When Keitel was signing capitulation he was shocked to see French, so much so, that he said:" oh, these guys also won?" During this you called me idiot and ignorant, (while not stating credentials, so wiki basics shall be ok) i offered you to provide information with some sources which would prove me wrong, instead you gave me excuses that only are not making any difference as i am not comparing whole of French campaign to whole of Soviet campaign, i was comparing and talking about entire French campaign and just an episode of one of the most fierce, long, massive and pivotal battles of entire war battle of Stalingrad. Some extra facts I feel should've been in the video. First, Army Group B had from July to November 150,000 casulties but only got 100,000 replacements. Meanwhile Army Group Centre had 146,000 casulties, while getting 192,000 replacements. In fact all Army Groups did the get enough men to replace losses, except Army Group B. Across the entire Eastern Front there was more replacements than there was losses, but not by much. Meaning that Army Group B and all other Army Groups could've replaced every lost man, but instead Army Group B got shafted. A net loss of 50,000 men would've been quite significant. Secondly, in mid August, Army Groups A and B had 11 division taken away, 6 Infantry divisions, 1 Jäger division, 2 Motorized division and 2 Panzer divisions, only to be replaced with 3 Italian divisions and 4 Romanian divisions with 8 more divisions due in early September. Having a net loss of 50,000 men and losing 11 divisions only to be replaced with inadequate and fewer divisions would have been a major blow to Army Groups A and B fighting capabilities. Bonus fact. It wasnt Göring that convinced Hitler that the 6th Army could be supplied by air. Because at the time he was chairing a petroleum conference in Karinhall. Hitler as the Chief of Staff of the Luftwaffe, General Hans Jeschonnek, if it was possible and Jeschonnek said yes, as long as the Luftwaffe retined control of foward airfields. But during a telephone conversation with General von Richthofen, Jeschonnek was convinced it was impossible and tried to dissuade Hitler only to be brushed aside. Göring arrived 22 of November and felt compelled to say it was possible, even though he had had not oppertunity to calculate the tonnages, because he didnt wasnt to go against what his generals decision and more importantly Hitlers decision. Hitler after Jeschonnek innitial assesment refused to change his mind and we all know the rest.

Aragorn195 Yes. The video would have been much stronger to include that broader context. Other points that could have been made is Stalingrad wasn’t the primary object of Fall Blau but was only a secondary objective. Related to this, AFAIK, Stalingrad was the first time the Wehrmacht had been engaged in intense urban warfare in place of the “war of movement”. On the air lift, the Luftwaffe had successfully supplied the Demyansk Pocket in February and May earlier in 1942 over a greater distance but supplying fewer troops. The major difference in the Stalingrad pocket was the effectiveness of the Red Army Airforce. The possibility of a breakout was, according to Glantz and others, nil. The 6th Army had little mobility as they had shipped out most of their horses in anticipation of the coming winter. The lack of supplies and the need to conduct an offensive while simultaneously defending their flanks and rear meant a breakout was impractical. Finally, was Operation Uranus the first really successful application of “Deep Battle”/“Deep Operation” and a crucial lesson in how the Red Army could beat the Wehrmacht on the battlefield?

Assumptions were made on the total weights for the airlifting of supplies and foods...but for the food supplies an error was made in terms of not realizing that it was less dense and took up more spacing on the relief planes. In other words for food it wasn't a question of weight but how much of this less dense supply could be physically fit into the cargo planes resulting in less food that could be channeled.

