Garry Adelman names 20 Civil War battlefields that you can visit in 2024 to observe the 160th Anniversary of 1864 battles. Be sure to check out the local websites for each battlefield to help plan your trip!
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

The Mansfield battlefield still feels old and connected to history, even though I-49 isn’t far away. That part of Louisiana hasn’t changed too much. It’s a nice place.

Thanks Gary. Being an Atlanta native, besides Kennesawy, I am also going to Pickett's Mill State Historic site which has a 160th anniversary in May. Another one of Cleburne's victories.

I conduct tours of the Red River Campaign, including all those little known sites that were critical in the campaign. Most of them are on private property but can be visited from public roads. Mansfield is a state park, a must for any Civil War buffs, but it is just one of many sites.

Many years ago, I sang for a memorial service in the cemetery of Reformation Lutheran Church in New Market. As I recall, this service is presented each year around Mother's Day weekend.

The Battle of Brown’s Mill, fought July 30th 1864 located near Newnan GA. A Union raid behind Atlanta lines led by Edward McCook was finally put to an end by Joseph Wheeler!

You hit another favorite battlefield of mine, Kennesaw. Another must eat near this site: Big Shanty BBQ in Kennesaw. One of my very favorites. I used to drive hotsot deliveries in a small box van across a good part of the country. On the way home, my van was small enough to visit battlefield sites. I can't even tell you how many I've been to, many repeatedly. That and bbq was my hobby! Thanks for all you've preserved for all of us.

Another worthy mention is the battle of Westport (now part of Kansas City, MO) which commenced October 21- 23, 1864. It is known as the largest Civil War engagement west of the Mississippi. Samuel Curtis led Union troops again Sterling Price’s Confederates. I visited in July 2023. The battlefield is chopped up because of growth of the area. Nonetheless, they’ve got a very good visitor center and museum and you do get the sense of what was involved.

Also, the Battle of Fort Davidson down by Ironton, MO. That battle disrupted Prices advance towards St Louis for he attacked that Union position against his general's advice. Price changed his route from St Louis to Jefferson City then to the KCMO area. After Westport came the Battle of Mine Creek, KS - the largest cavalry clash west of the Mississippi..

2024 marks two anniversaries for my family. May 30th Bethesda Church (now a residential area) is where my g-g-grandfather’s (Patrick Reagan) story ended. He had only mustered in the previous March. On the other, g-g-grandfather #2 (John Ery) joined in 1861 under a 3 month, and was at the defense of Washington DC. Then he joined the Cavalry and was in the Peninsular campaign. Mustered out on a surgeon’s note, a year later he mustered in again as a sergeant. In 1864, was a Brice’s Crossroads. The week after, he was promoted to regimental color sergeant. He mustered out in 1866.

Good list!! A few battlefields WEST of the Mississippi River: Fort Davidson in Missouri (1st major battle of Sterling Price's Confederate Army's advance towards St Louis in 1864) Westport in Kansas City, Missouri (another person mentioned this battle. 3-day battle that destroyed Price's army) Mine Creek in Kansas (largest cavalry clash west of Mississippi River and pretty much finished off what was left of Price's army)

Another option is the Second Battle of Kernstown (July 24th, 1864)in Winchester, VA. The Kernstown Battlefield Association will be holding a special author's tour by Scott Patchan on the 20th of July from 10:00-2:00.

Don’t forget about the Bermuda Hundred Campaign. Even though little to nothing of the battlefields are preserved, you can still visit Fort Darling and visit both City Point National Cemetery and Oakwood Cemetery’s Confederate Section (Specifically Section F) to find where a number of the men who fought and died during that campaign are buried.

We're past its 160th by a couple years now, but this summer I'm heading down to check out the Glorietta Pass battlefield trail in New Mexico. Going to hit up Fort Union as well and head up to Los Alamos to learn a little about the Manhattan Project. Should be a fun trip!

I don’t know if anyone is doing anything to commemorate the anniversary, but Loose Park in Kansas City preserves much of The Battle of Westport, 160 years ago in October.

Ghost hunting is tourist BUNK. There's enough actual scary and horrible things associated with civil war or revolution without fudging historical facts and making stuff up.
