As an owner of a PS1 copy, Id say its the best out of all next to the GB Version. And yes, the PS1 copy is very hard to find.. It took me 2 years to find a clean version complete with the spine card. Honestly if it wasn't for this game, I would never have known to drive with a clutch. No seriously, long story short a bowling alley had this game and a friend of mines parents were the owners. When the found out about me getting my license but not knowing how to drive with a 5 speed and clutch, they invited me to play this game as much as I wanted on free play. Till this day I still want a sit down cabinet of the original and can do pretty well on the Super Stunt Course.

As a massive fan of the Amiga, I have to admit that the Graphics chip used (whatever version) did not handle 3D well. I know that the CD 32 had hardware accelerated chunky to planer support, which would have helped, at least in the short term, that came too late. Commodore couldn't afford to keep going. ...When I first saw this game in a Nathan's arcade in Westbury, Long Island in New York State, I could not believe how realistic and 3D videogames could be. Granted it was the year 1991, and I couldn't quite get that same feeling of awe again until I first saw Daytona USA sometime in 1994. You read right, not even Virtua Racing the year before could satisfy my mind. The former introduced me to the novel concept of polygonal 3D graphics; the latter introduced the now-ubiquitous concept of high-framerate 3D graphics. Hell. I'm amazed this game even HAS a full length music track; I thought they were mainly jingles...

I have to say, the arcade section footage looks like the alcohol awareness education video ;) "Don't drink and drive!" xD Anyway, jokes aside. I remember the awe, that at the time, was the arcade Hard Driving. Nothing like that was in the existence, at that time! I remember getting it to ST and being kind of disappointed, not so of the framerate (which nowadays look awful too), but mostly the controls... This is one "game", that time has really passed by nowadays. It really has very little "meat" and as the gimmick of graphics has faded, there isn't much to enjoy. Playstation and Saturn versions look nice (though as you say, forget the textured modes) and of course GB-version is nice considering the platform. If SNES-version runs only on it's original CPU, then it's surprise they got it "running" at all! xD Overall I'd say Hard and Race Drivin' are an unenjoyable relics, which time has totally passed by now. For me, there is still some nostalgia for being a kid at the time they came out. But really playing them now is more a way of self torturing :D
@AchtungBaby772 жыл бұрын
It's probably also worth keeping in mind that most (all?) arcade games were designed to take your money, fairness never really came into it. I still enjoy playing retro games for nostalgia value, but Hard and Race Drivin' should've never been ported to any home system since nothing at that time was powerful enough to do 3d polygon graphics.
@BAKU2K26 жыл бұрын
I don't know if it were the same for Race Drivin', but its prequel Hard Drivin' had different variations of the game, an American version, a British version, a European version, and a Japanese version. The American and European versions have you drive on the right side of the road, and the British and Japanese versions have you drive on the left... I think the road signs in the game were also changed to correspond each country/region.

They've cut out so much of the screen real estate with the addition of the massive dashboard and the roof in the SNES version it's barely even rendering a third of the screen, yet it's still struggling with the worst frame rate. Sure, you can point at that Amiga and ST versions aren't great but the Amiga dates back to 1985 as does the ST, the SNES came out in 1990 and renders considerably less in 3D at a considerably lower frame rate. Ah, I can tell you are young enough not to have been gaming when the Mega Drive and SNES were the main consoles. The SNES is awful at polygons. The base SNES can't do much as this game shows. The Game Boy port was the best? Now that's what I call a twist ending!
@RetroCore6 жыл бұрын
I was going with the Saturn but the GameBoy port is rather cool.

Amazing what under-powered systems can do, in the hands of the right developer.

Is there a way to run the arcade version on a pc with some USB wheels and petals?

Yep. Mame allows for wheel and peddle set up.

Yes, the original arcade game.

@@RetroCore Cool! Thanks! Where does one find the software of the game?

Hmm, try Internetarchive.org. Search for MAME. That should point you in the right direction.

The SNES version could use the help of an FX chip.

It sure could.

Mega Drive and Game Boy win because I said so.... Mega Drive is a superior machine over the Super Nintendo (That will annoy Nintendo fans) Just do a compare on MD and SNES games and I bet Mega Drive comes on top.. 9 times out of 10 better resolution and frame rate, plus less restriction on Censorship.. MEGA DRIVE RULES :) Just to make a point I do not hate the SNES, I like it..
@solarflare90785 жыл бұрын
HUB GOBLIN "untrue" So the superior processing, superior databus, superior resolution, superior sprite engine, cleaner sound output, etc all mean the Mega Drive is NOT superior to the SNES? The former-most of the whole list is pretty much the main reason why the Mega Drive version kicks the SNES version's ass. As much as you seem to not want to admit it, it's true. Only things SNES excels in is colors, RAM, and Mode 7, but that's it. The latter-most didn't even age well.

I remember this game on the arcade, did not like it... is like driving on ice lol. But I have never imagine there were ports for this game, especially on the gameboy which looks more playable than the original.

, it is like driving on ice. Real driving is nothing like this game.

Exist a prototype of this game for NES, looks complete, but is a bit choppy and with huge fps problems, but is playable

that was hard drivin', not race drivin'. To be fair though, he didn't cover it on his hard drivin' video either.

it's pretty interesting. It's not actually rendering any polygons, it's kinda like the C64 version, except the road up until a landmark of sorts is done with scanlines, then when you do get a landmark, like a dip in the road, or a jump over a bridge, or through a loop, it basically plays a short animation made to look like it's 3D.
@RetroCore6 жыл бұрын
That does sound interesting. I'd like to see that it action. Time for a KZbin search I think.

I have a problem when comparing ports with the PC. When you compare other systems, it's easy to know the basic specs of the system. When comparing PC what specs are we talking. In this case the video options were mentioned but not the CPU which on a PC of this time was significantly beyond all other options. If emulated are we talking a CPU beyond what would have been available? And if that's true why is that not being done for other systems?
@RetroCore5 жыл бұрын
That's the problem with PCs. In the case of these videos I set the PC to the recommended specs for the game. In this game's case that was a 386DX from what I remember.
@daishi55715 жыл бұрын
@@RetroCore I think for comparisons sake it would be good to add video, CPU and speed for PC. It would give context.

Wait a minute.. how does the truck going about your same speed minus your super fast (for the game) acceleration not flip and explode with you. Also when you said the Playstation port was good unless you play the original stuff...man, you weren't kidding. That looked tedious, almost like the person that designed it thought he was making a new Ridge Racer track. Here is where the player will drift around...oh never mind.

You do realize that when using a modern mouse you are using something that is about 10 to 20 times more sensitive than an amiga or st mouse would be, right?
@RetroCore6 жыл бұрын
yes, if i was using an optical mouse I'd understand but I actually used an old logitec ball mouse for these games. That mouse was from 2000. Still newer than the Amig and ST mouse but similar tech.
@lightdark286 жыл бұрын
The Atari ST had a slightly faster CPU (a whole 1mhz faster 68000), which probably helped it a bit vs the Amiga, as 3D before the era of accelerators needed a capable CPU for all the calculations, same goes the Mega Drive and SNES . its rather hilarious to see the Gameboy pull off a better playing port than an Amiga or a Mega Drive, which just goes to show what you can do with a bit of effort.
@RetroCore6 жыл бұрын
Yep, the Game Boy version is rather impressive for such a tinny hand held.
@lightdark286 жыл бұрын
makes you wonder what Argonaut could have done on the Amiga or ST . I think they did another wireframe 3D game on the Gameboy too , so their skills of getting 3D games running on what was more or less a banana with batteries is impressive.
