Do remember this is an adaptation of historical tourney rules, not life and death combat. Historically, tourneys would involve fights similar to this where the fighting doesn't stop until x number of blows have been exchanged. This has martial merit because of the fact that people don't just fall down and die when you hit them with a weapon. Unless you hit them in a very specific way they will continue to be able to fight back for seconds to minutes. Sure, they'll die later, but that doesn't help you if they're still active and able to do the same to you. There is a bit of frustrating gaming going on (the last fight, guy in the red going for the legs and keeping himself completely uncovered) which goes against the spirit of the combat, but this has some historical martial merit. Also, thrusting is banned for safety reasons (it can go through visors and take out an eye for example, though I don't agree with this addition - I reckon they should put fencing mesh behind the visors, or something on the end of the weapons so they can't get through so easily). If they were actually trying to simulate fights to the death, the two of them would be halfswording and trying to stab into the gaps in each others armour. But this is a combat sport, based on tourney rules. So try not to transpose your own expectations onto it.

However, I see ZERO technique here. This is honestly some of the most stupid stuff I've ever seen: 5:14 Hacking brainless on each other without protecting yourself or moving at all - awesome... Well, if the rules allow that kind of "fighting"... then... "OK". This looks more like an exercise in endurance than a fight and is far far away from the "art" in martial art. I can understand that the crowd is more attached to this spectacle than for example HEMA longsword tournaments or even Escrima fighting like the "Dog brothers" do it. Actually I personally enjoy stick fighting with gloves + fencing mask and groin protection a lot more than anything steel these days because I don't have to wear that much of protective gear. Edit: After reading Page 15 of the rules www.armoredcombatsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/IMCF_Rules_2020.pdf I know why it looks as stupid as it is: Goal is basically just to make as many hits as possible within a round. Seriously, they could throw all the armor and weapons away and slap each other with bare hand. It would still look the same. It's also funny that each action gives the same amount of points, a disarm or bringing the opponent to the ground should score more to encourage different actions and tactics.

um .. they are using hand & half swords.. are they not allowed to take the off hand of the sword and do a take down or disarm? are they allowed to use the pommel or the crossguard? (murderstroke)

Wow that's some horrible rules over there. I see the point of thrusting/stabbing being dangerous, but allowing only 2 forms of strikes (left and right slash to the head) makes it sooooo boring and lame. Disrespect.

and where did you hear about those rules?

Just watch the video, that's all they do. Stabbing is probably the most effective attack (one of my primary types of attacks), and there's none in the video, therefore it must be forbidden by the rules.

cus they're wearing full plate armour, a shield would be useless, their armour could already withstand everything
