🚩 Play Bellwright now: rebrand.ly/historymarche 🚩 Due to popular request we are heading back to Ireland with the Battle of the Yellow Ford. Fought on 14 August 1598 during the Nine Years' War in Ireland, a Gaelic Irish army under Hugh O'Neill of Tyrone met the English crown expeditionary force under the command of Henry Bagenal, marshal of Ulster. The battle greatly escalated the war. English Crown poured more men and materiel into the conflict, while more Irish lords joined O'Neill's alliance. The Nine Years' War in Ireland, previously fought mostly in Ulster, would soon become a struggle against English control over Ireland as a whole.

Irish archaeologist and historian from Tyrone here. Great video, the Battle of the Yellow Ford is known as Hugh O’Neill's greatest victory. Just a few pointers for the period. The Gaelic (not gallic) leaders were known as lords rather than (chieftains) which has come to the attention of modern Irish historians as a possible derogatory term used by the English against foreign peoples. Also, it is debated whether the Nine Years War can be called a (rebellion) of the Irish in the first place, as the English crown had never militarily controlled Tir Eoghain and the other Gaelic lordships in Ulster until after the defeat of Hugh O’Neill and the Flight of the Earls in 1607. Keep up the great work! One of the best history channels on KZbin.

Great stuff. And excellent point about the Gallowglass. O'Neill modernized to the extent that the English had to copy him to stay in contention. But if he had've kept the Gallowglass quite a few of his victories would have been total annihilations. Look what the Gallowglass did at Curlew Pass for example. Also, for anyone interested in the wider context and details of the Nine Years War, James O'Neill has a great lecture on KZbin.

Missed out on "plashing" .. the Irish used the trees to create fortifications. They would bend tall trees down and then weave the branches together thereby creating formidable natural barriers .. I believe (though can not prove) the Irish kept open certain passages through these obstacles. This would have allowed the Irish to rapidly redeploy whilst ensuring any pursuing English troops would become hopelessly lost trying to follow the Irish through the undergrowth

That kind of natural fortifications were also prevelent in Germany but were more of a permanent structure in places used up to early 1800s. They were called "Landwehr" (not to confuse with the militia type units of the same name for territorial defense)and was used for border defence between the german states and principalities but also to create safe places for the population in case of an attack. The openings on the main roads functioned also as toll collection stations.

Great example of a defending force using the terrain to defeat an invading enemy. Percy rushing forward when the rest of his column was strung out sealed the deal. Hi History Marche.... Great tale of the battle and well presented. I know sourcing exact numbers for this time period are really hard, but the casualties for both sides doesn't seem to be in anyway accurate. 2/3s of the English Army wasn't fully engaged and the front division actually [stupidly] counterattacked which doesn't suggest a massacre. The Irish would have been very slow to cross the yellow trench and chase the English down. The English have a decent amount of firepower and fought 'close-in' with the Irish [who didn't have a large number of close combat troops] for a long time before being pushed back. I'd suggest lower English and higher Irish deaths... but I'm only guessing.
@jamesoneill7773
@jamesoneill7773 3 ай бұрын
All sections of the English army were engaged, just Percy's destroyed on the other side of the trench. Bagenal's and Cosby's regiments were badly mauled in utile counterattack. English claimed just 800 of 4k killed, but only around 2k returned from Armagh. Including 300 who defected to Tyrone, we're still looking at 1.5k killed. There only ever were guesstimates on Tyrone's losses. Irish deployed much greater numbers of shot than the English

Global perspective . . . in old Nihon, an aging Toyatomi Hideoshi, second of the great unifiers, had sent his most fractious generals off to garner glorias mundi in Korea. Once on the ground, these doughty warriors had acted like spoiled children, refusing to cooperate with one another under fears of others "stealing the glory for themselves". Facing large incursion by Chinese forces; and, worse, failing to adequately protect a logistical train stretching across a short suido well populated with Korean "pirates", Toyatomi's forces will soon be faced with paucity of supply- especially gunpowder. Presently, they will be forced to withdraw. The age of the Third Great Unifier- Tokugawa Ieyasu, is about to begin. Back to you.

I don't and don't support Israel either. Palestinians literally done the same thing to Lebanese Christians after they took them in as refugees when Israel displaced them. First thing they done was conspire with Muslim minority to overthrow them. They couldn't even let go of their fundamentalism in the face of kindness and compassion. They only started supporting them because Sinn Fein had an association with PLO in the 70s onward
