Japanese history is fascinating. Also, this is another example of why it's a bad idea to celebrate too early on a battlefield. Win the war, then celebrate. Great video.

Well keep in mind that's how the Oda interpreted the Imagawa army's behavior after the battle, we generally believe they exaggerated heavily. The Imagawa still had numerous challenges ahead of them, many of which should have been more significant than the ramshackle Oda clan. Yoshimoto was a big stickler for showmanship, he was known to imitate Imperial court nobles and tbf Yoshimoto brought many positive changes to the Imagawa clan and the region as a whole. He believed maintaining traditions even for minor victories was paramount to maintain high moral and the prestige of their cause. Anyhow whether their celebrating and resting for the next big fight was really to blame for their downfall or not they were definitely caught off guard by the Oda. The big takeaway for me is never underestimate your enemy no matter how insignificant they may appear on paper.

@Naraku-no-Hana-WE3 жыл бұрын
I love the presentation and there are a lot of good and interesting details. However, I do feel you're missing some critical details about some of the most important moments of Oda Nobunaga's career. First, while the young Fool of Owari was destined to succeed his father the Tiger of Owari Nobuhide, he was not expected to be the head of the Oda clan or to control Owari province. Nobunaga's family were a branch family of the Oda clan. His uncle was head of the Oda, and they in turn were vassals to the Shiba clan of Owari. Thus it isn't so unreasonable for a young Kipposhi to be seen running with peasants and shirking responsibility as he never envisioned he'd become daimyo. Second, the exact size of Imagawa Yoshimoto's army is unknown. Most historians generally agree it was between 25-35k men. However, the Imagawa purposefully released reports ahead of them that they commanded a force of 85k. For reference most major battles in Europe around this time featured 10-20k men in total between two countries. You can begin to fathom what Nobunaga's officers were going through seeing him so casually disregard reports of the Imagawa's strength and marching into an open field conflict. At Okehazama battle had already commenced on several fronts prior to Nobunaga's arrival and move out on the Imagawa camp. With clashes on the front lines against a series of forts you can understand how a force of a few thousand Oda troops might go unnoticed. The resulting surprise attack on Imagawa's HQ caused panic and chaos. Many of the Imagawa samurai having been drinking or resting were convinced the Oda force had somehow crushed the Imagawa vanguard and that they had already lost the field of battle (which of course was not true, numerous Imagawa forces still roamed the field out of sight). The story of Yoshimoto dodging the spear thrust only to be beheaded from behind is most likely a fabrication, we have other reports that he fought valiantly to the end trying to regroup his forces. Nobunaga's retreat from the Asai/Asakura surprise attack was nearly disastrous for the Oda clan. Nobunaga was shot in the retreat by Rokakku clan ambushers, and Hideyoshi was also in grave danger during the rear guard against Asakura. To begin with Nobunaga was convinced his brother-in-law Asai Nagamasa would never betray him. Nagamasa was known as a particularly honorable man, and lady Oichi is recorded as being an exceptionally valued woman. However, when the Asai formed their alliance with the Oda one of the conditions was that the Oda would inform the Asai if they ever planned to go to war with their longtime allies the Asakura. Nobunaga assumed it was a mere formality that could be ignored, but Nagamasa was a stickler for propriety. Thus he saw Nobunaga as disregarding their alliance and had no choice but to come to Asakura's aid. Takeda Shingen was indeed confused by Tokugawa Ieyasu's moves following the decisive battle of Mikatagahara. Thus he missed the opportunity to finish off Ieyasu who left his castle gates open (in the desperate hope that more of his men would return alive from Mikatagahara; they did not). However, the Takeda did not retreat from their invasion due to an abundance of caution. The Tokugawa night raids on the Takeda siege lines dealt punitive damage to the Takeda, who were forced back into wet ditches and slaughtered in mass. It is unclear why the Takeda side suffered so heavily during these fights in spite of their vast advantages over the Tokugawa, but it is commonly attributed to a breakdown in communication on the Takeda side. The breakdown may even have been caused by the death (or perhaps merely collapse from an old war wound) of Takeda Shingen himself, possibly to a Tokugawa marksmen during the night though that explanation is usually viewed with skepticism by historians. The Tokugawa side couldn't explain it any better than we can as they could not see what happened on the Takeda side, but the result of the night raids was a disastrous defeat of the Takeda that forced them to withdraw back to Kai. Still, a lot of great info you provided here, I just felt it needed a few clarifications. Keep up the good content.

