SNES Doom is impressive for sure, though according to Randy Linden about 95% of the lifting is done with the SuperFX2. I joke that Doom was ported to the SuperFX2 and used the SNES for playback. As Joe alluded to the 16-bit micros did a lot with 3D. Shout-outs to, Hunter for having a full 3D world with NPCs who remember you and multiple driveable vehicles in 1991, Frontier for being everywhere and a sequel to the beloved Elite, and Zeewolf 2 for probably being the most technically impressive with its patchwork floor.
@inceptional Жыл бұрын
Also according to Randy Linden, by going back and using the SNES' built-in HDMA feature properly, he could basically double the frame-rate now from around 10 fps-15 fps to around 25 fps. And there's talk about doing exactly that.

The Super Fx chip had it's own 256 color framebuffer and the SNES just overlayed it's graphics on top of (or behind in some cases like Yoshi's island) it's own tile layers. The SNES cartridge slot had extra pins for sending pixel data from hardware in the cartridge to the SNES's graphics hardware. So the Super FX functioned sort of like a primitive 32X in reverse.

I love seeing the experimentation in these early efforts. It’s interesting to me that a lot of these games were on the Genesis but the SNES is the console that actually had the games with the chips specifically to do this and kinda became known for this style of 3D thanks to StarFox
@inceptional Жыл бұрын
It's because it takes great games to actually get more than a passing glance from the vast majority of people or just to matter in the grand scheme of things, and the first polygonal game on either of these consoles to truly blow people away in every way was Star Fox. So, by doing it right first, SNES and Nintendo earned the credit and recognition it got basically (same applies to how it did rendered cgi visuals right first with Donkey Kong Country, and it go the credit and recognition there too). But, hey, the Genesis eventually got Virtua Racing, and people still remember that game on it. It even came to the Genesis Mini 2 as well.
