Not sure about the 30SC. Maybe if you don’t already have a 9x19 in that size. It doesn’t occupy its own space on energy for carry guns. The low 300 ft-lb are crowded with the top end .380 or weak sauce 9x19s. It’s just mass moving so recoil will be real similar. The slightly higher capacity is not relevant in my opinion, but who knows in a fringe situation 1 round might make the difference

30sc is a bit weaker than 9mm, it's really more of an in-between of 380 and 9mm
@nikos6220
@nikos6220 Жыл бұрын
@@bloodking73 correct, if you go by the proto typical load. But 9x19 easily reaches down, e.g. the Critical Defense gets only 280 ft-lb out of a 4’.

If the 9mm & 30SC were to be judged strictly on their merits and not by financial or other considerations, the 30SC would be a somewhat better option for a minimally sized CC pistol. The 9mm would be the more logical choice in a mid to full sized pistol. But, life’s not fair and the 30SC has a lot to overcome in the real world and the actual consumer market. It’s unfortunate that the creators decided to pit it squarely against the 9mm and not place it more in between the 9 and 380. More power and capacity than the 380 with less actual recoil and greater capacity than the 9mm. That would have given it its own unique traits and perhaps a better chance at success.

Never shot either one, but I like the idea of the .327. When ammo gets scarce, you have a lot more options with the .327. You got .32, .32 Longs, .32 H&R and .327 mag all in one. Before the last ammo crunch, I wouldn't have really looked at the .327 too close, since you could get .38 Special anywhere to shoot in a .357, but that all changed. 38 and 357 got hit hard and it was just as rare to see either one as it was to see any of the 32 or 327 Mag stuff. Having that extra round, paired with the chance to get something to shoot out of it makes the 327 look a lot better than it did a few years ago. The 30 Super Carry just don't float my boat at all. It seems like an answer to a question that nobody even asked. Keep 'em comin', Tools!

The versatility idea is nice, but honestly it's no less versatile than .38 or .44 or .45. 38 Short Colt, 38 Long Colt, 38 Special, & .357 magnum in the same revolver 44 Russian, 44 Special, & 44 magnum in the same revolver 45 Schofield, 45 Colt, 454 Casull, & 460 S&W magnum in the same revolver And by the way, the .32acp has a thinner rim so the headspacing won't be as reliable as the other cartridges in that caliber.

I think it's a smart & fair comparison to test these two rounds against each other . They're both .312 in diameter , and they're both one step below in the power factor to a bigger cartridge (9mm vs .30 Super & .357Mag vs .327Fed Mag). I can see now why they were created but I think their success will be short lived . Ammo is hard to come by , and very expensive . I should know , I own a .327 Mag. Anyways , yes , I agree with your conclusion , the .327 Mag out-performed the .30 Super even though the .30 Super did pretty well too . Really GREAT video like always !

Consider the non-X if pocket carrying. Sights are non-snag, and no exposed hammer. Great for hoodie carry as well, shoot right through the pocket, or purse for woman. Dirtbag won't be able to jam up the hammer either if he tries to grab it. Double action especially in self defense situation is no big deal. You won't be shooting it all day especially with the new HST round. I get to about the 4th to 5th shot of the cylinder, and my hand starts to hurt with my LCR. Start with the Hydro-shock. It has considerably less recoil. I heard the Gold Dots are good as well, but haven't been able to find any. 6 shots of that will be plenty.

I pocket carry a 327 LCR on the farm. But usually carry handloaded 32 H&R Mag. I figure that has enough power for critters around the farm. I occasionally carry the 327 Federal loads for Self Defense. But ammo availability is pretty tough and prices are high. I do like 6 rounds vs 5 that a 38 would have. But truth is, for SD I usually carry a 9mm. The 32 family is too often overlooked for new/elderly shooters. Often a 38 snub is just too much for them to want to practice with. But a 32 long is easy enough, and 32 H&R isn't all that bad for them either. And you can shoot both of those calibers in a 327 Federal revolver. 30 Super Carry unfortuntally will probably never catch on. It will be simular to 357 SIG. Some will love it, but it's never going to catch on.

Nice test that clarifies the .327 Magnum is definitely the more powerful of the two. A good SJHP bullet needs to be made for that caliber to foster some fragspanding performance. I'm hoping a gun manufacturer comes out with a pocket pistol about the size of the tiny .380s and chambers it in .30 Super Carry. You'd figure with the diameter of the bullet they should be able to construct a rather flat little pistol that would be more powerful than .380 while giving an extra round or two in the magazine.

