Battlefleet Gothic: GW Tau Starter Fleet

In this video, I run through a starter fleet for the newest space faring race of warhammer 40k, the Tau.
This fleet is around 1500 points, which provide standard all-rounder style. I have also mentioned a more "competitive" fleet. This is also for the games workshop tau fleet for tau. The forgeworld tau came a bit later and I'll record another video for then
Just remember- Ordnance is king in this game.

Me too, mainly because they remind me quite a lot of the Rebel Alliance fleet on the original SW triology...

Before being given the first playtest version i had made some protypes out of 40k tau bits. I still have some of them. But I mainly used some ships from Full Thrust. When we playtested the SG Tau the Merchant was originally much cheaper, but points were added offsetting them from the Hero and Orcas. Same for the Explorer. 5pts of each Orca that can be carried on grav hooks and 10pts(or more) of the allowed Hero are included in the costs of Explorer and Merchant. (So the Merchant would really be 85pts, still a little expensive for what you get) The Explorer was originally limited like a battle cruiser if memory serves. So you'd of needed 2 Merchants to field an Explorer. So originally you had to have merchants! The optional 2 extra hits were added late in the day. After the model came back from casting.

Turbidious please, we've been over this in the overview videos. The good use for Merchants is backup gunnery platforms to cover other ships. The Kor'vattra Tau fleet works like a carrier group, which means it needs to be deployed and manoeuvered by a carrier group, with concentric layers of ships surrounding the Explorer carriers. The Heroes form the tip of the outermost layer, and the use for the Merchants is in the layer beneath that where they can cover the broadside arcs of the Heroes with their own frontal guns. I have done this before several times and it works brilliantly. Personally the one I'm not convinced about is the Hero - they're actually very overrated. They look good on paper, but lack a lot of flexibility with their ordnance. I'll take one to spearhead a task group (and act as a missile sponge if need be, which they are very good at), but past that I'd rather have a squadron of Defender class starships than a second Hero.

The Hero is either undercosted or overpowered. It toasts a Lunar in a 1 v 1 for same points.
