Big fan of the channel! You should visit some Midwest battlegrounds. Like river raisin, battle of Lake Erie, or the confederacy raid into Ohio, St.Clair defeat. Again cheers and thanks for keeping history alive.

Me too, I also love how he did the Napoleon series. Lee at G’burg (day 2&3) is right out of Napoleon. Grant at Vicksburg is Caesar in Gaul and Greece. It’s not identical, however you can see the influence in those campaigns/ battles.

Ok, I agree Vicksburg is arguably more important than Gettysburg. I sorry I mentioned that my Gettysburg instructor felt that Vicksburg had no military value. 😂😂 This was a great rewatch. A reminder of the cost it took to go keep our nation together. Happy Independence Day. 🎉

The infantry of the 20th Ohio weren't issued muslin cotton undershirts, and instead had wool? That's insane!
@H.G.Wells-ishWells-ish
@H.G.Wells-ishWells-ish Жыл бұрын
I looked that up. Nope! The US Amry in 1861 went with Canton flannel wool. The muslin shirts, used since 1821, seem to have been discarded around that time. That's crazy for Southern campaigning. Holy cow! Edit: I guess it makes sense since Southern cotton wouldn't have been traded to the United States during that period.

I visited Vicksburg a few years back and there was no evidence in their presentation that the 114th O.V.I. was there... I think the 114th consolidated into the 20th O.V.I. .. not sure. But my ancester must have been with yours in the 20th.

The 114th was there. In Lindsey’s brigade of Osterhaus’ division. They did not consolidate into the 20th or any other unit.

Where Port Hudson was not necessarily a part of the Vicksburg campaign it was part of the combined Union effort to rest the Mississippi from Confederate control.

I just moved to the south from PA and let me tell you, when you get an idea of the wilderness in the eastern battles, basically throw that into a malaria swamp jungle hell hole and thats the south in a nutshell, i cant imagine two hours down here in a wool uniform let alone a campaign season jeasus😅

It's a shame the 20th Ohio didn't encounter Gen Nathan Bedford Forrest's men.....I can assure you they wouldn't have been around the battlefield for long having fled for their lives.....a shame really....Had Forrest been fully utilized I don't think Grant would've been idolized as he is today....aahh what if....and if you don't believe me read Sherman's book as he describes his encounters with Forrest.

@@VloggingThroughHistory actually you would be dead wrong......Humm I wonder if the sacrifices your ancestor made is being venerated and honored by the Negro race? Based on current ideology you and your ancestors are racist and you must pay for reparations based on the color of your skin ....I wonder if your ancestors would be proud of the country they passed on to today's era.....I could debate you for hours on which side should've won and whether it was all worth the blood and sacrifices every white American made over the issue of slavery.....and your mockery of Texas is in my opinion insulting and unprofessional for a person who vlogs about history..... should I go and insult the 20th Ohio Infantry mock their sacrifices?..... careful your showing your true colors...

Disagree strongly....Grant was corrupt, a racist and the head of one of the most corrupt administrations in US history......read your history.....you need to learn about his "no Jews policy" in General Order #10......also he sought to wipe out the American Indian.....genocide at it's finest.....

I enjoyed this. I grew up in the east and live in Vicksburg now. Of all the battlefields I've been on, Port Gibson, Raymond, and Champion Hill maintain their integrity the best. In the time since you made this some things have changed. The American Battlefield Trust acquired almost all of the Champion land including the site of Champion Hill. The hill itself is long gone the result of a gravel mining operation. But the change of hands means that you can walk up a dirt road that follows the original road alignment to the Crossroads and, if you're willing to take on the ravines, snakes, and underbrush, you can follow most of the Confederate positions on the north side of the battlefield and their route of retreat off the hill as far as the crossroads and the road to the northern crossing over Bakers Creek. It's an almost complete battlefield park. I was one of the over 300 volunteers who cleaned the stones in the National Cemetery. I appreciate your recognizing our efforts. Sometimes timing is everything. Waddell's stone is white again, less than two weeks after your original post. Patience is also important. The material we used to clean the stones works over time. So what the stones were like when we were done is not nearly as good as they are now. However a collapse of a section of the cemetery in 2020 that followed 23 inches of rainfall (yes, 23 inches) has focused the park's attention on recovering the remains of those soldiers, all US Colored Troops, and stabilizing that part of the cemetery again. As you might imagine that's been a major focus of theirs.

Interesting fact on the Benjamin Butlers Dept. Of the Gulf sign. The 4th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment only existed until September 1st, 1863. The regiment would be mounted and become the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry

Excellent video I wish I was there, in 2020 I took advantage of COVID and since I live in Pennsylvania I drove across the state and went to Gettysburg on the anniversary of the battle (which normally is packed like six flags for the anniversary) and got to see it as if it were a normal day. We got through the whole battlefield in two full days so for the third day we went south to Sharpsburg to see antitam. It was really cool we saw the worst battle in American history and the worst day in American history in one weekend, I wish I had more time to go explore these battlefields like you are, I love watching, please keep it up
