I remember first seeing Street Fighter 2 back in 1991- we had school sport once a week where we could choose what we wanted to do for sport and the not too far away AMF Bowling Alley (with lots of arcade games) was what some of my friends and I chose (we were in Year 9 in High School). My mate and I decided to play against each other- I used Blanka and he used Ken- and as we didn't know the moves, we just winged it. I quickly figured out Blanka's electricity attack and actually managed to win. And because the game was new and nobody had seen anything like it (we knew of the first game but hardly paid it any attention) we actually had an audience! Then my mate kept playing it at every opportunity and Ryu was the character he used the most and he got REALLY GOOD, while I kept checking out other games and was only a SF2 casual (still played it a lot, just not enough to master it like my friend did). The next time I beat him was at his place playing Championship Edition on his Megadrive NEARLY TWO YEARS LATER. He was legendary at Street Fighter 2. Though not my favourite game, I still had a blast the many times I played it and recognize it's greatness. It truly is a benchmark in gaming history. Great video

Genesis port was better than the SNES port. Idk why so many people believe the SNES port was better. The Genesis port has superior controls (6 button controller layout is similar to arcade layout), sound and music is closer to the arcade (it uses the same sound chip), max speed settings without inputting a code, speed settings in Championship mode (with a code), a code disabling special moves, an exclusive Group Battle mode, arcade intro (with the black dude getting replaced by another white dude), and the uncensored victory screens. The only things the SNES port have over it are the visuals having more color (although it looks a bit washed out) and the sound being clearer (but it's muffed). The sprites are roughly the same and some of the stages look better on the Genesis port such as Ryu and Guile's stage.

I read an interview with one of the guys who worked in the SMS version, he said they had a very tight deadline to port the game after Capcom gave them the green light. They first wanted to make sure the game worked on the Master System properly, and then they would finetune the gameplay... but their time was up and they couldn't do all the adjustments to make the gameplay better as they wanted. This still is one of the most amazing achievements of Brazilian game development (also with Duke Nukem 3D on Mega-Drive). Just the fact that a giant japanese company actually licensed their biggest franchise to a brazilian team was amazing for us. Though of course, while we were amazed by that, we were also forgetting Capcom also licensed their games to US Gold... which means Capcom basically didn't give a damn :D
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 7 жыл бұрын
Hahaha, the whole US Gold licensing it pure proof that they didn't give a damm. Still, I do think that had that Master System port on Friday Street Fighter been given more time it could have been pretty good.

Played both SNES and Genesis ports of Street Fighter II games i still think they are good to this day. Great thing about modders is they have fixed some slight audio issues in a few of the games with slightly muffled audio. I believe the Nintendo censorship has been fixed put back to original arcade back ground characters. These days you can play the arcade versions on Switch on Street Fighter 30th Anniversary collection. Excellent video!

Yeah, some homebrew devs have gotten past the muffling issue due to gaussian interpolation on the Snes sound chip using properly preedited samples and some trickery. Some devs back in the day could even bypass the 64kb sample limit somewhat by loading in new samples and offloading old ones on the fly! Sf2 could be remade for the snes utilising all of this. Would be amazing. Was never a fan of Sf2 instruments on snes either. So tinny..... Luckily SSF2 stepped it up

The MS DOS version looked great until you actually see it running. Can you imagine all them years ago, going to the shop, seeing street fighter 2 on PC, picking up the box and looking at the pictures. Then you finally get home and install it. In your head you think your gonna practice and bust up all your friends on Arcade and SNES. yeah right...... fast forward a few more weeks and your back at the same shop buying a new 16bit console and street fighter again. You then proceed to burn the MS DOS SF2 box and over write the floppy disk with common disk utility's and word documents.

PC DOS version actually got several unofficial ports, with a bit smaller sprite than the official port, but the game actually plays quite close to it's arcade counterpart. Ofc being unofficial port, it's also missing cutscenes and some other things, but being very playable version is actually a huge deal. Even as a joke, there's also a version which includes Terry & Andy bogard from Fatal Fury series in the roster. lol All those version fits into old 1 floppy disk. Wish I backed up those, but I left those at my old house, plus don't think i have working floppy drive to back them up anyways.

