Nice job both came out great, have just bought that same laser a few weeks ago, for me it’s been a steep learning curve, not quite the 45 minute set up time as on the website, have also struggled with cutting settings especially with plywood and 3mm mdf but I am sure I will get there in the end, looking forward to seeing what you can accomplish with the same machine, good luck 👌👌👌👍👍👍🇦🇺

Nice we can compare notes! I’ve had excellant success with the 3mm basswood ply that came with the machine. I have a feeling the cabinet grade 1/4 I’ve been trying to cut is just a different hardness and glue type then the basswood and that is why I was having so much trouble with it. Dialing in the initial settings can be a real pain. But, out of all the lasers I’ve tested I like this one the most so far.

This is so interesting as you always show the true event, warts and all. However, there is something special about seeing the way a serious craftsman such as yourself handles and touches the items they make or repair - it's the product of love for the material and the process and adds so much value. I know which one I'd prefer. 🙂

Sure, the laser-cut version is "cheaper" but what if you count all the time trying? (practicing depth cut, messing up the first attempt, etc.) PLUS, the handmade one is more beautiful and has a story behind it!

Very cool that you got a CO2 laser. I hope a review is upcoming. And yeah -- getting consistent results when laser-cutting plywood is hard, and that's something I don't think I've ever heard mentioned in all the other laser-cutter videos I've watched. Thank you for confirming my observations on that point. And psst: "ideal" ≠ "idea" 😉

I know. It's a habit I picked up in childhood along with a few other words I have trouble pronouncing, I know it's wrong, and I don't care to change it. Yes, the inconsistencies in plywood even species to species is a pain. Basswood cuts wonderfully, but it can be hard to source at decent prices and it takes stain like crap.

If someone is woodworking smalls for a living then using a CNC, and laser cutter is the way to go, but to a retired hobbyist like myself the CNC/laser processes and the products they make have the stink of factory work all over them.

I can see that. I wish I had more free time to get creative with them. I've cut out some stuff I've designed myself versus making plans and they can do some pretty cool stuff that way.
