There is a story during the War of Attrition (between the '67 and '73 wars) there were many air to air engagements between Israel and Egypt with Egypt usually on the losing end. Their Russian advisors would criticize the Egyptian pilots and say that if Russians were behind the controls they would sweep the skies clean of the Israeli planes. I was able to reenlist in the Navy Reserve early 2001 after trying many years since my active duty discharge in 87. Coincidence? Lol. I remember the USS Cole, except the time I thought of the USS Stark that was in the same waters my cruiser was in a few months before my discharge, and got hit by 2 Exocets That was embarrassing to be corrected on. Thanks for the channel, BTW, I enjoyed the land battle one you did on Guadalcanal but have seen any others concerning the long battle there. Seeing all those rising sun markers was wild action.

Beautifully told. My grandfather was aboard Fanshaw Bay during this battle and he always said Admiral Sprague was his favorite CO. Most docs write him off as being somewhat incompetent. When you see what actually happened, iit is obvious he was playing war games And did exactly what US naval doctrine told him to do.
