Well... Blackstone fortresses were likely designed by the Old ones to kill the C´Tan. What likely happened the warp energies the fortresses channeled into the star were turned against themselves in a feedback loop by Flame of Purity´s void shielding. Overloading the ability to channel them which send a backlash pulse trough the fortresses negatively charging the blackstone to repel the warp. effectively shutting them off the Immaterium. the move made out utter desperation... But in dark times, desperation must be embraced and turned into strength!

The Imperium has a martyrdom culture, hell, in the sequel, Spire (though with good intentions) had Abridal destroyed and stating that, if it really was him, then staying dead would've been the greatest honor he (Spire) could give to him.
