Yeah, I think this is the first video I've seen by Oliver after watching DF for about a year and I'm a little disappointed. Not terrible by any means, but seems to lack depth and I think he was a little too kind compared to his colleagues about the flaws. DF has always held a high bar when it comes to frame rates and frame pacing in particular but Oliver has taken much softer position on it which I'm not a fan of personally.

This has been addressed by an Xbox update, so no more shutdowns should be experienced. The game still occasionally crashes though. 🤷‍♂️

Its a total pain the ass. Mine usually crashes on the map with all the shipping containers and actually shut off my series X although only once in quite a few hours of playing. The slowdown and freezing is probably the bug i see the most and usually ends in either a crash to dash or me just being killed while standing still waiting for the game to unfreeze.

It's weird that all these analysis channels used to compare ALL THREE versions AT THE SAME TIME to see the actual moment to moment performance differences between all systems (when Xbox Series X was winning most comparisons). But more and more, analysis guys are separating the versions making it difficult to get a real read on which system is performing best or worst in the same sections. Anyone else notice this?

Not defending this game, but I didn't see anywhere in the video where the frame rate dips to 20 FPS. The lowest it got in the video I saw was 46 FPS for a moment, but as he said the worst it gets is typically in the low 50s. The graph values don't mean it necessarily gets that low. For other games they have the graph go all the way down to 0 in the graph, but obviously the game doesn't actually dip to 0 FPS.

They have 64 player versions of all the maps. There are dozens of servers on the Portal server browser, running Conquest 64 on all 13 maps :)

You can play the 64 player versions of these maps on next gen and PC via Portal...the maps are part of the Conquest Small preset. Even conquest Large can be tailored to have 64, 80 or 128 players per map (You can set the number yourself) in Portal. Its all easily accessible from either the server browser, or player customizable from the portal homepage.

I think they should put them in standard match making. Have a 32v32 conquest matchmaking options. Sometimes it's hard to get Portal games going, getting guys to join on servers where your ping isn't going to be over 200 can be challenging.

This "tech review" doesn't address a lot of things that Digital foundry usually looks at. No mention of badly or non existent bf destruction, large open EMPTY spaces, major bugs etc. The game doesn't deserve much attention we know but at least point out the flaws and don't call everything "justified" just because 128 players.

In Bad Company 2's case you can basically level the entire map. Good try though, it's OK to criticise things you love in an effort to see them improve.

I tried to give the new guy a fair shot, but after watching a few videos, I conclude that his videos just don't feel like Digital Foundry videos. Look at the GTA definitive videos for example. The GTA 3 video was amazingly done as you would typically expect from John, but the video for Vice City and San Andreas felt like it was done in haste and didn't even cover Xbox One/PS4 versions that was covered in the GTA 3 video. GTA 3 video was amazingly well done which was really easy to follow and was insightful. The 2nd VC+SA video felt all over the place just like this one and honestly felt more like a IGN video than Digital Foundry at that point. I understand that digital foundry needs to expand, but I hope they do it in a way that does not hurt the quality of their videos.

I’m sorry to say this but the performnce analysis here is very removed from my experience. On Series X I’ve encountered frequent occurencies of framerate dropping in the single digits, or even freezingventirely for a couple sceonds (not ms). Most common offenders are the maps « Discarded » (especially on top of the tanker) and « Manifest ». You should try and have a go at those two on a 128 players servers of Conquest/Breakthrough

Its not DF job to comment about the state of the game, beyond the tech stuff. Their compliments were merely things that DICE deserve to be complimented on, despite the vast amount of things they shouldnt be complimented on that have nothing to do with a tech review. Dice should have considered adding a 64 player game mode which randomizes map layouts by decreasing its size, so that if we have a map with 5 zones, we get to play combinations of diifferent 4 zones each time for example, I think that would add a lot to the replayability and performance

I'm all for giving the new guy a chance but so many issues were ignored, minimized or justified. This video seems to have zero desire to hold DICE responsible for selling this game to people in this state. Nobody should have to download the last-gen version to get playable framerates on their current-gen console. This video lacked the depth of analysis that I have come to expect from DF. It should have been at least twice as long as it is, if it was really going to go into the technical state of the game and analyze why many of these issues were occurring in the first place. DF has a very important role in gaming, when DF highlights a games issues the devs take notice. This one video could have done more than thousands of customer complaints. I get this guy is new but I have to assume Richard or someone else on the team signed off on this video before it was allowed to be uploaded and I really don't think it should have been. This doesn't meet the standard of quality set by the rest of the DF team. And calling this game, one of the top 10 worst rated games of all-time on Steam a "qualifed success" is absolutely laughable.