Yep. And in my opinion it’s better than the Genesis version. I wonder why Street Fighter II wasn’t released on TurboGrafx-16 (maybe call it Fighting Street II, makes it sound like Sesame Street, just slap Big Bird’s head on Ryu) in America. I still question the lack of existence of Mortal Kombat I and II for PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16. MKII would’ve been an TurboGrafx Arcade CD-Rom title. I guess NEC didn’t want to get their hands bloodied up (get it? you probably don’t, neither do I)/port a bloody game where you annihilate your foe at the end of the match.

Agreed. Unfortunately US Gold seemed to get all the Capcom and Sega conversions which looked great in magazine screenshots but awful when they started moving. Although some of the blame lies with the magazines of the time especially for Amiga and ST as they were always pushing for bigger sprites. Street Fighter 2 was the revelation back in 1991 and revitalised the fighting game genre and in my opinion the MD, SNES, PC engine and Saturn versions are the only versions you really need. And spirit thought for Amiga owners who really got shafted with their port but then Amiga owners usually got shafted with their ports with anything published by US gold.

The PCE was such a technical marvel - shame the larger cost of the bigger HuCards resulted in a few smaller HuCard pce arcade ports missing a level or two (like the bonus stages in Shinobi). The larger card format was better than some SuperCDRom2 titles imo - and the Arcade System Card showed what could be done when the Larger HuCard memory was paired with CDRom technology, with great versions of Fatal Fury 2 etc.

@B3ro1080 300 DM in 1992/1993 were still a lot of money. If you count the historical inflation that would be today 260 €. The Street Fighter II Bundle Pack had Street Fighter II instead of Super Mario World and only one controller.

Sharp X68000 gets my vote. It looks like the JAMMA game. No messing-around with the score display like in other ports. For some reason, Capcom made an effort to make sure the X68000 version looked identical to the arcade game but didn't with the other ports of SF for various consoles. It's always annoyed me that Capcom did that. I think it was a conspiracy to make sure the arcade game was always a bit better than any port.

Gamers often refer to Fighter's History as the #1 direct copy without realizing others like Super Fighter and Best of Best being much much worst. Even worse, gamers hear the court case and blame Fighter's History Dynamite as the only game in the series they first glance at. There are 3 actually. Sadly, gamers didn't know that there was a Data East VS. Epyx court case over Karate Champ and International Karate. Gamers who say Karate Champ is BS, they are pointing at the FDS/NES port, which was reprogrammed by Data East USA who also almost developed and released Tattoo Assassins. Capcom USA was also the developer of the Japan-only Final Fight Revenge arcade and Saturn game. As for portability and 8-bit, Joy Mech Fight flows better while Takara did well with porting Neo-Geo games to Game Boy. Even Gekitou! Power Modeler (or Power Quest) did better.

I did barely saw Street Fighter II arcade cabinet a couple of times, but never could play it due to way too little time to play it. Fighting games nowadays by contemporary developers are developed by Exact, TypeMoon, and Arc System Works. There are also 5pb (with a few others) and Studio Saizensen.

Man the Mega Drive version blows the PC Engine one out of the water ;) The Mega Drive port has much more content (the arcade intro (which is uncensored in the japanese release), more game modes, a third bonus stage, etc.), better presentation (fullscreen), parallax scrollings, great FM tunes and better gameplay (it has the CPS-1 combos unlike PCE). On PC Engine the lack of parallax scrollings makes the visual just flat, especially bad about some stages such as Ken or Honda. Also this port has rather weak music. On the other hand some backgrounds look better than on Mega Drive. Overall the PC Engine port is good but the Mega Drive one is better by a huge margin. Then between the Mega Drive port and Hyper Fighting on SNES, here it's a closer match but the Mega Drive version wins mainly thanks to better gameplay (which is smoother and has the CPS-1 combos unlike SNES). Also the Mega Drive 6 button pad is undeniably the best fighting pad of its time and one of the best ever!

The biggest issue with the Mega Drive Street Fighter games is the speech. No matter how you look at it the speech quality is bloody awful. BUT, some clever people have reprogrammed the MD Street Fighter 2 Championship edition with much improved speech and there's even much better BGM tracks and colour pallet! - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nouyo6OAhZx3i9k Super Street Fighter on the MD needs some serious work on the music though. It's bad, very bad for the most part.

+Retro Core The speech is not that bad, it's quite scratchy but on SNES it's muffled. The PC Engine version has clearer voices but they sound thin and speeded-up. About Super Street Fighter II both Mega Drive and SNES versions have kinda "weird", rather bad music indeed. I know about steff's new sound driver as well as some of Pyron's colors hacks but, even if I like to see all this enthusiasm and I find some of the results interesting, I prefer games as they originally are. I'm rather into new coming Mega Drive games such as Project Y or Antarex.

