Yes but it's a Ukrainian diversionary attack. If they hold Sudzha, they compromise Russia's presence further south, as well as block Russian gas deliveries to Europe. The Ukrainians took Sudzha and are digging in because they also want to force the Kremlin to redirect resources away from other parts of Ukraine to liberate the territory. All told I do not believe the Ukrainians will stay, most likely they want to hold the region for months to tie up Russian logistics and manpower; Putin cannot continue attacking unless he first liberates the oblast. Which raises the next question - what is Ukraine's next move? they won't be parking 3-4,000 soldiers in Russia for nothing.

But in any case, they've already lost once Barbarossa failed so it was hopeless anyways. Best thing they could've done was to go on the defensive, preserve as much manpower/equipment/resource as possible and make the Soviets pay dearly for each attack. They'd still lose in the end regardless, though.

Something should be noted that the majority of the crew of those tank losses survive so manpower losses wasn't that severe. More importantly, Soviet held the battlefield afterward so they could recover tanks that could be repair while German tanks left there was total losses. This had seldomly happened before. Also, the number of losses shot up when Soviet overran the repair yards in the Offensives afterward.

Yep! It was about 600.000 Reichsmark. In comparison to a Panzer III, it was more than 5 times expensive. And nearly 7 times more, than a Stug III. But in this case, it isn't a question of the money. They enemies had such a favor in raw materials, that make it senseless, to fight them with a shear mass. The idea of the tiger was to fight the enemy first. And if they close enough to repeat, shock them with your heavy armor. This works very well, with enough support by Panzer IV- H and/ or Stug III- G. Btw. Did you know, how many enemy tanks were killed by the assault guns? 30.000... Only by the assault guns!

It is exactly what the soviet doctrine want their enemy to do, build a very awesome machine that can stand its ground while watch the frontline being breached and the rear rampaged by deep battle operations. The soviets dont care how much is lost in the initial breakthrough, the enemy is gonna lose way more if they got the momentum started anyways, and tigers are jst the perfect tool to not stop that momentum.

The Eastern Front was by far the most brutal/violent/large scale battles of the entire War. There are still thousands of Soviet soldiers out on the battlefield, where they fell still holding their rifles and being dug up and given proper burial to this day. That shows how bad it really was.

The best part about this video is it really underlines the bravery of both sides; the perseverance of the Russians to continue to fight whilst taking heavy losses. The bravery and experience of the Wehrmacht; to inflict VERY heavy casualties with a much smaller force, continuing to hold and fight on despite being heavily outnumbered. All the time each countries Tanks regiments were not far away from each other. Long battles are very confusing, same anti-tank gun can be in soviet hands, then fall into germans and back. What gived Germand advantage was new Tiger tanks. Before russians hadn't encoutered them. These tanks had longer range than previous ones. That means they can shoot first. Cause soviets couldn't see german tanks, but predict from their shots were they were. All their shots back were far away from reaching tigers. In the battle of air North side was always contested, that means Germans didn't had air supiority, in the South After couples of days Germans had air supiority, thats were most of russian tank losses come. Just cause russians had 2 mln. troops doesn't mean they were all active on front. Germans quickly used all their remaining reinforcements in first days. During offensive stages they probably had more troops in engangement front than russians ones. The whole engagement probably took more than 2 months. Soviet counter-offense went north of kursk , it would had been easier to push germans in south, because of terrain. But pushing south doesn't give soviets strategic front advantages. While pushing north(which soviets did), gived them 2 options for next offense going south for romania oil or middle to cut german front in two pieces.

Concensus among most historians is that Germany lost in December 1941. They had an early advantage due to preparedness (gearing up 4 war be4 the others). Germany lacked resources and manpower. The real showstopper was oil. A german victory at Citadel wouldn't have made much of a difference; except prolonging the war.

the failure to give replacements to army group B in operation fall blau and stripping 9 divisions from the southern front when it was the main focus in 1942 was the biggest mistake, Stalingrad should have been an easy capture but 6th army received nowhere near enough replacements when they were available and as such ran a deficit of 50,000 men this would have won the battle and then the 6th army and 4th panzer army would be able to swing south and complete the operation for the caucasus oilfields. This would have changed the war as these two extra armies would have enabled the Germans to destroy the entire southern wing of the red army

@@KingsandGenerals The biggest tanks battle by a total number of tanks in the world history was near Brody(Ukraine) in 1941, thousands tanks more near Brody comparing to Kursk, so the Kursk battle in 1943 is the second biggest battle by number of tanks. Soviet/Russia tried to wipe out from history the Brody battle, it was an epic soviet fail, mostly all heavy loses related to the exceptionally bad general Zhukov(after Brody soldiers gave him nickname Butcher) command skills and attitude towards subordinates, and, of curse, lack of dozed thousands experienced Red Army officers been exterminated by Stalin before WWII. 2500+ tanks were lost by USSR and/or captured by Germany near Brody and about 8000 tanks total loses in Ukraine in consequent battles in 1941, all in a few months. And my relatives took part in WWII in Ukraine in 1941.

