I recently purchased a Mazda CX-30. It wasn't even on my list of potential or preferred purchases at the beginning of my research (beginning in late-summer 2022). I leaned toward Toyota, Honda, Subaru and Ford. However, all of my research pointed to Mazda being the best value choice for the compact and subcompact SUV/crossover segment. For Toyota, I was considering the C-HR, Corolla Cross and RAV4. For Honda, I considered the HRV and the CRV. For Subaru, I considered the Crosstrek and Forester. For Ford, I considered the Bronco Sport and the Maverick. I also considered the Hyundai Santa Cruz (it just looks cool) until I realized just how cheaply it was made under the hood and beneath the vehicle. What won me over for Mazda? Quality. The moment you sit in one, you're surprised. The materials are quality. The cabin is extremely quiet. The engine has more horsepower/torque and doesn't use a CVT transmission (which -- in the best of cases -- will eventually be problematic). Mazda (including the CX-30, CX-5 and CX-50) is superior in quality to the point that it doesn't feel that it belongs in the same class with its competitors. Rather, Mazda feels like it should be considered in entry luxury crossover/SUV segments. Even the non-touchscreen turned out to be a positive rather than a negative for me. The Mazda infotainment system is very similar to the BMW's system -- but Mazda just does it better. I just feel that you're getting the best bang for the buck with Mazda now.

@@zaend2195 I would argue that the Mazda CX-5 is a better vehicle than the Honda ZR-V -- particularly given the difference in cost in SAR. I live in the U.S. and the Mazda CX-5 is significantly better than the Honda HR-V (it has a different name in North America). In fact, the HR-V is actually less costly than the CX-5 in North America. The CX-5 offers a more premium interior and better standard options than the ZR-V. Plus, the CX-5 comes with more HP/torque, standard AWD on high grade and up and a better driving experience (in terms of comfort).

@@noobwow2009 I almost went for a used CX-5 turbo a while back. It had a runroof (not pano though, obviously), and had this leather stitching, soft interior. It was incredible! But I got nervous because it was past the comprehensive warranty and not that much left on the powertrain. I got nervous about the turbo. But the ultimate spoiler was the rear seats being too cramped, plus the trunk is so weird narrow. They failed to recuperate some of the lost fhe wheel wells. Instead of hugging around it, they just plunked down these walls and a hole bunch of hollow space behind it is lost. This doesn't work for families. So disappointing. And then Mazda's newer options are so expensive. I'm afraid that Mazda has nothing for families that's reasonable, I'm afraid. Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, VW, Toyota, is leaving Mazda in the dust. Perhaps the Japs' aging population is making them forget about families or something...
@frankzappa5162 Жыл бұрын
I narrowed my search down to the CX-5 Turbo, CX-50 Turbo, Rav4 2.5L 8-speed and CR-V Sport Touring; all of which are fantastic vehicles. I am going with the CX-5 turbo because of the superior interior, acceleration, ventilated leather seats, handling, seating position, quietness and overall ride. The CX-50 seems like a squished CX-5 and the quality is just not the same. Just open and shut the doors of both and you’ll notice the difference. The drink holders of the CX-50 were way up front against the dash, whereas a tall-boy beer or a 60oz coffee may not fit. There is very limited availability of the non-Meridian trim. The Meridian seemed styled after a Subaru. Rav-5 is good, but I cannot find a 2.5L 8 speed AWD XLE Prem within 100 miles without paying into 40’s, albeit FWD models are available. It also has rubber seats without ventilation. The Honda CRV is very nice with a great cabin [my current ride is an Accord 2.0T 10-speed]. I tried to like it, but it seemed like a mini van on a compact platform. The nose is way forward of the front wheel, and I would have to buy an aftermarket spare tire kit [$400+] to throw in the back for road trips. Plus, it would cost $3,500 more OTD than a CX-5 Turbo. The two things to the CX-5’s disadvantage were cubic feet and MPG. There is plenty of room for a few suitcases, guitar amps and mulch in the back. Maybe not the best for growing families. Because of the ‘premium’ price and dealer convenience fees on the price of the Honda CR-V [37 hwy], the payback on gas saving was at 82,415.5 miles @ $4.00 a gallon. Likewise, compared to the 2WD Rav4 [34 hwy], it costs $2.14 an hour more to drive the CX-5 at 70 mph. The cost difference for an 8-hour road trip would be $17.08. To me [and my gentleman’s size derriere], it’s worth the price for the comfort.

