Battlefield 3 Weapon Review - PDW-R

This weapon makes a great Crew weapon for Engineer if you're playing in a Tank roll. It reacts well to hipfire and seems to go hand in hand with its real life counterpart's purpose. The PDW-R was designed to replace carbines in crew rolls, and I think it really shines in Battlefield.

The PDW is in development by USA manufacturing company MAGPUL. It is somewhat modeled after the P90 and is one of the few PDWs to use 5.56 caliber.

This is my favorite weapon hands down in the game, especially post patch. I play as the engineer class non-stop and I feel like the class' weapons have been changed enough that none feel right to me anymore. The recoil on the PDW-R is great, especially using burst. I run holo, silencer and laser sight. It has quickly climbed to my number two when it comes to kills per weapon.

The PDW-R is one of my fav weapons in BF3. As snoov correctly points out, it´s totally average, but it makes me get more kills than most of the other guns. Don´t know if that´s a fact, but it just feels right. Keep up the good work guys!

Its one of those pdws best used in hardcore, where its lower magazine size is less of an issue and you can successfully take advantage of the laser + suppressor combo.

What I love about the PDW-R is that with extended mags, it acts just like an Assault Rifle. When I want to play like an Assault, but need to use Recon or Support equipment, I use this weapon.

I gotta say I'm totaling love with this gun now. I had been settled on the pp2000 in engineer class for months. But one time a couple of weeks ago, for a change thought I'd put up with the pdw's tiny magazine and give it a spin. It was more effective than I remembered and before I knew it, I had unlocked the extended clip. Now the gun is a fucking lazer. When your running toward a sniper who has you in his sights and is taking shots at you at the far side of medium range, he's supposed to win the gun fight. Not so much with the pdw. The recoil is that controlable. It reaches out there far beyond its class, and at close quarters you can just run straight through people without stopping like a G. Love that weapon.

I use this with a Support and Medic kits, and I surprisingly well with it. It reminds me of the good old days of BC2's Thompson.

@itut97 The bullet in the chamber is the first one to fire and as the weapon is fired the spring at the bottom of the mag pushes the bullets up into the chamber in less than a second depending on the gun

Another spot on review, and I have the same view of the PDW-R as Snoov. In fact I think its my third most used gun (behind the G36C and the M98B). I'd like to hear your views on either the UMP45 or the mighty G36C

I like to use it with a silencer on the recon kit and extended mags on the support kit. Always with kobra red dot and laser. I love it personally but I love all pdw's and shotguns.

While using the PDW-R I recomend running the support class just because its low ammo capacity but other than ammo size,its a great gun

Yeah I read about that, but what's being done is that the SKS does worse at long range (they're reducing the damage of the bullet at long range). Which doesn't affect how I noted the way I used the gun (close to medium range).

i find this gun an excellant substitute for the support class if you want to have an accurate decent close-mid range weapon for run-n-gunning/ sticking with your assault buddies and dropping ammo.

laser sight suppressor red dot this gun feels more rewarding when you kill with because of its 21 mag if you empty it in a gun fight ur risking ur life bigtime and that just makes it more fun to use tap firing this thing at medium range is amazing

Great reviews guys. Love ur videos. I used to go with this gun alot when i was trying to unlock my support weapons and stuff ( i don't really dig the lmgs in bf3) and this was my go to gun. It is great but it only works on certain maps. Cqc mainly. Anyway, i would be very curious if you guys would make a review of the Usas12 with frag rounds. I have the weapon unlocked but i somehow refuse to use it. I dunno, find it kinda unfair when u get shot across the map with that. And not to say when u p

PDW-R is my favorite weapon because, well, it's "speshul". You don't see it a lot. I usually roll with the laser sight and the PK-A 3.4x because the sight is least obstructive and offers me some zoom in higher rangers. In close range, the laser right means I rarely go for aimed, just smear hip fire over the enemy. My biggest mistake with this weapon is trying to engage targets at range with the single shot. That gets me shot a lot.

I went 70-40 with this gun in a 500 kill TDM server with extended mags and holographic sight, just like snoov said it feels awesome despite its meh stats but dont let that stop you, for close quarters i highly recommend this gun

Might I add a drawback in the new maps which I have not encountered in the originals (except caspian border), that there is some faulty wall/hit detection some places on the map as for example behind "Hotel"?

@SHuSTYBANG Yes. Mixed emotions. If they put the flags in key places, it could make for very frantic replay. Kind of like B in metro. I love frantic gameplay where you must rely on your medics to revive and stay in the fight. Rush could be good as well. As long as the design elements punish camping we should be good. Based upon the destructive potential, inwould imagine nonplace is safe, with bullets penetrating everything.