@@treeless_leaf , that's not a novel though That's a sentence used in Xianxia novels(the genre refers to stories in which people cultivate powers to become immortal, gaining advanced abilities like flying, walking on water and throwing power orbs)

I actually like that I fairly know some of these people just because I played Samurai Warriors way back then, so i get some familiarity on how the battles started, etc.

Hoping to see other Sengoku period battles covered like those during Takeda Shingen's campaigns (conquest of Shinano, 4th Kawanakajima, Mimasetoge, Mikatagahara) or during Shimazu clan's conquest of Kyushu like Okitanawate in 1584.

0:52 Finding this video 2+ years later and right after the Assassin's Creed: Shadows "drama" is hilarious. It's like Yasuke was always generally considered a Samurai and it's only becoming a problem now, because of American Politics. It's not like this is the first game to feature Yasuke either. (Samurai Warriors 5.)
@ryufight79873 ай бұрын
😅 ironically, these same issues probably were present at that time, too, some accepted him as samurai, and others didn't 😅 A while back, i stumbled on an article by a japanese historian where he suggested the idea of that being one of the main reasons Odo Nobunaga kept Yazuka around 😀 . To cause chaos under his rivals and enemies ,there is always a reason why a Japanese ruler in those times kept certain people as vassals closely Odo Nobunaga was known to be a cruel and strange ruler at times he humiliated the people around him , had strange sexual demands from his vassals, and subordinates .

Wasn't the Three Kingdoms totally dumbed down and ventured into the RPG "special abilities"/arcade-y realm? I remember the shock when first comming to R2TW, from all the previous TW series (starting with the original Shogun: Total War in 2000), though luckily it had one great mod (DEI), who redeemed it for it. From what I saw on some YT materials, it seems like CA progressed into the "arcadization" of the series into the TW:Warhammer kind, no?
@sirguilhaume19643 жыл бұрын
@@Haamre pretty much, from example archers don't have a range bonus from terrain, and in warhammer they streamline a lot of stuff, gunners don't have a reloading animation and range is king in that game, infantry is not that important like in the older games

This is all super interesting, but with my very limited familiarity with the names of people and places mentioned, I found this video virtually incomprehensible. It's a quick succession of nouns that I can't place, and by the time I remember if that particular name is new to me or was already used earlier in the video, I've lost track of what's going on. This type of presentation format might be a great revision guide for someone who knows what's going on, but for a newb like me its hard to get anything out of it. Maybe slowing down a little or showing some iconography on screen to make it easier to remember which name refers to what would help? A family tree (with in laws) would also make it a bit clearer. Or maybe it's just me being a visual learner or simply an idiot?
@JonatasAdoM3 жыл бұрын
Oh I feel for you. That's how I too used to feel about Japanese history before playing Shogun 2. The names sound like a mess at first and the clan colors like a bunch of made up geometric shapes. There is a BBC documentary about Tokugawa Ieyasu that may help somewhat getting you more accostumed with the setting. Other than that only getting help from someone that knowshow to explain it, like the clans and names and the basic feuds of clan x agaisnt clan y. This video would be like a language class that already expects you to know the basics of what is being talked about.

I'm glad it's not just me! I have my core historical interest (Classical era Mediterranean) that I am very familiar with. I've been pushing forwards and backwards in time as well as widening in space (I'm now getting into ancient Mesopotamia and dark Ages Byzantium). This has enough overlap with what I already know that it makes some sense. But medieval Japan is so different that I have no landmarks to grab onto. I like your analogy, will use that in the future!
