Sure, the game isn't that deep, but each class had a very specific role to play, considering the lack of customization for troops. I was SUPREMELY dissapointed we didn't get to play as a member of Rommel's unit, or any German unit for that matter. It would have been perfect, because you could show the other side without the icky connotations associated with the Axis of WWII. I kinda get why most ww2 games didnt get an axis campaign (despite the red army really not being much more humane and they got included in single player. But a ww1 campaign should try to show the war from both sides. Such a scenario screams for joining the German storm/shock troopers or fly with the Richthofen squadron.

Actually i don't understand at all why ww2 games don't have axis campaigns. Your missing out on a ton of story material. Such as these two senarios. 1. Your a german ordered to massacre civilians in russia against a wall, which is the intro to the seige of Leningrad or something. Your character gets shell shock, and has flashbacks from doing the past horrible deeds you commit throughout this mission, and future missions. This could be amazing for a sad, and brutal reality story. 2. Your a japanese soldier in nanking during....duh. You watch tanks roll over tied up civilians/prisoners, women being forced upon by soldiers, and worst of all you are ordered to participate in the slaughter. This mission could also switch between a lone Chinese rifleman fighting against the japanese unit. Not many attrocities during ww2 get that much screentime, and it's a shame really. It's gold for a story about how bad war can get.

Bad Comp 2 is the benchmark for this series, IMO. It was so much fun playing a BF game where buildings were actually destructible. Enemy team camping in a building? No problem - no more building... I used to laugh my ass off looking back at the map and seeing not a single erect building.

Just a nitpick at your nitpicking the underrepresentation of trench warfare: Most fronts other than the Western front actually saw mostly dynamic warfare. And even the Western front was quite mobile at the start and end (Kaiserschlacht) of the war. I truly recommend an awesome channel called The Great War for best WW1 info on KZbin.

The majority of WW1 was spent in the trenches, waiting for the chance to charge only to get mowed down by machine guns or shells. The reason late WW1 was so fast is because the influx of fresh american soldiers tipped the scale. It was nowhere near as fast as this game depicts.

Actually a lot of African units serve in WW1: Harlem Hellfighters, 371st Infantry Regiment, 372nd Infantry Regiment, 366th Infantry Regiment, Senegalese Tirailleurs are all black units during the time.

To be fair, no game can every do justice to the realities of war. Other mediums are better suited for telling the stories. Even films fail: Saving Private Ryan, to a great extent, glamorizes WW2 in ways that you wouldn't expect. It dehumanizes Nazis as "hurr durr evil guys" rather than show that they were humans fighting against others *they* saw as evil. I'd go with written word of novels for being able to explain the intricacies and horrors of such events. At the end of the day, Battlefield 1 is just another game in a long line of games, that at best, uses historical events as setting for selling/telling a *fictional* story.

Sal X There's a lot about Origin legitimately spying on you and really taking a deep look into your computer that Steam doesn't do. At least when it started. Its also about EA just being a piece of shit you never want to get near I guess? Either way some people just don't like a thing and refuse to get near it even if it is harmless. EA has some especially negative connotations with, for example, all the dev companies they have deliberately bought and killed off. So even if the Origin platform is 1:1 with Steam there's still some kind of feeling of a line being crossed to give in and use Origin to some people and you're just gonna have to learn to respect that. I feel like both of the things I wrote are essentially two posts saying the same thing, but whatever.

My biggest issue with the single player is that it's literally the same fucking thing for every campaign except the flying one. Case and point: Black Guy campaign: Actually, I can't complain about this one. It was really good at portraying WW1's trench combat, short as fuck life expectancy, and general hellishness. It should've been longer. Or made into the only campaign. Tank campaign: Role around in a tank down an extremely linear corridor for exactly one level before being "cut off" for no reason even though your infantry and other tanks were with you up until 5 seconds ago and you were pushing deeper into German lines than the repairman pushes into the lady of the house in every porno ever. Then you get to sneak around for the next two levels while the FUCKING TANK is sitting right next to you, locked away as a set piece while you stealth it up through hilariously under-defended German checkpoints and towns. Then get back into the tank for one final level where you destroy more A7Vs than the Germans ever fucking BUILT in the span of one battle. Oh, and a bunch of FT-17s because "lol everyone's gotta have the same tanks hur dur!" Plane campaign: Shoot down Baron Von Richthofen's entire Flying Circus in the first mission, use your unlimited rockets to provide more ground support than the entirety of both airforces did over the entire war, then crash and get to stealth your way through enemy lines once again, then make a heroic charge through trenches in one of the few truly epic moments of the game, saving your badly wounded gunner in the process. Then get arrested, taken to London where SUDDENLY THE FLYING CIRCUS IS BACK AND THIS TIME WE BROUGHT 3 ZEPPELINS AND A BUNCH OF CAPTURED BRITISH BOMBERS PAINTED WITH BAD GUY PAINT BECAUSE FUCK MAKING SEPARATE MODELS! and proceed to somehow take off from exactly 2 feet of launch deck on a battleship too shoot down the entire German airforce with your fighter plane. Then you fall to your death, somehow survive a thousand or so foot drop into the fucking water, and then go all "Well, that's just my story hur dur charactur". Italy campaign: Become a living tank by suiting up in fucking medieval knight armor which was proven to be horribly ineffective at stopping bullets, wipe out a small army on your own by throwing an HMG around like a fucking Nerf gun, then shoot down the half of the German airforce that Plane campaign guy didn't with one fucking AA gun, then survive being bombed. Then TAKE OFF YOUR GODLIKE ARMOR IN ORDER TO MAKE ASSAULTING AN ENEMY FORTRESS THROUGH WAVES OF NEAR-IMMORTAL FLAMETHROWERS THAT CAN SHOVE OFF ANYTHING SHORT OF A TACTICAL NUKE. Then watch as your god made mortal attempts human emotion. Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi campaign: "Gallipoli! Left their letters in the sand. Such waste of life, Gallipoli! Dreams of freedom turned to dust!" Except lol it's more sneaking through enemy territory that's actually your own territory and what lol explaining why there's an entire Turkish army between your command post and your front line? Why would we do that, oh look now we're mortaring our own men lol aren't those Brits just terrible at communication? Now assault another fortress on your own that's full of like 10 people because reasons! Lawrence of Arabia Except You Don't Play As The Actually Interesting Character campaign: Sneaking for the Sneak God! Stealth for the Stealth Throne! Play as a woman because we needed to fill our gender diversity quota to ensure EA got to keep its federal funding and now you get to DO YET MORE SNEAKING and if this campaign actually changed at any point I don't know because at this point I was so fucking bored of playing Assassins Creed: The Great War that I quit.

Now in 2020, the "Operations" multiplayer is as dead as Tutankhamen, while the CoD-like YOLO "run around spray and pray, or quick scope with sniper rifles" element of online multiplayer is still alive.
