In the winter of 1950, the mountainous terrain surrounding the man-made Chosin Reservoir in present-day North Korea became the setting for one of the most demanding tests of resolve, courage, and physical endurance in the history of the Marine Corps.
The Battle of the Chosin Reservoir lasted approximately 17 days and pitted 120,000 enemy Chinese troops against a force of just 30,000 U.S. Marines, Sailors, and Soldiers.
The “Chosin Few”, as the Marines of the 1st Marine Division came to be known, faced relentless enemy assaults, sub-zero temperatures, limited logistics, and no hope of reinforcement.
The Marines fought constantly throughout these 17 days, carving their way out of the frozen reservoir and toward the port of Hungnam, where the Marines were able to complete their withdraw via the sea alongside other UN troops and thousands of Korean refugees.
13 Medals of Honor were awarded during the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir, 10 of them to United States #Marines.

Semper Fi! I was stationed in Korea from Jan 1994 - Jan 1995 as my first duty station in the Army. I got forced out of the Marines due to cutbacks in 1993 at the end of my first contract, and couldn't re-enlist as my MOS was full. So, I wandered around for a bit, because I had planned on retiring as a Marine, but life had other plans. I joined the Army to continue to serve as they weren't restricted to not being able to take in prior service at the time. Korea was effing cold! The coldest I'd experienced to that time. Korea was no joke and I'm glad I was able to serve there. Since it is still a cease-fire situation, it was a different world being there. I now relate all cold weather I experience to the measuring stick of how cold Korea was. Thanks again and the highest respect to all those of my fellow Marines that fought there. You earned your time in the sun as you've already fought in the coldest part of hell.

I was lucky enough to be around the Korean War Memorial at night. It's a really nice memorial during the day but night time, and from what I've seen pictures of it in the snow at night, it's......I don't know how to describe it. It totally changes the feel.

I didn't expect the Marine channel to make a video on this, this year. I spent around Nov. 27- Dec, 13 (The amount of days the battle took) spreading facts about this battle to everyone I knew who didn't know about this and it's quite sad the fact that hardly no one knows about this sacrifice done here. The Battle of the Chosin Reservoir was as daunting as any battle in the Corps’ history . . . and that says a great deal. Yet, Americans - Marines, FMF Corpsmen, Navy and Marine TacAir - performed superbly, withdrew with their living, dead, wounded and equipment, and most importantly enhanced the standards of sacrificial excellence under the most challenging and exacting circumstances, which remain as the beacon for combat distinction today. S/F.

Agree with your assessment of US Marine and Navy forces at Chosin. Also present were elements of US Army's 65th Infantry of 3rd Infantry Div. My dad was a warrant officer in the 65th.

Years ago, at the South Korean War Memorial, they had a display about a train and people who got on the train in a hurry (not like catching the metro) to help save another group, who were in trouble. They never came back. Does anyone know what event that was in the war? Sorry Im being vague but unfortunately I cant remember if it was US or South Koreans or a bit of both involved. It wasnt in the sections relating to other UN forces.

Marine Corps. If you have even considered it, the choice has been made. That is, if they will have you. You will find the best of the best in the corps. Keep a righteous path and you could be a Marine some day.