According to VG Tech, "very large frame time spikes were found on Xbox Series X. These frame time spikes weren't found on PS5 or Xbox Series S." VG Tech was much more accurate than Digital Foundry in this case. DF knows that the Series X has been having those longer stream freezes since launch in other games.

I do think it should be conveyed that, whilst it's fair to suggest playing previous gen versions to achieve slightly improved FPS etc., it's utterly unacceptable for a game release to make people even consider doing that, especially in this case where there are other core gameplay compromises. I understand the reason for mentioning it... it's technically something you CAN do if you're desperate for extra frames, but the reality is it shouldn't have to be a suggestion at all - optimisation should be better, especially for AAA releases. I don't know. I still think the PS5 version of 2042 looks quite a bit better than the ps4 version of BFV. But BFV on a high end PC with raytracing looks completely unreal. I thought the game didn't really look all that impressive on PS4 aside from some effects like the way the snow particles interacted with the environment. Even killing people in the snow and the snow would kick up was pretty neat. Snow would even accumulate on your weapons in BFV, even blood. This isn't something you see in 2042. Overall 2042 does look better though. Trees and foliage have improved significantly, draw distance and obviously resolution are much improved. Same with the explosions looking pretty deadly with SO much more stuff going on at once. Sure, concessions had to be made given how much bigger the game is now but to say it flat out looks worse than last gen BFV, nah, I don't think so. I even think BF1 looked better visually over BFV

Lmao reducing the player count from 128 to 64, massively downgrading the graphics aswell as getting smaller maps is HUGE price to pay for a 60fps lock. Idk why you're making it seem like it isn't. Anyways you can find the solution for that in the Portal mode instead of going through all of that hassle. Also you guys didn't mention the highest resolution on the Series S, which I assume would be 1440p? This tech breakdown just doesn't feel as indepth as the usual Digital Foundry video. Yeah they phoned this one in a bit, giving it to the new guy. There's a lot to cover here, and they kinda skimmed over it, and it looks like they used footage captured by other people too, probably patrons. (Which is fine, I'm sure they're extremely busy and not that enthused about Battlefield.) Because I'm dumb and didn't learn from the beta. I've always preordered every single BF game and never regretted it, sure I had concerns on some but overall experience was great and each provided hundreds of awesome gaming hours. I went all in with open mind into the beta and couldn't believe what they've done with this one especially on the specialists system and taking so many backwards steps in so many aspects but I said I need to give it another chance and I was dumb again. Many of the errors in this game existed in previous games - and really never got fixed, so I don't anticipate much being done to fix this one either. I think they are in serious danger of ending up preaching to the choir and not actually getting as many new players in as they might like as anyone who buys one of these "large marketing budget FPS" should realise they put more attention on promoting it than they did making it. In other words they are an example of the hollywoodisation of the videogame business models. In all honesty I can't think of a single reason to even play this even if it was free to play.

On PC I had to manually edit the configuration file to reduce the quality of shadows. That was a massive improvement in performance. I literally went from 20 frames per second with an RTX 3090, to 60+ I was also then able to unlock the ability to use dynamic resolutions. For some bizarre bug, I was unable to do it from the UI itself.

The options to enable DLSS or control the frame rate were grayed out for me. Like I said above, I had to edit the configuration file, which then allowed me to enable those features. Lots of discussion about this on Reddit. Look at the shadow settings for that configuration file for you as well. They are not exposed via the gameplay UI, so you can only adjust them in the file.

Single player campaigns were NEVER traditional! They were introduced later and have always been to the detriment of the multiplayer experience. BF 2 and 2142 never had or needed a single player campaign. BF 3 and bad company started the trend of aping Call of Duty.

Yeah, BF2 and 2142 were the last PC Battlefield games that were developed before DICE was fully acquired by EA. After EA's acquisition they pivoted to console. That's when you get them trying to appeal to CoD's market and replicate its success. Single player campaigns, and simpler run-and-gun gameplay. Auto health regeneration, smaller squads, glowing sniper scopes, ability to spawn on anyone in your squad, etc. It's not the same franchise anymore, and DICE isn't quite the same studio either for that matter. I don't think EA/DICE today even know quite what Battlefield is anymore, or who exactly they're making it for. After they found a new generation of players (via BC1, BC2, BF3, and BF4) they've taken every opportunity to shake them loose with Battlefront 1/2, BF1, BFV, BF2042. Not that those are all necessarily bad games, it's just that they're all over the place -- everything from gameplay design, chasing industry fads, and who they seem to be marketing them to. Battlefield ought to be a franchise that fans should feel somewhat comfortable pre-ordering and/or lining up to buy day 1, and instead it's the textbook example for why you shouldn't.

