Battle of the Planners | Bound Book or Rings?

Wayyy to many choices out there. I have purchased and resold more planners this year than ever before. I still don't have my system figured out. I thought about selling it all and using an old school notebook lol. I very much appreciate this video it completely validates my own struggles right now. Sometimes being influenced by others on social media can cause me to forget what I actually like. Thanks Sam!!

I’ve been in the exact same place! Get rid of all the planners and leave social media. And the way people unfollow here and on IG based on what I’m using is also frustrating. People are so fickle.

The only two people who come to mind that have stayed with one planner (yet still dabble in other planners) are Daksina and Helen from the Coffee Monstez Co. almost everyone else I follow is just as conflicted as the rest of us. There is just too much out there to choose from. 🤪

i love long rambly planner videos!!! please don’t apologize ❤️ i have my personal planning set in a hobo weeks. but i have an extremely busy job and i keep bouncing around - i’m trying to make it work!! 😭 😂 currently it’s date/time specific things in personal rings, long to do lists kinda gtd style in half letter discs - as of today 🤦🏻‍♀️ i should prolly move all the gosh darn projects in there too. *sigh* the struggle is real!

I agree, too many choices makes things overwhelming for me sometimes. This year, I’m keeping it simple. I have a cut down a5 stalogy that I’m using. Not sure for how long but so far I am using it as my everyday/preplan planner. And most importantly, I am enjoying it so far.

Real. That’s all it is. Real. I had kept my discs and some planner binders because I enjoyed discbound/ringbound planning with the hope that I’ll get back to them in the future. Right now I’m enjoying bound planners/journals with some spiral-bound ones (which is not my preferred type but I’m okay with it). Last year I had left the majority of the entries blank in my 5-yr Hobonichi A5 & A6 because I got discouraged with my writing utensil choice. And it is what it is. Real.

I bought a 2022-23 weekly Moleskine with the thought of using the extra pages for notes! I am not feeling the Weeks even though it is doing everything I need. I feel like it makes me an unhealthy perfectionist.

I really understand using different planners til the one or two jump to the front as favorite. I adore the hand stitched planner you have!! The planner that is becoming a favorite of mine is the Sterling Ink Common Planner. It has almost everything I want, and plenty of room to add extras (habit trackers which I’m actually using this year!) I’m still wanting an A6 weeks bound planner, which means making my own in a Stalogy. I just need to take the time to do it. It would be my fave for taking with me. I love your videos because they are real! 😅

The larger Moleskine would be perfect - if only they scooched the days upwards and used the extra space to give Sunday its own slot! That's my favourite format. And yes, the Sarasa vintage pens are gorgeous - especially the blue-grey... and green-black... and blue-black..

I seriously can’t go into a Staples without getting something new! No matter if I think I am content, when I try to go bigger than I always come back to small… Rings, spiral now, bound, micro size HP. No more purchases of planners for at least 3 months. It would be nice to fill more pages honestly!

Too many choices indeed. And it causes decision fatigue! I think we can make just about anything work if we try hard enough. It just depends on our mood and what's going on at the time. I say use what work for you - even if that means you change up monthly (or more frequently) - as long as you're keeping all the "balls in the air" that's all that matters. 💕

Can’t wait to hear what you say. From the top I can say I completely relate!! Rings to me offer all the organization with non of the warm fuzzy feelings on the other hand a bound book is so cozy but I NEVER finish them. So here is my plan, rings for planning and a bound book for commonplace, brain dumps, and monthly journaling. I even returned my Hobonichi today to limit myself. I get the struggle and the choices are endless. For me the FOMO on social media really messes with me! 🙌 Solidarity sister! BTW I love your composition notebook.

I’m with you and not finalized yet either. Test out fcc size printables from peanuts planner co… I found them to fit perfectly in my moterm personal size (provided your not a stuffer…and I don’t think you are) or REALLY perfect if you put in 25mm rings….and gives just enough more width but still rhe personal profile. It’s really lovely.

Keep what you use 😀I use a 2 bound planners in one cover. One a bullet journal which I set up with sections for daily ‘journaling’ and the other for projects. I would love a bound journal with dot pages and art paper pages for daily drawing.

Hi Sam! Try putting the elastic around the back cover of your daily, instead of leaving it looks behind, and then try putting it into your HSLT cover. I've had a few fit into tight covers that way. When the elastic is behind the cover it gets more bunched up I think and takes up more room.... Crossig my fingers for you! ♥️ If that doesn't work, the book is too thick for that cover probably 😔.

Have you tried running a butter knife in the pocket and then wrapping the elastic around the back cover and fold it down for the excess and taping that down with washi so it doesn’t bunch up? Usually it’s a bit of glue and loosening it a smidge.

