The Allies muster for the counterattack against the German held Bulge. In the depths of winter, this campaign will be a grind, and despite being short on supply, German forces will not give up the towns and villages of the Ardennes lightly. Although the Battle of the Bulge is a predominantly American operation, British, Canadian, and Belgian forces also contribute. At the village of Bure, a brutal battle unfolds.

@@me6096-The Germans (aside from the SS) and Wallies had a general understanding on all battlefields that could have dated back centuries to knights and aristocratic officers fighting set-piece battles over honor. They mostly didn't hate each other. It's really sad so many killed one another when so very few held any real animosity towards one another that wasn't tied to their buddies who had died earlier in the conflict. But the Fascist leaders wanted to move the borders on a map and make their dicks appear larger, so they sent millions of poor soldiers forth to kill and die for them, and the democracies had to follow suit to stop them from taking everything. It sucks. The Axis' enemies were within, and they either didn't realize or didn't dare to make a move against them. Nonetheless, there were no end of examples of common soldiers being merciful towards the other. They hated the war far more than they hated each other. It's just awful that so many Germans fought so hard for so long for....nothing remotely tolerable.

the thing is that it was terribly difficult to maintain that balance. If one side kills medics, the other side kills medics, and repeat. The moment the cycle of mercy ends, the cycle of hatred starts. It's part of why medics in the Pacific were less likely to help wounded Japanese - booby traps.

The College d'Alzon , the biggest building in the village was actually sheltering a substential group of civilians during the fighting. They shelling was so intense, they thought they would never get out of it alive. To be identified in case they were buried alive in the basement, some wrote theur names on the walls, most with candle wax. Those names are still there today.

Even the most experienced and battle hardened soldiers reach a point where they've had enough of killing. That, and slaughtering medics is pretty low act and tends to enrage your enemy, which is never a good idea when they have the advantage. But yes, it's good to learn that even as desperate as the Germans must have been at this point even the feared SS men did not resort to indiscriminate killing. Well, some of them did I guess, but apparently not in this particular battle.

It's amazing to watch how you guys have progressed since I subscribed in 2020. The details and information are amazing. I'd say that your content is very unbiased as you said you hoped it is. It's always been fully detailed and never directly calling one side of each conflict the worst of the two. I wish I had the researching power of you guys as my partner and I have quite a few family members who were active and sacrificed themselves across both WWI and WWII. One dying while crashing the crippled Lancaster, he was piloting into the countryside of a village after a foggy night mission to avoid civilian casualties. The men of his crew refused to leave their pilot and all crashed together with only one surviving.

The Americans were absolutely paranoid that the battle of the Bulge was to be reported as an all-American battle, under no circumstances was the impression to be given they were rescued by the British. Though actual command of the US 1st and 9th Armies was placed under British General Montgomery. Eisenhower had all British involvement in the battle removed from battle reports, and so he was livid when Monty held a press conference after the battle. Such was American insecurity that engagements like the one covered here are never mentioned.

B.S The modern british are desperately trying to write them selves in to more involvement than they actually had . The main thrust in the north was stopped by u.s troops before monty was allowed to take part , emphasis was moved south and the push ran out of steam before the meuse . Just because command of the US 1st and 9th Armies was placed under montgomery doesn't mean the british did a lot of fighting . British inferiority complex keeps them crying in the comments .

@@user-sq2ng4ht1u No, Montgomery took over command of US 1st and 9th Armies on 20th December. The Germans were not stopped until the 24th at Dinant when Monty was in command. He also commanded the American advance pushing the Germans back 24 Dec to 17 January 1945. The fact is Monty led US Troops through all but 3 days of the Battle. However because of American politics or what ever you want to call it. There was a campaign to write his contribution out of the official account. Even going so far as promoting Bradley for winning the battle, though he never took an active part in it.
