Battle of the Clarinet Ligatures: Which One Sounds Best?

Very slight differences to me (all sounded good haha)! I've always loved Silverstein but Rovner was the first brand of ligature I played on waaaay back in the day. Can't go wrong with it for sure. I'm currently playing a Vandoren Optimum and it's been alright but I'm thinking about switching back to Rovner! Thanks for the vid man!

Interesting comparison! I agree that the Silverstein sounds best here. Focused and full sound. The Rovner, to my ear, was less focused/bright, particularly in the lower register. The standard metal was actually my #2 pick, but I agree it doesn't give 100%. It also doesn't have the fullness of the Silverstein. I wonder how much of the Silverstein tone comes from the fact that you've been working with it so long! Making unconscious adjustments to that particular setup, etc.

Forgot to say, I'm currently using a Vandoren Optimum, which is an upgrade from a standard metal two-screw that finally died on me.

Yeah, we definitely need to consider the fact that I am used to playing certain equipment. I used to have a vandoren optimum, I have no idea where it went. I was looking for it for this video with no luck.

At 85 y.o, with a hearing that rolls off sharply at 4KHz, I hear no difference. The hearing experts tell me that we have overtone memories wherein our brain fills in the higher frequency overtones when given the fundamental and a few overtones within say 4KHz. So my Rovner knock off sounds fine. I know the overtones are there because my doggie joins in. Maybe it's painful? When I listen to violin music with headphones, it sounds bright even though the overtones aren't coming though. Growing old has its pros and cons. But consider the alternative.
