That's the sad thing with mobile phone gaming, once the devices die, the games are gone forever... I was surprised to see the PC Engine has the bouncing screen effect when the boss hits the ground. Not something you'd expect from the hardware!

SUCCESS has another shmup series called Psyvariar, which I love its soundtracks being mostly "soft energetic". As for gameplay, it's how fast you twirl your ship/mech to reduce chance of being killed.

Very surprised this game did not get a Sega Saturn release considering that Cotton 2 and Cotton Boomerang got released on the system. Considering that this game got a PS1 release, one would think that this would have got a Saturn release at the same time as well. It would also have been a tiny bit more of an improvement on the Saturn as it is the console to own when it comes to 2D gaming. Finally, did you know there is a unofficial ZX Spectrum version called Cotton ZX? kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqTaXnaHi7tgqbs

And a giant heart that explodes into a fountain of blood? WHAT?!?!? I think the creators of this game might have had too much Willo....

Whats the deal with so many franchises ending as slot machines or pachinko games?
@RetroCore9 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Vrba Sad isn't it. Basically greedy "Entertainment" companies buy classic gaming companies when they go bankrupt along with all the IPs. These are then used to bring people to Pachinko. I believe most of this character raping is the result of Korean companies buying the IPs. Koreans do own most of the Pachinko pallors in Japan.

Cotton recently saw an apparence in a game called "Trouble Witches Origin" on PC, there was supposed to be an XBLA realesed but got removed... Oh well... I recommend checking out that game, is like if Cotton was made as a Bullet Hell game, and also the game itself without her is still one of my favorite recently launched STG games EVER. Is the mobile port Java? I do not see any Jar files for it online
@RetroCore9 жыл бұрын
+Kai Attree Yes it's Java and Japanese exlusive. YOu wouldn't beleive how many games I had on that phone which are impossible to find these days. Ever played Street Fighter Zero 2 in Java format? How about a wide screen version of Ridge Racer that blows away the version released in the west? It's a crying shame because there honestly was so many excelent games released only for Japanese phones which are now sadly gone due to the stuipd rule of locking the phone down once the contract is changed. I have two older phones both with a load of great games on them.

I still find it odd that Electronic Arts were behind the X68k port. Their Japanese division(s) released some interesting stuff, including ports of some Eighting/Raizing games also on X68k as well as FM Towns and Saturn/PS1, localized versions of games made by the US/EU divisions (like the Nissan versions of Need for Speed, certain early FIFA games becoming J.League games, the Japanese version of Future Cop LAPD or the PC-98/FM Towns versions of Stunts/4D Driving, which are completely different in looks to the DOS original), Japanese-made installments of the US/EU-made series (such as those Japanese-exclusive Theme Park games/spinoffs, with one of them, Theme Aquarium on PS1, actually making it outside of Japan, albeit a Windows port of it) and originally-developed stuff, such as X-Squad on PS2, and Rabbit on Saturn. A thing to note is that the X68k port had its own tea cup released as promotion for the game, similarly to the more known Panorama Cotton one, and is in fact quite similar in design to the Panorama one, albeit it says "ELECTRONIC ARTS VICTOR INC." below the kanji.
@RetroCore9 жыл бұрын
To be fair, EA had nothing to do with the actual development of any Japanese Game. It was just their way of trying to get in to the Japanese market. Actually the company was known as EA Victor as they had to team up with Victor Japan (JVC).

Japanese phones of the time (before smartphones) had pretty nice D-pads on them. They also used dome switches which gave a satisfactory feel to the controls. It's hard to understand if you've never been exposed to a Japanese phone of the early 2000s. They were years ahead of the stuff western companies were putting out. Then came the smart phone and that was the end of the Japanese phone Kingdom. Even now Japanese smartphones besides the Sony Xperia range are awful.