This is my life right now!!! So I have a Moterm pocket luxe using pocket XL inserts as well and then I tuck in my moleskine pocket weekly in the pocket rings just to satisfy the urge. Sorta using the moleskine as a pre planner to justify carrying it lol but then also wanting to use my weeks any ways for now its working ish haha. Thanks for the video!

TFS Sam 🙂 "the struggle is real"... For some reason this year I'm having a hard time figuring out two of my set ups. I'm not sure why this year is giving me issues but hope it clears up soon since we're almost 1/2 way thru January already. I've loved Moleskine for so so many years. So far this year it's my personal EDC. I hate the monthly as well as Saturday & Sunday being on the same row so much. I wish they really would change this & surprised they haven't w/how many people complain about this. I also love Paperblanks for book bound planners.

Hi Sam! I finally found a Navy Blue Mega weeks the last one!😊 I was not into the bright colors and the funky designs ( it’s not for me). But I tried a dupe during my search also. I love having something in my purse at appointments. And not convinced if I wanted to carry a Hobo Cousin daily. But my family/household planner is still in discbound/rings…I may never truly leave rings…too much family stuff to track and I don’t want to have 5 planners or more to track. I set my limit at 3 maximum planners this year. All of my Sarasa pens will be busy. Thanks Sam for all your help! Forever subscriber here. Take care!

My Filofax is falling to pieces so I have purchased the zip one for my handbag, I have the same dilemma with my plans for crafting planner, I used a happy planner mini which a loved but needed to be a bit bigger, i then changed to the classic, same inserts but hated the size. Trying to do a hybrid diy version with pages from Etsy and Filofax clip book, a great video and now you having me thinking about Moleskin, more accessible in the Uk than happy planners😂

Hi again... In regards to your cover for your hardcover journal... Did you try using the front of the cover instead of the back to hold your journal... this would eliiminate the elastic issue and may make it fit better. May or may not work but it is worht a try. Take care.

Hi Sam! You converted me…maybe even to Boho colors. I’ve been looking for a Moterm cover for Hobo Weeks but their website is sold out. But I will be prepared for next year since I can’t find any Mega Weeks planners. Having fun with the hunt! Not sure if you know for the Weeks they have added an elastic to pen holder and I saw a couple of other sizes so it may be a new thing. So I am waiting since I want to get a fountain pen. But my shipment of more Sarasa pens are coming. I’m on the hunt for the Uni Ball Signos…enjoying all you reviews and I truly trust your judgment and I am very particular about my paper and pens too. 🤣😂 I hope that Moleskine doesn't listen to your requests since I love how thin the weekly books are 😄 I don't need extra note pages! 😂 and I love that the weekly page has the divider in the weekend (makes it more cute to the eye! ) And ! I love that I can see two months at the same time in the monthly sections!! 🤣😂 Lol!! The only thing I wish they would change is the engraving of the year in the front! 😧 I hate it!! Hahahaa I don't like where they placed it at all!!! It should be a bit lower (in my eyes) haha Or not in the front cover, just on the side so you can see the year when you self it!! 😄 This really buggs me haha--- I really enjoyed this video!!

Why does it have to be so complicated? I just need 1 ringed planner that fits in my bag and is big enough for meeting notes. I have two tabs for work to do and personal todo, a notes section, monthly colander and weekly. That’s it. I went with a personal wide moterm planner. Only 1 no need for more.

Moleskins has been around for 150 years, I doubt they are going to tweak their planner. I love the paper in Moleskine. However, the ghosting to me is worse than the tomoe river paper, maybe from the possible bleeding. A3 is the largest Moleskine, but does not come in the calendar format. As always love your videos and your honesty.

Hi Sam, I love Moleskine too, and they are super easy to find, and often on sale. Moleskine has so many options too, right in front of you, so you don't have to order, you can actually buy them in a store. The paper is so nice as compared to the paper when you print your own inserts. That is the dilemma. But the deal breaker is the fact that the Moleskine is printed. I can't customize too much. I can use Moleskine as a spare or for a project keeper, but for me the rings are the winner cuz you can change the order of the tabs, and the contents as much as you want, thus the leather covers go on and on through the seasons. Not so with the Moleskine, unfortunately, one year only. I'd die to have that Black A6 Moterm and your layout is soooo nice. I'd be proud to have that one. If you had a black and a carmel leather cover to switch between you'd have the seasons covered. It was nice to see your collection. PS I'm not laughing. c

I think I’m just going to use both. I love that rings is customizable and any given thing can be tossed. But these Moleskine books can serve as memory keepers, even if I decide to toss them in 5 years. I don’t have the A6 black Moterm, I have the pocket. And I plan to have black and neutral in all the things just in case I go back to any given system. I think I’ll part with all the rest. I only reach for a black and brown anyway. 😅

I agree with you. We have entirely too many choices now. I know that I was perfectly happy (and more productive) before I knew all these brands and covers existed. I've already changed my planner(s) twice this year lol.