This is my second highest kill gun and I absolutely love it. I seem to have really good luck with it at range even given it's diminishing damage. I think it is because I have a good feel for the gun and I'm really able to stay on target with it and headshots are a breeze.

Got 1 gripe with your review: range of engagements. With the new patch if you can kill enemies at. Long range by burst firing. Also iit is the most accurate pdr ;(behind the mp7) and for your attachments, personally I only use extended mags. Finally with all PDR's u need to choose ur engagements carefully

Been using this a couple of days now, red dot, laser sight and extended mag with g18 sidearm and I have been destroying people in gun fights, went 79-49 and got best support score best using it with support for amma

I wish DICE would put more emphasis on ammo type when they make the damage charts... For example: The AS VAL should be awful at range and this gun should at least match the M4A1. The same goes for the MP7. It should have a low starting damage (16-18) but it should carry that damage very far due to its insanely fast bullet velocity. *Sigh* But I also know balancing is a thing, so....

nice review i love all the ones you 2 do. it fires 5.56 its mean't to give an assault rifle for most classes since PDR-R the R means rifle it was more aimed at the recon i am whit you! this weapon is beast in OP metro or in CQ maps when you gotta keep moving up the radio beacon for your team

It's a good pdw as it does Assault Rifle damage up close. It also benefits from the bullpup traits.

My favorite PDW is the As-Val. OMG this gun does insane damage from any range!

The PDW-R is a perfect gun for its purpose. Its a personal defense weapon tht is meant for protecting u. For example, if u r supporting your team with mortar fire or in a vehicle such as a jet or tank, this gun fits right at home.

@SHuSTYBANG For the most part, I prefer the ump45 as well. Yet its low rpm really deters it from being effective in CQC against beast weapons like Famas or AEK.

I personally think its pretty good considering how long I've used it though. When I was running around I picked up the PDW-R and there was something about it that felt comforting and even better I owned with it going like on a 15 kill streak in Conquest. But my opinion does not matter because I used it for only 1 match :/

i agree with what your saying but for me id use the 3.4 zoom lazer sigts and the extended mags.i use the 3.5 zoom beacause ive just got used to it and is it just me or some of the short range weapons a good for long range?

Why would I use this over the SKS w/ Laser Sight in an aggressively-played Recon kit? The SKS kills in two hits up-close and does better mid-to-long range to boot.

The specs on this gun are comparable to a carbine class. (After patching off course) I like the bullpup desgin giving a edge in close quarters compared to most of the carbine class.

I run it with suppressor and play recon, using beacons to spawn behind enemy lines and harass them as they try and move between objectives. 20 round mag is definitely a crippling factor, but taking out one enemy at a time is a breeze. recon with a decent 5.56 is much more powerful than people might think :)

I used to love this gun. Then the patch came out and gave the AS VAL, a gun I had never used, extended mags. I for some reason decided to use the AS VAL so I could get the extended mags, even though I hated the gun. Now I haven't used a different gun since the patch. LOL

I want this gun, dont see why they put it in the misc section with SMG/PDWs since its a carbine ( it uses rifle ammo ) but still it is probably the most accurate misc wep becuase it uses 5.56X45 NATO but it means it wont have same close range power as most SMG/PDWs using 9mm or 45 ACP.

REALLY hate it that DICE chose to NOT let it have suppressor and extended mags at the same time, like it did on the alpha and beta. (As well as some of the other PDW's too). It's sort of wrong, forcing you to chose between having enough bullets to be capable in most situations, and having a suppressor on it. Since when you put that suppressor on, it suddenly loses bullets, and damage too. So, you're left with a gun that needs extra firepower to do the job, and yet, leaves you with less.

The gun is named incorrectly because of copyright reasons. There are also two versions of the PDR (legitimate name): PDR-D, which is a bit more of an assault rifle, And the PDR-C, which is the gun in the video.

no magazines hold 30 rounds but apparently the character put a round in the chamber and if you put a magazine in a loaded gun it already has one in the chamber

Just a humble request, but on the guns with the extended mag; could you please put in the value of the extended mags behind the original on the statscreen? :) Like 30+1 (40 ext)... I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I feel it could add to a more complete overview of the gun, especially on the all-kit weapons where this is something one should seriously consider... Because TDM have short revive time period. So many people don't use revive. Not becasue there bad just sometimes you can never save a team mate. :/