Ok, so as someone that has been watching DF longer than I can remember, I have to ask... Am I the only one who thinks the video feels incredibly biased like it is trying to hide all the bad things about the game? Not only did this "technical analysis" take ages to get to the point, unlike many of their other tech analysis videos, but when it came to the analysis, it felt dry, underplayed and like they were in denial of what they are seeing. This whole video felt like a sponsored segment or some damn near propaganda haha. I am not sure what is going on but usually DF is quite objective with their videos and data and would call a 20+ FPS drop unacceptable, but they didn't even really mention it here. The horrendous bugs and unplayable state of the game was also severely underplayed. I am just so disappointed in DF with this video. You guys are better than this. Honestly, it feels like they are playing a completely different game from me, because everything I'm experiencing is very severe and proper depressing. I'm obviously not the only one either, given the fan outrage around this game. Like has DF been hacked again and this is the hacker's video, or they are held hostage and forced to make this video 🤣? I get the feeling that since this is quite a short video that only focuses on current gen consoles, we’ll probably get a follow up video by Alex focusing on the technical aspects of the game. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is more of a discussion on bugs instability there. I also feel like Oliver still needs a bit more time to get into the groove of his new position in the team. He is quite stiff in his delivery and seems on the less critical in his analysis. Room for improvement, but these are things he will get better at with time. I recently watched some of Johns early DF retro videos on the channel and the way his production and voice delivery has improved is night and day.

after a fair few hours on PS5... no framedrop spikes like shown above on the Xbox Series X NONE AT ALL. The issues i have are the Network issues like you have mentioned. FPS drops are only a couple max which is fine, never below 58fps while playing 128 player modes. however the game has issues with unbalanced weapons, glitches, bugs, broken gameplay and physics like flying a hover craft for a KM without touching the floor... DICE did not test this game, and i find that the Beta was better gameplay wise even if it was more broken.

Why is no one talking about the flocks of seagulls that look like they come from a transformers movie?? 😂 its one of the most distracting and worst vfx I’ve seen in a game

I really want to know what graphics settings the consoles are using. Is it maxed out or at medium to low settings? A gtx 1060 gets around 60 fps at low to medium settings and i dont believe the series S is more powerful than that, or is it? I cant even game with that resolution on a gtx 1060 in bf 2042.

Dear DF, Pleas consider using a simple graphical representation for your resolution numbers, alongside the xxxxp numbers. Something like those rectangles inside one another used to demonstrate how a smaller Full HD picture would compare to a 4K image or the schematics used to compare different camera sensor sizes and aspect ratios.

It's not as cut and dry as that. DRS often only reduces either vertical or horizontal resolution so the visualisation your suggesting is neither helpful or accurate in delivering information unfortunately.

I quite like this idea, just to give a visual representation of the range. Not unlike a percentage of the scale. When there’s a lot of numbers being thrown around, a different way to visualise these would be nice.

@@itsWelshy That's the best part. It would show how much you are stretching the resolution to get back to 16:9. How much anamorphic stuff is going on. Seeing RDR2 on PS4 Pro at 8:9 would give a good sense of the resolution loss.

Full HD (1920x1080) is exactly 25% (¼) of 3840x2160. It's not that difficult.

When the game works it works.. I barely notice frame dips and when I do its maybe 2 or 3 frames but only on all out war.. portal and hazard zone is stable and somehow looks better than 128 modes. This game should've released in march or april cause it needs alot of work and personally while I'm not a fan of their campaigns they should've added one. Especially when you consider that the map selection is weak. Lack of destruction really makes the game feel weak also. Miss taking an rpg and blowing up a big ass building and the opponent's die in debris.

Dislike. That was a not a technical review of the game from Digital Foundry, it was a common review of "Good Battlefield 2042" with occasional comments on FPS and net code. "The visuals here are attractive", like, seriously? The game looks like shit. I paid 70 bucks and got graphics worse than BF5. And whats with that "the graphical downgrade isnt too bad" when suggesting the lastgen version? No, it is too bad. You yourself listed a freaking bunch of huge downgrades a second later. I am hugely dissappointed with this video. Sadly there is no dislike count, I'd like to see how many people think the same.

It's weird that all these analysis channels used to compare ALL THREE versions AT THE SAME TIME to see the actual moment to moment performance differences between all systems (when Xbox Series X was winning most comparisons). But more and more, analysis guys are separating the versions making it difficult to get a real read on which system is performing best or worst in the same sections. Anyone else notice this?

I would bet the freezes and framerate drops are because of dx12. All previous dx12 battlefield games have that exact same problem on PC with dx12 enabled.