@Cletus_the_Elder Жыл бұрын
You did the comparison perfectly with the side-by-side visuals and the point-by-point comparison. People shopping in this segment will likely narrow it down to these two. I've driven both and your observations are spot-on. This may be the definitive shopping reference for people looking at these vehicles. The quality is there for both, with the Mazda still being assembled in Japan. The trunk space is a significant factor. I think singles and couples without kids will make the adjustment either way, but a growing family needs the space on trips, short and long. This current redesign of the CR-V is a significant improvement in all categories. It seems like a much more substantial car over previous years' models. I feel it makes better use of the space of it's footprint and outer dimensions The CX-5, which hasn't changed much over the past few years, has a snugger fit inside the cabin, even though it is not particularly compact on the outside. The naturally aspirated 1.5 in the CX-5 is surprisingly adequate and smooth. My only recommendation outside of the thorough coverage here is to make sure the service department where you buy your Mazda or Honda, where most buyers will likely service their Hondas and Mazdas that they eventually purchase, is a fully, dedicated operation, instead of some weird basement, underfunded operation of the dealership.

I had a 2021 rav4 (xse with all options) hybrid.. I had no issues. I had it for 13k miles and 1 year..sold it because I wanted something bigger and with more power- also had the opportunity to sell it for $5k over what I paid for it. I have an identical 2023 on order. Test drove a 2023 crv sport hybrid, it's okay..but I wasn't all that impressed and feel the rav4 hybrid is a much better choice. I'll be taking delivery of the rav4 when it comes in (I also purchased a 2023 santa fe limited that meets all my 'requirements', and I'll be keeping that as well).

I'd love to get my hands on a CR-V however with all of them being sold before they even reach the dealership lot. It's real hard to ahold of one. Meanwhile the CX-5 is the exact opposite. There's plenty to choose from including the Carbon Edition. So just on availability alone I'd pick the Mazda. Honda and Toyota really screwed themselves big time when it came to the chip issue. I see Honda and Toyota possibly losing some customers because of it. Meanwhile Subaru and Mazda have more vehicle's on their lots you can order the vehicle you want ( the other 2 you can't). Plus the price the Mazda CX -5 is actually cheaper than the Honda. I've seen CR-V's in that trim for as high as 45k no joke. If it were me I'd go with Mazda.

I bought a new Honda 2.0 hybrid CR-V with the touring package back in January, I bought the 2023 model and not the new redesign offered this year. I am glad I did because I don't like some of the changes Honda made to the CR-V this year in the looks department. Likewise, I test drove the Mazda cx5 before I bought the Honda, I chose the Honda over the Mazda because I didn't want a turbo. Turbos make engine ware out faster, I wanted a car that I could get at least 400k miles on and With gas prices so high now, I also wanted a car that I could get good gas millage with using regular gas. You don't really get 37 or 38 mph like they tell you will get, I get 35 on mine and so does my wife on hers, she has a 2021 model. But that's still a lot better than the Mazda. The Mazda I drove was a plain Jane version, and the inside of the one you showed looked much nicer than the one I drove. I did enjoy driving the Mazda, it had more power and a real transmission rather than a glorified lawnmower transmission like the Honda has. All in All though i am happy with my choice it's not overpowered by no means but it has just enough power. The only complaints I have about it is the transmission and the seats get hard after a long drive, which they fixed this year in the new model I will let you know though when I get 400k miles on it whether I buy another one