Both did well, but I don't see myself investing in 30soup anytime soon. However that 327 would make an excellent decision for revolver carry. A little bit more manageable than 357, recoil about like a stout 38+p resulting in faster follow ups. You either get a slimmer cylinder or an extra round in the same size, (which matters a little bit more in an already lower capacity revolver.) It's just about guaranteed to reach it's expansion threshold with high velocities like that, def increases the probability. It's literally explosive from a rifle, pretty capable of doing a lot of work all around. Then there's the versatility of the 32 fam in general. Sure are a lot of reasons to like the 327 fed mag, very appealing. It's a cartridge I'd like to get into. Great video, appreciate you sharing it. Thanks 👍

If youre going to carry a 2'' snubby the 327 Mag is an efficient round to use. Yes, the 357 Mag is more powerful but the 327 generally gives 80% + of the performance with less recoil and in some revolvers an extra round in the cylinder. The 30 SC is another great cartridge & performs very well BUT it has been chambered in 9mm sized guns and only carries 1-2 more rounds per mag. Even though they're both great cartridges niether appear to be increasing in popularity.

.327 mag is a beast for it's size. A lot of firepower in a small little J-frame. I was never really all that impressed with .30 SC...it always seemed, at least to me, an answer to a question that nobody asked. If they could have packed that kind of performance (even a bit less performance) in a lower pressure round, it could have been a great replacement for .380 auto.

@PassivePortfolios

Both did were well. The question is which will catch on? The 30 SC is basically a 9 mm lite and it unfortunately has to compete directly with the widely popular 9 mm. So it has a tough slog ahead. The 327 mag. however is more versatile because the revolvers can shoot 32 H&R mag, 32 Long and 32 S&W, which may give it an advantage to catch on. It is also less violent to shoot than the 357 mag, from short barreled revolvers and has an extra round capacity. Great job on these tests, we all appreciate your efforts and commentary is outstanding.

327 Mag FTW! Yeoow! It's too hot in the hot tub! The difference in barrel measurement was a surprise to me too awhile back. A 9mm semi-auto with a 3.1" barrel is really only a 2" when you subtract the SAAMI spec for 9mm overall length of 1.1".
@cheeng1
@cheeng1 Жыл бұрын
Terminal ballistics put it between 380 & 9mm but more to 9mm side for sure. However, it cannot supplant the 380 b/c it simply requires a larger platform for the amount of energy. Deep carry (micro 380) is where 380 is targeted and 30SC & 9mm cannot get there. J-frames can get close but it's revolver platform, slow reload, etc. There's a few auto platforms that tried it but the recoil makes them intolerable for mass appeal.

I want to see the S&W MP chambered in 327 magnum. With the tempo system they use in the 5.7 and the new 22 magnum, they’ve shown they can handle both (1) long, high pressure rounds; and (2) reliable feeding of rimmed cartridges.

@@gonzob9609 nah, that’s inaccurate on two counts. First, 30 super is cool and all, but it’s no 327. Doesn’t have anywhere near the case capacity. It’s more like a warm 32 h&r. Second, it hasn’t been chambered in the M&P and hasn’t been chambered in a firearm using the tempo system. The shield ez is not the m&p.

@@johnnyk5 How about 1450 fps with an 85 grain XTP right off of the Hodgdon website with A #7. That reload I'm pretty sure will hit 2000 fps out of the High Point carbine. Everything has a trade off. They used fast powder so it burns 100% of the powder, and a 100 grain bullet. Don't think you'd like the blast, sound out of a 3.68" barrel. Go with a full bore 10 MM. I think you're dismissing the whole package. 52K psi to work with is no joke. The different .32 caliber rounds out there have to do with the gun not blowing up. I usually load everything in S&W Long brass for my 327 for ease of sizing, and gaining more barrel, unless I need the volume for longer bullets like the leigh ED, and 100 grain bullets, then I'll use H&R brass. Easily obtainable from Starline. Those HST's are a kick in the nuts even for the 327

The 50-yard numbers are some pretty interesting results on these rounds. The .30 Super Carry, with its 100-grain bullet, managed an average V50 of 1090, giving it an average of 263 energy foot pounds at 50 yards. The .327 Federal Magnum, with its 104-grain bullet, managed an average 50-yard velocity of 1206 feet per second for a Ke50 of 335 energy foot pounds, which means that it was making 26 energy foot pounds more energy at 50 yards than the .30 Super Carry was making at the muzzle. That HST round out of my 18 oz LCR will knock fillings loose. Have an old SP-101 as well with a 3" barrel. Gets around 1390 fps average with that round, and it's a pleasure to shoot. I'll stick to the Hydro Shock's for the LCR. I'm sure you could hit that 1500 fps with the 4" version. The .312 caliber is a penetrator, and kicks the 9's arse by 3" in just about every gel test I've seen. Sectional density rules. 4" barrel would make a good bear gun. I reload, the 327, and 30 Super uses the same bullets, and is a no brainer for me. Hi-Point is selling a $300 carbine in the 30 Super. If my calculations are correct, using an 85 XTP to get more case volume, and Accurate 7 will get you into 30 carbine territory, 2000 fps with a 16" barrel, and awesome bullet, and stay under the 50K psi. Don't know if the barrel could handle that velocity. Pretty sure they're using CFE- Pistol at high 4 grain, or 5 count. I'm seeing only seeing 1500 fps on all velocity vids I've seen.