Night Driver Nah, the voices are lousy, even on a Model 1. HADoOoOoOOoken! C'mon! The difference is like night and day with that revised sound driver. As far as I could tell, the PCE port is also lacking the "Hyper Fighting" version of the game that both the Mega Drive and SNES versions got. Two sets of arcade rules (mid-air hurricane kicks, standing flash kicks, Chun Li's fireball, and so on) and more depth to go with it. edit: I normally agree with you that I prefer to enjoy games the way they were made, but the Z80 driver patch for the Mega Drive version is outstanding. It makes all the difference and IMO makes the Mega Drive version a clear favorite over all the ports on its contemporaries. Best controller, best sound, and great arcade gameplay.

The PC Engine version is Great, especially with the 6 button controller, and has sprites closer in size to the arcade vs the MD / SNES, but we spent the most time playing the SNES because of the arcade sticks...

The black guy in the intro sequence was changed most likely due to racism concerns, as having a black guy being knocked out by a Caucasian would be seen as a hate crime. Oh yes! Street Fighter II is truly an undeniable timeless classic and impact for fighting game genre and Capcom's golden goose. Street Fighter II: Turbo is my personal favorite out of all of the SNES ports and I'm so glad to own it. The only problem I have with its music is the annoying lead instruments used for Ken's theme, otherwise it's tolerable and pretty enjoyable. I do admit Street Fighter II: Special Championship Edition has better music and more Turbo speed, thanks to blast processing, but both of the ports are worth owning. PC Engine port is great for the system. Different than other PC Engine ports of Capcom games, it was actually developed by Capcom themselves but still published by NEC. I don't care which 16-bit console ports is the best or are they even arcade perfect. They're all true Street Fighter II games compared to laughably bad at best but total garbage known as the ports by U.S. Gold.

The Atari ST was never going to be the machine to pull this off. Graphics looked nice in static shots, but lost detail unless you were playing on a colour monitor. And when you can only put 16 colours on screen from 512... Sound fx ended up breaking up the music. The ST hardware was never designed to move big sprites across a horizontally scrolling background The game jerked around all over the shop. Add in disk swapping and it's a disaster all round.

Also with bootleg rom chips for street fighter 2 added new gameplay features. In 1992 capcom released street fighter 2 turbo: hyper fighting with the hyper fighting version which introduced a faster playing speed and new special moves for certain characters, as well as further refinement to the character balance.

The good old debate between the Mega Drive version vs the PCE. If we're talking from a pure technical stand point, both have their pro and cons. For the PCE: better colors, better voices. For the MD: better musics, more detailed backgrounds with parallaxes. And they play equally well. So it really comes down to personal preferences. But overall I think the MD version is the better of the two for one very simple reason: the PCE version only inclues Street Fighter 2' while the MD also has Turbo on the same cartridge. And I think it matters way more than the slim edges each version has on each other in graphics, musics and sounds.

Me and my friends have a figure of speech: "Worst than SF2 for the Amiga". And sometimes we also say that "Amiga port of SF2 was made in two weeks by a lonely programmer locked in a cellar". The worst part is, that's probably true since US Gold tried to monetize every conversion as much as they could, following the motto "minimum cost, maximum yield" (I translated this from italian, hope it's correct)

A bit of insight into Amiga port, because while it is definitely low on list of ports, it was actually quite successful as a game on its own. The reason was simple - it was made for european markets and there were countries like Poland where there was no SNES (most of the people at the time didn't even knew such a console existed) and nobody even saw the Arcade version so nobody knew better. While the MegaDrive existed, the game was released a year later - we already had Mortal Kombat and MK2 in the arcades by that time as well as Body Blows and Body Blows Galactic on Amiga (I'm a bit confused because I was sure Amiga had MK port in that year as well, but Wiki mentions 1994). So by the time "the superior" port was available, the game wasn't relevant anymore. The MK would dominate until SNK's Samurai Showdown and Aggressors of Dark Kombat showed up in the arcades and soon there was the 3D era with Virtua Fighter 2 and Tekken (well, and Toshiden...).