I’m really surprised about the differences between the US and European versions, it is like we’re talking totally different cars here !! The newest Mazda is actually the CX-60, with 327hp hybrid, and quite more expensive than the CRV, also hybrid. Mazda has NEVER delivered a turbo-engine in EU, while Honda did (the one you’re testing there, I guess) but now delivers only hybrid drivetrains in the 2023 CRV…. which we are waiting for until autumn, by the way. On topic then: 1) most importantly, in the EU the Mazda does not come with a 200-plus hp engine. Rather, you get a 2-litre athmospheric 165hp or a 2.5 with 195hp. With a handgear, the 165 does ok. But once teamed with the oldfashioned automatic 6-gear, all the puff is out of it. Slowwwww like a pedestrian. So you need the much more expensive 2.5 engine. But even then it is slower then the Honda CRV hybrid AWD, which has… no gears but a continuous drive 184hp, 315nm electric engine, coupled to a 2.0, 145 hp Athmospheric Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine. There wàs a 1.5 turbo, but due to environmental tax, that is discontinued in most countries. 2) In the EU, the Honda top level (executive) does have all the same options as the Mazda in this test: heated rear seats, HUD etc, minus only seat ventilation, which I am not sure the Mazda EU version has either. So, go figure… in a CX5 / CRV comparison by the EU auto press, the Mazda still imposes with the beautiful interior, but overall, the Honda wins… oh, and also pricewise 😊

Correct... Europe and Asia have a different version

Just to inform: Europe Mazda CX5 has seat ventilation when buying top trim Takumi version (full option trim). It also comes in brown nappa leather interior (soooo chic) - just ordered mine to collect it in april '04. It has all the features of CR-V hybrid only its - not hybrid :) - Takumi also comes with heated seats front and back. Elektric sunroof. Its a 2.0 liter with 164 PK mild hybrid (just an electric start engine, not really anything like hybrid, but they did have to do something with the name to make it seem like hybrid :)). I compared both - but in the end CR-V is about 10K € more expensive in our country (Belgium: we have 21% VAT so our government earns big when buying a new car :() - so I had to go for the CX5 Takumi. Price of the CX5 45K €. Price of the CR-v in Belgium: starting at 50K - same full option as the CX5 would be around 58K € thats just toooooooo much and Honda never gives any discounts - while with Mazda you can ask for discount (10-12 %)
@davidknoop10 ай бұрын
LB: thanks for the update ! Incidentally the pricing for the CRV in NL became too high as well due to the environmental tax. I do not think Honda will be able to sell them anymore with the current drivetrain. E.g. the RAV4 us now many thousands cheaper - just due to less emissions = less taxes. I also like the Mazda very much, by the way. I am not sure if it's better on the road. We had a CX 5 rental with handgear for a holiday once here in Poland. But as I said we prefer automatic and that was then much too sluggish. Now 4 years straight Honda CRV. If any criticism on the road behavior, it's that the steering at cruise speed is rather direct- more likely a sportscar than an SUV. Actually I wanted to go for the Kia Sorento... more space, more power, more options. But that had a delivery problem: almost one year to wait !! And we had a Dutch lease CRV here in Poland for the first months but obviously could not continue that. New CRV coming a bit late in the year and would be more expensive with the same drivetrain. So we went for (one of the last available) 2022 CRV models, top version hybrid. Overall a good buy here: € 45.000 vs 62.000 in NL 😮. What I miss: better multimedia, some more power, some less fuel consumption and a bit more souplesse in the chassis. Plus an App for remote car management. Especially cold start in winter 🥶. But all in all a lot of comfort. And as we are nearing 70, I do not feel that much need to keep up with the 200+ Autobahn racers. As I did when we had BMW, Volvo with 250+ hp. Still too young to die 😅 !

The thing I don’t get is 6 speeds is enough for a manual transmission, so why is everybody knocking 6 speeds in the Mazda , it’s actually really good , it holds gear perfect and feels very direct due to that 5mph lock up. I can’t think of a better transmission in that price range. Yeah there’s some with more gears but short of the ZF8 speed what’s better in a regular car ?

Excellent review.... However, how much will the hybrid battery cost to replace in the Honda if you keep it a long time ... say 15 years or more? All the money you saved over the years will be gone, and then some. Another issue, is that with a hybrid, you have to drive the car regularly... People have no idea how pitiful Hybrid resale will be with degrading battery and 2.5 x's greater part complexity compared to a gas powered vehicle out of warranty...not to mention 100 computers to allow a motor to work seamlessly with gas engine. Take this review. This aspect which is huge and a rudiment of any machine with much greater part complex for long term ownership isn't even discussed. Hybrids exist for only one reason. Profit for auto manufacturers because a vehicle with two powerplants versus one will always fail with higher probability. Physics, the general public flunks in school and why so many suckers buy hybrids.
