That .327 Taurus is a good looking handy snubnose revolver. Years ago I got a good deal on a Ruger new model single seven .327 federal with a 7 1/2" barrel. And you can shoot .327 federal, .32 h&r mag, .32 s&w and .32 acp out of the revolvers.

@@ToolsandTargets That is a cool looking snubnose revolver. Earlier this year I bought a used Walther P99 in .40s&w that has a green frame that says Walther made in Germany with black talon grips and a black slide that says Smith&Wesson, and looks like it belongs in a 007 Bond movie.

Here’s the kicker, when the next ammo shortage comes around, I’d be concerned with availability of 327. 38 has been around since God was a Corporal and you’re more likely to find, buy, or barter for a few rounds. Even though it may be scarce, there’s millions of rounds of 38 out there. If you buy a 327, buy yourself a couple thousand rounds.

@@geedubb2005 having just lived through the Minneapolis Marxist Revolution (I mean mostly peaceful riots) of 2020 and 2021, I can assure you that no revolver is adequate for SHTF civil defense. So, I would not seek either expect for normal personal defense. But you are correct. And 38spl can run in some Lever Actions, too. So a little better. I have a Winchester 94 and I was totally out gunned from Antifa and their automatic weapons. So, just hunker down and protect any breach of your house. Israel proves the point this week too.

Underwood really underperforming here. The Underwood ammo averaged 1036 feet per second at 50 yards, which gives it an average Ke50 of 226 energy foot pounds. By comparison, the HST averaged 1178 fps at 50 yards for an average Ke50 of 320 energy foot pounds. More velocity with a heavier bullet is really paying off on paper. In the gel, I'd call it a tie. Bigger initial wound cavity on the Underwood, but the HST penetrated deeper, and it seemed to be cutting its whole way through.

@@ToolsandTargetsThe R92 safety is indeed atrocious but it can be delt with aftermarket if you know what I mean. I got to thinking last night (it made my head hurt something fierce but I've gotten use to it after all these years) but I could see a 4" Charter Arms or even more to my liking, an 1873 Colt's clone chambered in .327 Magnum. Sadly, the .327, like the .30 Super Carry, simply never got off the ground in our area. I've seen exactly one box of .327 Magnum Federal HST as a matter of fact, but it was apparently accidently included in a case of .357 Magnum ammo that was delivered to a gun shop not far from here. But no firearms so chambered to date. It's because of videos like yours that I developed an interest in the .327 Magnum but apparently gun manufactures took a notion to limit the round to "personal defense" handguns (and precious few of them it would seem). I could see the .327 Magnum, when chambered in a R92 or 4" revolver being handy in close cover deer hunting in addition to making things difficult for cayotes. I mean, if the truth be known, the .327 Magnum is really a souped up .32-20 and more than a few deer have fallen to that little round.

Nice performance, for my money I’d go with the HST. Both did well though.

Nice test. I guess with a .31 cal projectile from a handgun depends a lot on penetration. These both pull that off very well

HST would be amazing thru 3 inch barrel, maybe hit 500 ft-lb. My Taurus .357 5 round with 3 inch gives a huge energy increase over 2", only weighs an ounce or so more. Listening Taurus? Just as easy to carry and pull as my 2" .38 for me. Maybe the ultimate defense wheelgun would be a Smith titanium/scandium 8 round with 3' barrel.

@@ToolsandTargetsI love Underwood but that HST is the one to carry in a Snubbie. Or carry a speed loader with the Underwood in it & HST in the cylinder. If that doesn't stop the threat then Run Forest Run. 🏃🐗🐻

My EDC these days is a 327 LCR with the Xtreme Defenders. I purchased some HSTs but still haven't switched over. As your tests show, it's a tough choice.

Wish Taurus would put that pistol out in 3 inch like the website says they are. I'd have one tomorrow. You could still carry concealed, have 6 rounds of near .357 power in a small frame revolver with less recoil, and trudge through the woods stoked for bear and still be in good shape. Only other company doing that is Ruger and they want $900+ msrp. The 2 inch barrel is just too short.

I think if theyd push the Underwood faster it would be an even better wound cavity. Surprising to see it was slower than the HST

Great test. I think you're right w/ HST being the best choice for defense. I think the XD might have an edge if you needed a round that was barrier blind like having to shoot from inside a car like the police sometimes have to do.

I was considering some of those Underwoods until I saw the price. I'm waiting for Doubletap to get some more of the Barnes 75 gr. all copper round. I got 1448 fps from the snubbie and the recoil is not bad at all.

HST is my go-to ammo, except for .380. And Xtreme Defender is my go-to ammo for .380. But I'd call the XD a fail in this test. There doesn't seem to be any evidence of spiraling at all. Might as well just been an FMJ. I noticed that the tips of XD revolver bullets are cut different than XD semi-auto bullets; a deep concave vs flat. Hmmm... 🤔

in our north Carolina deer rifle season you can use any center fire pistol/ revolver calibers you want with no minimum barrel length. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a deer out to around 30yds with that stubby327 mag. what better way to test your self defense ammunition. if I wasn't a good tracker I would not do it.but I'm a real good tracker. many deers legally killed here with 22 lr and 22mag. I killed many deer with 22mag vital shots. so I don't dought that 327 stubby will cleanly take a deer at reasonable distances. I greatly enjoyed the video. Papa wishing you well. 😊
