It was one of the iconic movements of the American Civil War, Stonewall Jackson's flank march at Chancellorsville. Traversing country roads, streams, and 12 miles of the backwoods, Jackson's men arrived in the Union right flank on the afternoon of May 2, 1863. What followed dislodged the Union right flank and led to the wounding of Stonewall Jackson. Jump in the car with Kris White, Chris Mackowski, Dan Davis, Tim Talbott, and more as we retrace the steps of this phase of Chancellorsville.
This video is part of our coverage commemorating the 160th Anniversary of the Battle of Chancellorsville. View the entire tour series here: • Chancellorsville: 160t...

Outstanding multitasking by Kris as he drives and describes the battle with amazing equanimity, while also handling the microphone and passing it on to Chris.

This is a great driving tour. I really appreciate it. The tract of land for housing, I assume, is for a very large development. It goes on forever. How much you want to bet that in some future year, the homeowners will demand that the road be widened?

I love this video and the expert commentary. Thanks, guys. Recognizing the competent job that JEB Stuart performed leading Jackson’s Corps, and acknowledging Lee could not permanently replace Stuart as his cavalry chief, I’ve often questioned why, with the reorganization of the ANV Cavalry into a corps in September 1863, was Stuart not promoted to Lieutenant General? If Forrest, why not JEB?

I have driven that route many times but didn't know about, or forgot about, the unfinished railroad cut crossing the road and about the Welford house. I hope to get down to that area later this month and will have to check those two locations out. Thanks for the tips and great video.

Oddly, at 4:43. the plaque dedicated to the "Father of Oceanography", contains the word, "meteorology", which is the study of the weather. A few miles away from Catherine Furnace is U.S. Ford, which is named after the 'U.S. Gold Mine'. Although Best was courtmartialed, Jefferson Davis sought to overturn the court's ruling, but Best never returned to the army. (source: 'The Civil War in the East'.) As per one source, rebel artillery was positioned on the Wellford property to halt a Federal advance. Reynolds's U.S. First Corps, which Hooker recalled to march to Chancellorsville, was about 17,000-18,000 men strong, and it had about the same number of troops Lee had after Jackson departed on his flank attack.

The problem in letting a center area be developed is that the integrity of the protected area is much weakened. Homeowners who have no appreciation of the history of the area, or may hold Stonewall Jackson in contempt, will be demanding adjacent infrastructure, stores, etc.

Kris is so deadly lol Killed Jackson's flank march as overrated, cant believe a word Hooker says (I agree), just laid waste to Sickles (slimeball) and butterfield ( i hope i caught that right) now poor Oliver Otis Howard gets it. I think Kris is the only man who might run through generals faster than Lincoln!

Jackson only answered to god. He did what he felt was right. I think calling for 75,000 volunteers to invade the southern half of the country was a provocation if there ever was one.
