Retired Honda tech of 30 years. I own a 2019 Forester and 2023 CX5 premium plus. When I went to buy new in 2019, CRV non turbo was base model with little safety features. Honda had always been a great company that built quality cars, but putting a turbo on that tiny 1.5 was a no for me. I never expect to buy any Honda with that engine. Lots of problems….oil dilution from fuel ( which seems to be addressed ) , head gasket problems due to design, fuel injector failures, etc. CX5 is a premium, sporty feel and has a tried and true engine ( I choose non turbo ) and has an auto trans. Forester has incredible view, great safety features, very versatile. I love both.

With your auto experience, I'm looking at cx5 and deciding between turbo & non turbo engines. With proper maintenance do you think the turbo and its additional power are a good idea, or keep it simple with non turbo? I'm planning on keeping this suv long term. TIA

I bought the non turbo. Less things to go wrong and I don’t need the turbo extra zoom zoom. If you have to have the turbo, at least Mazda does not throw a turbo on a tiny engine.

I'll need to buy used, due to finances. I've seen A LOT of 2021 Forester lately. I'm wondering if there is some kind of issue with them.......or maybe leases were up at that time? Do you have any input on which years would be the best to buy for a used Forester???

@carmenmarcinkiewicz7149 hey, I have way less experience than the guy above, but I can say that 21 and 22 are quite a bit more solid than 19 and 20. They overhauled design in 2019 and a whole host of new problems popped up when they did. By 21 they had them largely sorted out, 22 being slightly more refined. I own a 20- I would avoid if possible. It's a fantastic car but a couple pricey maintenance calls in the past year or two for me that have been addressed in later models.

We tested all four vehicles in 2023 and settled down with Forester Limited. After 3500 miles, we are quite happy with Subaru. CX5 has very uncomfortable seats. RAV4 was too short for tall person. CRV is just too expensive and its CVT is actually noiser than Forester.

We do get quite bit of snow, but that’s not the main reason we chose Forester. It’s the comfort, visibility, and ability to fit 6’3” tall person that led us to Forester. CX5 did not get along with my back. After testing RAV4 in 2022, we ended up with purchasing a 2022 MDX, which is super comfortable. When we wanted to buy another SUV in 2023, we rented RAV4 for almost one week to give RAV4 another try. Our younger son couldn’t sit in the front seats with RAV4. Nowadays, most of compact SUVs with sunroof are just not suitable for tall drivers. We would have given CRV-hybrid a chance if it can come without sunroof. By the way, one third of our neighbors have Subaru. So, reliability with Subaru is not a problem. Forester is very intuitive. It’s Eyesight system and physical knobs are very easy to use.

My wife is currently looking to replace her 2021 CR-V, which was totaled after she was rear-ended at a stoplight. She has test driven the RAV-4, Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V gas and hybrid. She sat in the CX-50 and is going back to drive it. My feeling is she can't go wrong with any of them. She eliminated the RAV-4 right away ... she said it was ok, but uncomfortable and noisy compared to the others. She does like both the CR-V and Mazda. I might lean personally towards the CX-50, but it needs to be her choice. I think she is leaning towards the CR-V hybrid, primarily because of how much driving she does. She was impressed by the Mazda, and I think a hybrid version would make that decision easy.

I think the CX-5 has the best steering feel, the Subaru the best braking feel and best all wheel drive, the Honda the best interior, and the plug in or hybrid RAV-4 the best gas mileage. Subaru recommends spark plug replacement every 30 thousand miles, the Eyesight safety system has a thinner windshield that often cracks, and at 100 thousand miles they often need more parts replaced. For looks inside and out, I think the Mazda looks the best, and the speakers are quite good both base and Bose versions.

We love the Forester (2019 Ltd). Great seats, very airy, excellent handling and fast enough. The Eyesight system is probably second to none. If I want sporty driving I drive a GTI or WRX. This review is spot on. The RAV4 is probably the most reliable if you plan to drive the car 200,000 miles and want the least issues. But the interior feels plasticky and the seats are short and not all that comfortable. I test drove the Mazda CX-5 normally aspirated and Turbo, the Subaru Forester Limited and new Honda CR-V Hybrid all in one day. I went in thinking I would like the Mazda the most and I do see it as the best value here. Hard to beat the Carbon Edition for the features it has at the price of under $34,000 or the Turbo models if you want a quick, great looking, great build quality, fun to drive SUV for under $40,000. It's built like small tank with near luxury level interior, but the seats are not supportive and we found it cramped in the front seat, back seat and cargo area. I probably need more space than the Mazda offers as I have to carry cargo often. I was surprised that I liked the Honda CR-V Hybrid the best. Looks sporty, quiet, drives well, seems well built, good gas mileage with either powertrain, comfortable seats and lots of room and storage for passengers and cargo. Feels premium. It's a little expensive to get the features I want especially the Bose, I would have to get the top trim. I wish it had front ventilated seats. I actually prefer the standard size sunroof, but besides that, its a winner.

Yeah, Mazda doesn't currently have a hybrid powertrain in NA for its older vehicles not riding on its newest platform, like the CX-90 and 60, which are mild hybrid i-6 standard or PHEV 4 banger. The hybrid CX-50 is indeed coming soon as mentioned, possibly with a Toyota sourced hybrid drivetrain or some variation or combination of the 90's 4 cyl PHEV/i-6 mild setup. Unfortunately I don't see Mazda putting that hybrid tech into a CX-5, since it'll likely be discontinued before too long, which is a big bummer. It would also be great to see a Mazda 3 hybrid too, but who knows. Mazda is also discontinuing the MX-30 (its only EV) in NA after this year, though I think it will still be sold elsewhere.

