Their formation looks like a lot more than 9,000 troops. Judging by old WWII photos I've seen, it looks more like 20,000 mounted troops. Imagine a charge by 20,000 cavalry armed with lances, and bows. It is an irresistible force that will crush any infantry..

Such thing actually existed. That battle took place at Eylau during the Napoleonic wars. A huge french cavalry force led by Marshall Murat like 5 times these numbers charged into Russia's army and won the day. Also known as the charge of the 80 squadrons.
