I really like the parallax effect on the arcade in the desert stage with the two layers of the rock formations. It looks really good to me. I have a soft spot for Hang On as I had it with the Master System as the pack in. Mine was the cart version with Safari Hunt and not built in(I discovered the built-in Snail Maze game for my system). Hang On was way too hard for me at that young age, especially with how easy it was to explode, but it was fun. The Master System version really could have used some riding music, though. Good battle video as always.

Hang-On in arcade was another groundbreaking game from Sega and this for many reasons: - it began what was called the "Taikan trend" i.e. the use of motion-controlled hydraulic arcade cabinets. - it was one of the first arcade games to use Sega's Super Scaler technology for 3-dimensional sprite scaling. - and it was one of, if not THE first game that introduced digitized drum sounds. It's for this kind of stuff that I love Sega so much =) But sadly the original Hang-On never had a good home port... The SG-1000 port is indeed very compromised but at least it has in-game music unlike a certain... ... Master System port which runs and plays well but no music (especially no Sega music) is a bummer and the fact that our bike crashes when touching opponents is annoying. I see that the MSX port is slightly worse than the SG-1000 port and I noticed this trend for several multiplats on both systems despite having very similar hardwares. And that NEC PC-88 port is awful! But NEC computers often struggle with scrolling and here they managed to add other issues :v Anyway thanx for the video!

I played the crap out of the SMS version as a kid. It was the NA pack in, too, along with Safari Hunt (and Snail Maze in the bios). Today I have fun with the Mark III rom. It's a touch different than the Master System rom as it tells you the name of the different lands as you progress. SG-1000 still shows off the color byte in the road which can do 2 colors for every 8 pixel row, something employed better on later day MSX than on Colecovision. Yeah got the SMS one built in, on cartridge, and also the card too heh. PC88 arcade ports are often weird, if they could have gotten the 640 pixel width to render faster at 320 wide I think the refresh could have been faster.

I'm curious as to why the Master System version didn't have music. The SG-1000 did, and their sound hardware was virtually identical, aside from the fact that the SG-1000 used a real SN76489AN and the Master System used a clone of it integrated into the VDP. Other than that, it's impressive they managed to get it to run so smoothly on the Master System.
@nekononiaow

The answer in these cases is likely either (lack of) budget and/or limited time to market. ;)
@zanegandini5350
@zanegandini5350 6 жыл бұрын
Either that or they didn't want the motorcycle sounds to cut into the music. I have a hard time believing either money or time could be much of a factor, considering it would be super easy to port over the sound from the SG1000 version.
@matttheshadowman2790
@matttheshadowman2790 6 жыл бұрын
My guess? It was originally released on the Sega card first which was somewhat similar to the Hu-Card for the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 and had limited space on there compared to cartidges the SG-1000 used so the music was cut. Though I know it did get a cartidge release later when the Master System 2 came out (at least in Europe) due to that lacking the card reader.
@zanegandini5350
@zanegandini5350 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure that would be the case either, since all the cartridge/card does is provide the soundchip with instructions for music playback, and that doesn't really cost any memory space. It's not like the SNES where the cartridges had to store individual sound samples.
@matttheshadowman2790
@matttheshadowman2790 6 жыл бұрын
@@zanegandini5350 True, and the game has lots of engine sounds from both your own bike and those that pass you. Maybe Sega made the decision to have those over the music, odd either way.

Great video, thanks! I am a bit surprised that the game did not get more ports on 8 bit machines, given that the C64, Atari 8Bit, ZX Spectrum and others were already firmly established in 1985 when it was released. I suppose that the relatively close release of Super Hang On two years later led publishers to acquire that license instead. Not that they did anything good with it unfortunately. ;) The Master System version looks brilliant, it seems even much more fluid and smooth than the Super Hang On on the MegaDrive/Genesis which barely reaches 30 FPS in its best moments (it is not bad, just disappointing technically).

It really was a great idea to give it away with the Master system as a built in game. The sprite size for the riders is great, almost as high as the arcade version(but just a bit smaller)- it has smooth scrolling, and controls like a dream. It really did show off what the SMS is able to do. That NEC PC 8800 port however is rather messy. sprite flicker all over the place, and the sound is just meh. the 8800 was just not built to do stuff like this.

Nope, it really does look like that. I was actually playing in turbo mode too. Playing on a stock PC-88 is much slower.

There is a cheat for the arcade cabinet with the bike that changed the on screen bike into a sheep 🐑. Guy I knew who worked in an arcade centre showed me but I have no idea what button and bike movement sequence sequence he did at the title screen to activate it.

There’s no ASCII characters used in the PC-88 port. That’s just some corrupted display in your emulation.

This morning I saw this posted, opened it in a tab and savored it until now in the afternoon. I was looking forward to this one. Now it's time to play this video and I will enjoy the heck out of it. Without even seeing it, again thank you so much for all your hard work. Never noticed that the letter 'A' on the START is inverted kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2OVZnyHoL6gfLs Very Stylish SG-1000. quite impressed actually with great music. It cen be played on SMS or megadrive with an everdrive No sure which, maybe both. Seems very unfair. SMS no music? wtf Me and my brother got the deluze 3d glasses and light gun pack. Never played Hang-on on the sms I can testify that the DC version is hard as nails. I got just as far as you did! Who knows about the different options sit down or upright?

It's not because it doesn't feature the Arcade graphics. They had to change them because of licensing issues. The billboards have been changed to represent those of Shenmue.

Inspired by your Retro Core Battle of the Ports videos and my own experiences with the abysmally disappointing Amiga ports from the 80s I decided to finally prove that the quality of those ports weren’t really due to the Amiga hardware but just lazy programming. To prove this I wrote a proof of concept based on the Sega Hang-On assets, used either as is if possible, or converted in a reasonable manner when required (16 -> 8 color bikes, roadside objects and horizon). Of course, the proof of concept had to run 50 frames per second (since I’m a PAL Amiga owner) on the Amiga 500. It took quite a bit of work but it indeed turned out to be possible. I have to admit getting the full game to consistently run 50FPS wouldn’t be possible on the A500 because at times there would have to be too many bikes on the screen. I think it would be possible to have the road and the overall gameplay run 50FPS at all times with the bikes and roadside objects dropping to 25FPS which might keep the gameplay fluid enough. However, I didn’t want to pursue it that far. It’s also worth noting that the A1200 would be a great target for this since it would require no reduction in the amount of colors, the CPU and the memory bus would keep up with more objects and it would also have more memory. A proper port of Super Hang-On would also be possible since the technical requirements are pretty much the same. Here’s a video of what I came up with: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJ29dJ1-fNmGodk

The really should have ported this to the 32X. It's too bad Sega killed the 32X early after such an amazing port of Space Harrier. Seeing all the super scaler games on there like Power Drift would have been awesome.