Great review, the only thing I disagree on is your criticism of Foresters interior quality. I test drove all 4 and forester’s interior quality is definitely up there if not better than Honda. Yes the tech looks super dated, but from the moment you open the door there is soft leather wrapping almost the whole door and the entire dash, shifter area is all soft touch. I also find it has the least rattle because the Japanese fit and finish. For anyone looking at this, please go test drive them and everyone will have their personal preferences. Btw, Honda and Toyota’s interiors are horrendous in the lower trims, everything you touch is hard plastic, this is not the case for Subaru and Mazda.

The Subaru does have better materials on the doors and less hard touch plastic than the Honda (I should have added that) but build quality is different from materials. The clickiness of the buttons, panel fitment, the creakiness of the interior, the feel of the doors closing and the handles, etc. are what I base build quality off of. Like a mazda3 has more soft touch materials than a lot of actual luxury cars, but it doesn't have the same level of build quality of them. Similarly, the Mazda CX-5 has better build quality than the mazda3, but i'd say the materials are worse on the lower half of trims!

Toyota have a goal in mind and if you can't see pass that their vehicle isn't for you. Reliability, fuel efficiency, and options for everyone's needs is probably their number #1 priority. Quality obviously isn't their main concern probably trying to reduce weight as much as possible. If it's one of your main concern than there's the expense route which is Lexus. One thing for sure Toyota's will take care of you for a very very long time with low maintenance cost as long you keep up with the basic maintenance Iike oil change 4-6k etc.

No major accidents but minor should be okay. If you don't mind the long drive expand your search up to 400miles or however long you're willing to travel to get to that rav4 you solely want. *Damn. Huge effort. Best CUV buyers guide I've seen!* Couple notes for viewers doing research for a purchase: We have a '21 Forester Premium and absolutely love it. The big windows and light off-road capability really do set it apart. Also, with the lower trim's 17 inch wheels, it gets over 30mpg! In my area, they're running about $1k less than a similar RAV4. Downsides: 19:12 The Forester's passing power is its biggest weakness IMO. It really struggled to get around slow traffic when hauling the family this summer. (warm temps + high altitude) A heated steering wheel is not available on the lower trims in the US. You have to buy a Limited and add an expensive option package. Servicing the CVT is quite expensive ~$300 and should be done more frequently than the other brand's automatics. (Every 40-60k is the consensus if you want it to last.) The Wilderness really takes a hit to mpg and the markups are currently $3k or more. Not worth it for most people probably.

Too bad the durability is not talked about. The Honda and the Subaru use a CVT. I know from personal experience in my family that the CVT in the Subaru fails at about 80,000 to 100,000 miles with the solenoid failing. If not replaced for $1000 quickly, the transmission goes and costs $9000. Otherwise it lasts 150,000 before it fails in any case. From friends their Honda's CVT fails around 130,000 and costs $8000 to replace. I prefer the Mazda with its 6 speed automatic which can last 200,000. Same goes for the gas powered Toyota with its 8 speed. Even Consumer Reports says this over time as the Honda and Subaru transmissions turn red the older the cars get.

@@alibabaschultz352 They have a reputation built on their old Brats etc that were very light and had smaller displacement engines that didn't have the inherent issues the larger engines of today have or EPA regs that basically force them to use a CVT. Subaru owners have a tendency to stretch the truth or flat out lie about their reliability. I was looking at getting a Crosstrek a couple years ago and the maintenance records speak for themselves, every single one of them were turned into the dealership for trade in before the warranty ran out at roughly 45k miles and every single one of them needed all four brakes replaced and at least two wheel bearings. Oil consumption issues, some still blowing head gaskets, issues with the infotainment system, some complaints of electrical issues etc. They all have weird and very frustrating gremlins like the same headlight bulb blowing out for no reason, randomly shattered rear windows in the hatchbacks on Imprezas. They have a better AWD system than most others... and frankly... that's all they have to offer IMO.

I've been shopping this segment for a new vehicle for my wife. The Mazda's look and feel much more upscale than the others especially the Toyota and Subaru. I love the Subaru AWD system as it is the only actual AWD system available in this class unless you want to move up in price for a Q3 with the outstanding Audi quattro drive system. Unfortunately the CVT and 'face only a mother could love' looks of the Subaru's are a deal breaker for me. I know the newer Subaru CVT's have a pretty good track record and get good MPG but I just don't like driving CVT's and even a good CVT with meticulous maintenance is no where near as durable/reliable as a conventional trans. and if you are towing anything at all CVT's are questionable at best. We are strongly leaning towards a Mazda but will likely go with a CX-50 because in our opinion it's much nicer looking than the dated CX-5 and we prefer the wider cabin and wider, longer cargo space and better rear leg room of the CX-50. Before all you CX-5 fans jump on me, yes the CX-5 is slightly quieter and rides/handles slightly better we just prefer the look of the CX-50 and the extra 1500lbs of towing and the extra ground clearance of the CX-50. Also my wife is a big fan of the pano sunroof. As the saying goes happy wife happy life!! Hard to go wrong with any of these vehicles in terms of quality, utility and value.

The seats for the CRV are horrible on my back. Your knees sit high putting huge pressure on the lower spine. Subarus has the best seats. Mazdas and RAV4 are okay. Mazda probably a bit better than RAV4. CRV has poor towing too. The Forester is really a gem here. An ugly duckling, yes, but the most capable, safe and so reliable. RAV4 feels mediocre. Great reliability but feels course. Trucky. But it’s got a hybrid. I give it credit for that. But, not everyone needs a hybrid. Hybrid’s great on city roads, not freeway. Higher insurance too. And, RAV4 had a big recall 3 months ago. 🤔 tough choices really. Life’s such a series of trade offs…