The main reasons were: 1) It was the beginning of the war for the Red Army and the tank crews did not have any experience. Almost all tank drivers had just a small experience (2-5 hours of driving). At the same time, nazis had a huge experience which they got during the Blitzkrieg. 2) Most of the Soviet tanks were not modern and even modern ones like (KV-2 and T-34) could be easily hit by 8,8 cm FlaK 18/36/37. That was the main reason by the way. 3) Crews did not have enough armor-piercing shells because of the chaos in the Red Army which nazis made in the first months of the invasion. But sure you can continue bullshiting. Nobody really cares about your opinion lol

There is a pretty big issue when reporting tank “loses” on the German side that I wish history content creators would mention, though tragically very few ever do. The Germans never reported on how many tanks they lost at the end of battles like other armies. What they did report was how many operational tanks they had at the end of each day. That may not seem like a big deal but there are a lot of variables that can skew those “tank loses” people love to site. If the allies knocked out 50 tanks in a battle, but by the end of the day the Germans were able to repair 20 of those tanks to operational status by the end of the day AND possibly be resupplied 10 additional tanks as well then they would only report having 20 less tanks at the end of that day, even though 50 were knocked out in battle and historians announce only 20 tanks were lost. When historians fail to mention this and how the numbers being presented are calculated it leaves their audience with a false sense of damage inflicted by the allies against the Germans. I love battlefield videos like these and this is really well done, but I personally feel that audiences should be more aware of the system for figuring out loses and hope more people are made aware of the issues in reporting them. When I first heard about the German way of “reporting loses” I was fascinated. I encourage anyone actually reading this far into my comment to check out battle breakdowns by “TIK” who’s videos are crammed full of information and who is one of the very few I found that explain how others come up with German tank “loses” for battles.

At the end of the battle, the Soviets reach the German rail heads. Apart from the rolling stock, they capture hundreds of Knocked out German tanks. These were waiting to be transported back to Germany. These are not recorded as losses by the German army. Similar are the Ukrainians [hiwi's] attached at Corp level in the German army, these helpers are said to have run off during the battle, when in fact they were drafted into the combat units to replace losses. Again, the Division ration strength does not change, so the losses to grenadiers and infantry looks lighter than it actually was. There were thousands of Hiwi's attached to the German Corps at Kursk.

The Soviets won these battles at one of the heaviest costs of any nation in history, it's no wonder Russia has population issues to this very day, they were often phyrric victories in some ways. It's interesting and probably quite meaningful to look at ww2 in the context of the German Blitz as a seasonal thing. Every summer they made massive gains. Poland in 1939, France and low countries in 1940. Barbarossa in 1941. Ukraine/Caucasus in 1942. The tide was turning overall, but stopping the Blitz in the summer would still be something completely new. 1943 was Kursk, but finally at a massive soviet cost, the German Blitz was stopped, and the rest of the war was little more than formalities.

Good point, although you could also add the Balkans campaign of 1941 where the Third Reich (following Mussolini’s Italian failures) invaded and occupied Yugoslavia, Albania, and Greece for the Axis Powers, with the first great paratrooper landing in history on Crete. It’s incredible to think this happened the same year as the push for Leningrad and Moscow in Operation Barbarossa, as well as the British led Operation Crusader in the North Africa campaign to cross the Axis powers’ line of control along the Egyptian border to relieve the siege of Tobruk in Libya.

Hitler probably thought he could do the same thing and that Russia would just tear itself apart again under the might of the Nazi's. They should've focused on making their intelligence better, German Intelligence was notoriously awful that when the Americans allowed the Nazi spies in Eastern Europe to remain but work for them, they got nothing useful out of it. That way they could've tried to promote internal conflicts. Of course, Stalin had already been busy nipping at the bud any possible threat to his rule through shit like Holodomor, executions or forced deportations, so this would've been very difficult.

They got bogged down in Leningrad and Stalingrad which managed to withstand offensive after offensive, soaking up resources the Nazis really needed. They ultimately lost it all to Alexander the Great, a foreigner who imposed his culture on his new kingdom,like how the USSR occupied eastern Germany and Berlin.

Fascinating video! Thank you for uploading! Most of my relatives at the time was in combat in the East for the Wehrmacht. My Grandfather was in the 6th army 44th infantry division and saw action in Poland, France and Kharkov. He was later captured along with thousands of men at Stalingrad. Ultimately he lost 80 pounds of body weight moving around different Russian labour camps before finally returning home to Germany in the mid 1950s. His younger brother started off the war in the East as part of the 439th Regiment of the 134th Division and was at the battle of Moscow then later he was one of 9 survivors out of 1,000 men in his regiment to die in the battle of Kursk where he was injured. He survived the end of the war as part of the 512th heavy tank destroyer battalion as a loader for the Jagdtiger when he surrendered to the Americans in May 1945.

Its said that the lost at Stalingrad made that the Germans lost their last opportunity to take the Caucasus, the only decent source of oil in Europe. Without this (and the lost at North Africa) the army must keep minimal motorized units, and the Lufftwaffe was nearly abandoned since it consumed so much, and then everything goes on a downfall... Germany's oil factories were also being targeted, so even fewer resources for them. On the other side the allies had nearly infinite amount of oil, so they could build and maneuver with their tanks, and had trucks to bring supplies and everything. Winning at Kursk would only delay the inevitable, since the Soviets could just fall back and continuer mass producing and bombarding his cities, but at Stalingrad they still had a chance to win the war.

The battles of Kursk and Stalingrad together had amounted to some of the bloodiest battles of the entire war, it no wonder the Soviet Forces were so adamant and brutal in their destruction of the Weirmacht, and the SS during their push to Berlin. The Soviet's deeply drank from a cup filled with it's nation blood, after its reclamation of it's Southern borders, and the final actions in the war. I have much respect for the Soviet Army and its Commander's for all they endured in some of the most brutal warfare that ever took place in all of the European Theatre of Operations.

At this point war was already lost. Germany did not had enough oil to fight modern war at full strength.

Well Hitler knew he needs to take Caucasus for oil and to cut USSR from oil, they already cut them of from grain as Ukraine was huge grain producer. And that would have turned tides. But German generals did not listen to Hitler and focused cities like Moscow and Stalingrad too much. Germany only had limited oil resources for this war, with no way to import any, besides small deposits in Europe, but that was far from enough. And Stalin knew this well, as USSR were selling A LOT of oil prior to war.
