Yesterday, 27 November, marked the anniversary of the start of the Battle of The Chosin Reservoir, which lasted until 13 December 1950. More than 30,000 troops from the United States and their United Nations allies fought their way through the harsh, frozen terrain of the Chosin Reservoir while battling 120,000 Chinese soldiers.
The Marines from the 1st Marine Division faced relentless enemy attacks in temperatures reaching as low as 40 degrees below zero. Ultimately, without supplies, dangerously low on ammunition, and with no reinforcements en-route, the allied troops were forced to fight their way out of the frozen reservoir and towards the beaches at the Hungnam Perimeter. Throughout their fighting withdraw, they inflicted heavy causalities on the Chinese, and earned the moniker of the “Chosin Few” for their determination and fighting spirit.

My father was a Navy corpsman for 30 years. 1940-1970. He grew up in New Jersey but said he has never been so cold in his life! He didn't say much more about Korea and I knew not to ask about it. Really the greatest generation of men and women! And any other combat veteran's! Welcome home!

OP Smith's leadership and decision making at Chosin were outstanding. He was given a suicide mission, lied to, given terrible orders. He never did the easy thing, and in many cases was borderline insubordinate. In the end, every decision he made was near perfect, and his leadership was towering. One of the greatest feats of generalship in military history.

I was sitting up on the top part of a bench at the beach in Gulf Shores, Ala. back in mid Sept. of 1991. I was just looking out over the empty beach and the quiet slow rolling clear blue green water of the Gulf and enjoying the late afternoon warmth. It was pretty much deserted as it was in the school year and there was virtually no one on the beach, even at midday. As I was enjoying the solace a black van pulled up and parked as was the solitary vehicle in the parking lot as I rode my 12 speed to the beach from my apt. On the lower right rear of the van was a sticker that said "The Chosin Few" with a outline of Korea and the dates pertaining to the battle at the resovoir. A grey headed gentleman got out of the van and came around to the passenger side rear a retrieved s bag and a rod and reel. Inodded at him and nodded toward the sticker and asked if he had been at the resovoir. The guy was probably early 60s of some, lean and fit with a tight face that told me probably had seen some shit. He said yeah, he was there. I offered him a beer and he accepted. He then began to talk a little about his experience and he got a look on his face like he was going back in time and I wasn't there hardly. He talked a little while and then seemed sort of embarrassed. I told him my little military history which was nothing and thanked him for sharing and told him it was good talking to someone who stood hard and was an actualpart of history. I gave him a beer for fishing and headed home thinking that I hoped I hadn't opened up any bad memories for him.

My dad was in one of the few army units who fought alongside the marines at Hagaru ri at east ridge. He was a member of company D, tenth combat engineer battalion, third infantry division. There was a book about his company called Kestner’s Mongrels.

I have an Uncle that enlisted in the USMC reserves on his 17th B-day. Talked my grandmother into it by saying that there was no way anything was going to happen. My grandfather tried 3 times to enlist in WW2 but was denied because he had too many dependents. Shortly after he started his senior year of high school he got activated and sent to Korea and his unit was attached too 1st Mar Div he was a participant of the battle of the frozen Chosin. When I wanted to enlist my mother tried to get him to talk me out of it, he wouldn't do it. Addition, if I remember correctly the lost platoon at PI was in his series at boot camp.

I believe the Lost Platoon at Parris Island was during the Korean War. I was there Oct-Dec 1973 in Platoon 395, India Co, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sergeant who served 1973-1977.

My late uncle was in a USMC reserve unit that was at Chosin, The B Company Marines marched down Superior Street in Duluth, MN to the Train that brought them to the coast and a ship to Korea. He made it out.

Hello, my name's not important but I am a deaf grandson of a marine who fought there at the battle of the chosin reservoir. He was wounded and came back to Michigan with a purple heart as I was told by family, and he drunk himself to death. Was never the same. Died before I was born and I never seen what he looked like. I have tried and failed to find out anything about him and would like to know. My family must have been too hurt by his loss to show his pics anymore before I was born and his situation was always tough to talk about. I found it depressing. My wrestling cap who also is a marine sent out a request for information on him but never heard back from him. If any of you know a Fred Silversides from Michigan who was a marine that got a purple heart from that battle, please reach out to me. I have always wanted to see his face. Semper fi.

This was fascinating and I have nothing but the highest respect for both the USMC and USA forces which fought their way out of the Chosin Reservoir. For a deeper dive into the unbelievable suffering, heroism and indomitable will both the Marine and US Army forces exemplified at Chosin, I would recommend viewing the PBS, American Experience documentary, “The Battle of Chosin Reservoir.” I actually got to meet and speak with a 1st Marine veteran of Chosin a few years back. He was an older gentleman, wearing a “Korean War Veteran” red cap. I introduced myself and this gentleman told me he was indeed at Chosin. Machine gunner at Yo-Dam-Ni (Sp?). What he described was terrifying. Those forces were surrounded and outnumbered (some sources say 8:1, others 10:1) for days. He stated that the Chinese attacked in enormous human waves every night, and that it was so brutally cold US weapons (and most other equipment froze up and they had a terrible time with that) Also said his .30 Cal., Browning MG would be fired for so long the barrel glowed red hot, even in unbearable cold. Tip your hat and thank any veteran you know. The guys at Chosin are legendary.

@@papertiger6649 The Chinese attacked 30,000 US/UN/UK/SK forces with 120,000-200,000 men....4 to 8 times as many. Their orders were to annihilate them. UN/US/UK/SK forces suffered about 6000 dead and 14,000-17,000 total casualties. The Chinese suffered 60,000 casualties. 6 Chinese Divisions wiped themselves out trying destroy the Marines. However the Americans fight, it has consistently been shown to be effective, which is what matters.

The tactical failure of securing South Korea during the initial invasion was the old WWII Bazooka failing to stop the swarms of Russian Tanks. Unlike German and Japanese armor, the spiffy new slant armor deployed by Russian weapons makers made the famed bazookas obsolete. They simply drove right through it.
