Dr Thomas Dykstra has some brilliant work that would explain why the non organic cauliflower rotted before the organic cauliflower. His studies have shown that pests do not attack healthy plants. The way he measures the health of the plant is through its brix level - bugs simply cannot digest plant material above a certain brix threshold. The organic cauliflower likely had a higher brix level, which prevented the fungus from attaching it like it did the non organic cauliflower.

So why did the Cauliflower rot quicker?
@hatz116 күн бұрын
If this were true, then the organic cauliflower would have rotted first - this did not happen. The non-organic cauliflower rotted much faster - where exactly are these preservatives you speak of?
@coreyn6 күн бұрын
@@Anon-u3i Because it had higher nitrates and weaker cell walls (less Bricks) Organic plants are less likely to carry such chemical nutrient residues and may retain more natural microbial diversity, which can competitively inhibit harmful fungi. The non organic cauliflower didn’t have a chance. It had no natural microbial defense and no natural antioxidants created and given through the soil food web. This experiment was so brilliant to teach many what’s really going on.
@coreyn6 күн бұрын
@@hatz11Absolutely not my friend. Organic has natural antioxidants and a very good immune defense from higher microbial levels in and around the plant tissue. The fungi attacked the non organic because it had weaker cell walls and higher nitrates still readily available in the plant tissues. The store bought non organic cauliflower didn’t have a chance against the organic one because it has “Low Bricks count” which having a higher bricks count from a good microbial food web in the soil creates and strengthens the immune system by bolstering the cell walls preventing invasion from pathogens and fungi!

At this point it isn’t even about taste/flavour. These chemicals/pesticides vibrate at a different frequency or vibration than the organic counterpart. The worms are simply attracted to the high frequencies of organic food rather than the low frequencies or man made or chemically induced food. It’s very simple yet this fact eludes most people’s minds for an entire lifetime. Something tells me that this is the real suppression of true information. Keep on going weedy! Dr Thomas Dykstra's work explains why this happens. Dr Dykstra has demonstrated that bugs/microorganisms do not attack healthy plants that are above a certain brix level simply because the bugs cannot digest the plant material when it is above this brix level. Healthier plants have higher brix levels - Brix is a measure of the amount of sugars in the plant - higher brix means more sugars, which means more photosynthesis is occurring. This is a very effective way of objectively measuring plant health.

Hey, weedy!! It is reasonable to assume that worms can taste traces of pesticides and other potentially harmful compounds within plant tissues, and that would explain the observed preference. However, did you consider the differences in microbiota. The bacteria diversity must be quite different from organic to non-organic products. This would also explain the different decomposition process observed with the cauliflower, in which it seemed fungi had everything for them to begin with and did not have to compete against bacteria... Just saying this to provide more thoughts! Thanks for the video!!!

Wondering if the two types are different cultivars as well. Grocery store produce is bred for shelf life in most cases, not taste or nutritional value. Though that's changing now, and scientists are mindful of the taste profile (but not nutritional value). I suspect the organic one is more nutritious as well, which is directly correlated with the amount of life in the soil.

Thats very interesting but that was not a complete test. You demonstrated a preference but we still don't know why the worms preferred the organic. Would be really interesting to see the results.

Weedy ! I need your help! I've got flying black aphids on absolutely everything in my garden here in south australia! What do I do ??
@TheWeedyGarden6 күн бұрын
Pyrethrum works well as a short-term solution to reduce aphid populations, especially on contact. However, it may not completely eliminate them, as some may escape or reinfest the area. Apply pyrethrum carefully to avoid harming beneficial insects like bees and ladybugs, which can help control aphids naturally. Spraying in the evening or early morning when pollinators are less active can minimize this risk.
@gypsy11116 күн бұрын
@TheWeedyGarden my garden is a ladybird factory! Ive never seen so many ladybugs ever...but they aren't the regular fluffy aphids they have wings! There are no eggs or normal aphids, just these small black flying bugs with wings. I sprayed a peppermint oil and water mix on them, they just flew off and came back once it dissipated.
@asbjorgvanderveer50506 күн бұрын
Find an easily grown trap crop for the aphids! In the region I garden, in Eastern Canada I've observed this to be the largetooth Aspen also known as Poplar (Populus Grandidentata). I hand-water much of my veg garden, really looking ALL around. One thing that caught my eye: the number of ants always hanging out at the tops of small suckers of aspen- in surrounding meadow strips around our organic garden). Why were they there in such abundant numbers? They were grooming clusters of black aphids there...milking them for their honeydew. It's a sticky substance the aphids produce whilst the ants give them a bellyrub! 🤔💡I don't mind ants as I love birds that eat ants, newts that eat slugs, and so on. Leaving everyone to do their job has made gardening easier, and more enjoyable for me! Nature has the answer for your aphid problem too, but it is specific to where you are.