Your graphics never looked as good as they do in this vid. It has such an immersive feel that the vid drew me in, despite me not being particularly interested in Stalingrad (as it has been covered to death before). Great job! I've read a book by Saul David before on military disasters and it pointed out that the Stalingrad offensive was supposed to be just a sideshow for their attack as their main objective are the Baku oilfields as Germany was facing shortages of it. So the attack was more economical rather than tactical in nature. That Hitler forced his generals to change their plans to concentrate on Stalingrad speaks more as to how he's starting to lose touch with reality by not concentrating on strategic targets that served him well on their earlier victories. Propaganda also had a lot to do with the attack, as levelling the city of your rival will make a great propaganda piece. In the end, it proved to be Hitler's undoing.
@KingsandGenerals6 жыл бұрын
Thank you, my friend! Indeed, the fact that 2-3 armies were kept on Don is a proof that the attack on Stalingrad was not a definite goal. Taking Baku and the Caucasus was important not only due to the oil, but because the Soviets were receiving most of the Lend-Lease via Iran, so cutting off this lifeline was important for Germany.
@nikolalesov83596 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree with Saul David. The Germans made mistakes during this operation, but that was not the concentration of force against Stalingrad instead of against Baku. There were not so many troops of the Red Army there as in Stalingrad. So if the Germans were to push towards the mountains with their main forces, the mass of the Red Army in Stalingrad would of swipe the smaller force in front of them, and the main German forces would of ended in the biggest encirclement in the history - Black Sea and Kaspian Sea at their sides, the defenders in the mountains in front of them, and the mass of the rest of the Red Army at their back. The result would of been even worse than the clear defeat at Stalingrad! :)

Hermann Goering, chief of the Luftwaffe, said at Nuremberg trials when asked about Germany not using chemical weapons, that they didn't use them, because their army logistics heavily relied on horses and any retaliation from Allied forces would drastically reduce their capabilities. Fascinating video, thank you for uploading. My grandfather was captured with the 6th army at Stalingrad, he was in the 44th infantry division. Many deaths occured in his POW camp of malnutrition. He ultimately lost around 80 pounds moving around different Russian labour camps. Fortunately he became one of the few survivors to finally return to Germany in the mid 1950s where he lived a long peaceful life His younger brother made it to the end of the war as a loader for the Jagdtiger in the 512th Heavy tank destroyer battalion and surrendered to the American 9th infantry division in May 1945.

I've watched the four videos of your "Modern Warfare" playlist. Compared to other content creators; for example, "Time Commanders Series" (which I enjoy, and find informative and entertaining) your presentations' graphics and macro analysis makes the conflict easier to follow. However, "Time Commanders Series" are going off very old, but which seems to be credible sources of the conflicts. The show presents the best reenactments through the use of gaming modes. I like your presentation because you can obviously provide the dates and significant actors, divisions, and battalions used; which is quite impressive. Very well done. I study WW2 as a hobby after watching Kursk and Stalingrad I'm convinced you know your ww2 history of the Soviet Union/ Nazi German front. As a brand new fan and someone that loves this content, would you consider creating a "Battle of Moscow", short documentary. Many NAZI Generals at the Nuremberg trials believed the whole (NAZI German) eastern front was doomed after the Soviet Union counter-strike on Dec. 5, 1941 during the "Battle of Moscow". I think that would be well worth your effort and would put that epic battle in perspective for a lot people that don't understand it that well. The "Battle of Moscow" was in my, and others' opinions the battle that decided the war; and the Soviet victory over "Stalingrad was the nail in the coffin, Thanks for your effort. I also subscribed.

The first fight in Stalingrad took place on August 23, 1942 between the 14th tank corps of General Gustav Anton von Wietersheim and the 1077th anti-air regiment, in which there were young female volunteers, whose average age was 18 years old. The 1077th anti-air regiment was located in the rear, in the north-west of Stalingrad and defended the factory part of Stalingrad. No one expected the Germans to appear quickly. 600 factory workers and 2 tanks came to the support of the girls. Together, they held their positions for 2 days and did not allow the Germans to enter the city on the march. Girls were taught to shoot at enemy aircrafts, and not at tanks, but among them was one officer, a man. His name was Captain Luca Dahovnik. He showed the girls how to aim at ground targets. During the fight there were 83 German tanks wrecked (32 destroyed). 15 vehicles, 2 fuel tanks were destroyed and 14 aircraft were shot down. 3 battalions of infantry were killed. Factory workers were all killed. Very few girls survived. Those who were taken after wounds to the hospital, after the first day of the fight. After the war, at the place where these girls took their last fight, the townspeople installed 85-mm anti-aircraft gun, and in Stalingrad one of the streets got its name as “anti-aircraft gunners street”.