I don’t think it’s been said before but this needs to be said and the internet needs to hear it: J-FIGHTERS FOR THE GODDAMN WIN BABY!!!!! Man that felt good to say. I freaking love Japanese made fighting games, especially in this day and age. There really needs to be a term for Japanese fighting games and I seem to have invented it. It’s called “J-Fighter”. The term means Japanese fighting game, just like with JRPG, Japan often produces the best role-playing games and fighting games. JAPANESE (ESPECIALLY THE JAPAN-ONLY ONES) FIGHTING GAMES RULE AND OFTEN SLAUGHTER THE WESTERN MADE ONES (some exceptions do apply but in this day and age there’s no such thing as a terrible fighter because the genre’s been refined and these games are practically perfect especially from Japan) BECAUSE JAPAN IS OFTEN CONSIDERED THE KING OF QUALITY ENTERTAINMENT!!!!! Oh man that felt good to say. I’m sure you’ll agree with me.

That’s not the only thing the 360 d pad was bad for. It also couldn’t handle switching through Dante’s styles in DMC4. Though in regards to this list I do prefer the PS2 ports for SFII as long as I’m playing against a friend. The Capcom Classics Collection ports were insanely difficult in arcade mode, and I even put them on easiest. Those are even more difficult than Hyper Street Fighter II on Anniversary Collection in my opinion

Great video. SF II is one of those 2D games that really shows off the highs and lows of each system since it is so demanding, including the controls. It's a shame that the 32X wasn't blessed with a port like MK II was. Imagine a 32X CD version with music and multiple modes like the Saturn one. SF II for the SNES is still one of my favorite ports of all time. The turbo edition was the pinnacle for me, though I still bought SSFII the next year, and was bummed about Turbo being released for the ultra-expensive 3DO. The C64 version reminds me of Samurai Shodown when you're far away, and the ZX version reminds me of the zoomed view when you're close to each other. I also wonder how the SuperGrafx would have handled SFII with the extra power it had over the PC Engine.

The Master System version is not worse than the NES version. Considering the constraints of the system, it is probably the best game the Master system has. It is a faithful rendition of the game. You can't compare 8bits to 16bits versions of the game. You have to compare it to the games in a system libraries to see if they did the best they could. Commodore version of the game is unplayable.

My first Street Fighter 2 was a NES pirate port called Master Fighter 2. It had only 5 characters (Ryu, Chun Li, Guile, Zangief, Bison) and one ending (Chin Li's) for all characters. It was...rather playable and the music was nice. Decade later I've played SF2 port on SNES. Back then, I thought the game was not very good. It was clunky and stiff. Few more years later, I finally was able to play SF2 on arcade and appreciate finesse of this game. PC Engine version looks very nice. Unexpectedly so. Sharp version as well. IBM PC - is a horrible port, it seems. Both of them. Amiga version, strangely enough, looks very bad. Commodore 64 port looks like Yie-Ar-Kung Fu. And Spectrum version, suddenly has very detailed sprites, but, unsurprisingly, atrocious framerate.

Interestingly enough, the X360 port is actually based off of the PS1/Saturn version from the Capcom Generations 5 disc (aka Street Fighter Collection 2), judging by the 1998 copyright and the loading screens. It's the same case with Capcom Classics Collection (PS2/Xbox) and Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded (PSP), the latter pretty much being a PSP port of the five Capcom Generations discs plus a few more games (King of Dragons, Knights of the Round and Eco Fighters) and extras. Also a slot machine to unlock said extras, which was all kinds of bullshit. The company behind this port, Sensory Sweep, also did two Capcom collections: Capcom Classics Mini-Mix for the GBA (had emulations of Bionic Commando, Strider and Mighty Final Fight) and Capcom Puzzle World for the PSP (had ports of Super Puzzle Fighter II -was apparently based on the Dreamcast version-, the Buster Bros./Pang! collection, and an emulation of Block Block). Those two as well as CCC Reloaded were the only Capcom compilations of that time not by Digital Eclipse as it had been at that point (Reloaded was by Capcom themselves)

I actually got fairly good at doing the special moves in the Amiga version. I admit that the game didn't look as good as the arcade and it moved fairly slowly, but at the time I considered it playable. Of course I hadn't played the arcade, only seen it, so I really didn't have too many expectations when I got the Amiga version. Oh, and a joystick being better than a D-pad for playing games? You know that's considered blasphemy by most gamers, right? I mean just look at all the people who rush to connect Sega gamepads to their C64, Atari 2600 and other classic systems. Personally, I think D-pads suck, but the gaming world seems to love them.
