army was lower: fewer soldiers, less modern equipment, less training and experience. the French army was poorly prepared and no one disputes it, but which democratic country was in 1940? After the British fled to Dunkirk, the French army and the rest of the Belgian army (and one brave scottish division) were significantly inferior in number to the German army and the French army also had to defend the borders of the Alps against the Italians. As the English historian gervase phillips says: The French did not lack courage in 1940; they lacked space. If you want to know why the French lost in 40 days, ask yourself how long the british army would have resisted in 1940 if there had not been the channel but juste a river to protect them ? how long the Soviets would have resisted if their country was the size of France in 1941 instead of retreating over several thousand kilometers ? how long would the us army of 1941 have resisted on a territory smaller than Texas if the Japanese army had attacked from Mexico instead of being on the other side of the Pacific ocean? ps: you cannot compare French soldiers of 1940 who know nothing about the horrors which will happen to German soldiers in 1945 who committed (or seen) these war crimes and who know that the soviets will do the same to them as soon as they surrender.

@@chenboiprod8922 Most of the members of the French resistance were in fact Spanish, in addition to the 65,000 Spanish soldiers integrated into the French army. A little respect for those you betrayed with the false promise that you were going to help liberate Spain from the Franco dictatorship. There are Spanish heroes of the French resistance forgotten by your patriotic propaganda like Francisco Ponzán Vidal who saved more than 3000 people helping them to escape from the Nazis. Those you despise continued to fight against the fascists in the Spanish mountains, the so-called "maquis", without any support from the "allies" who had promised to help them, until they were defeated by Franco in 1963. Our "allies" supported Franco and not those who helped them in the war against the Nazis and the Spanish in return suffered 40 years of dictatorship. I know Spaniards who fought against the Nazis in the French army who had to seek refuge in Venezuela, Mexico or Argentina because De Gaulle refused to help those who fought for France. He told them to return to their country and since they couldn't because Franco denied them Spanish nationality, they had to emigrate to America. Many of them will never forgive the French for being so ungrateful to those who gave their blood for France. The descendants of the 5,000 spaniards who died in Mauthausen, all those who died in combat, those who emigrated to South America because France denied them refuge, or all the victims of a dictatorship that lasted 40 years thanks to the betrayal of our "allies", would gladly punch you in the face if they read your comment.

At the time of the liberation of Paris there were 16,000 German soldiers in the city, most of them not combatants but office workers. At the start of the insurrection, Paris was 200 km behind the front, so there was no prepositioned fighting force but passages of German forces going towards the front. Hitler wanted to destroy Paris and its monuments and that the Germans fight to the last as he requested for each city, but the German governor (Marshal von Cholitz) aware that the Nazis had lost the war refused to apply the orders. the French resistance fighters were about 20,000 with only light weapons (no anti-tank weapons), there were 1200 killed on the French side and 3000 on the German side.
