With or without USA, China is determined to get Taiwan. Imagine the USA just stand still and China is allowed to have its free reign of terror in the East. Remember when the USA adopted a non interference policy towards Japan in the 1930s, it even export its oil to Imperial Japan. What did the Japanese do? They bombed Pearl Harbour, and brought the USA into the war in the Pacific. To conquer Taiwan, China will have to eliminate the treat posed by all of the US bases in South Korea and Japan to have a free reign of terror in the Far East. For sure another member of the 'axis of evil'; North Korea and Iran will join the fray and the world will be at arm once again. Leaving Taiwan and China alone to settle their business is the most stupid idea of all.

China is now threatening war against the newly formed democratic republic of Taiwan. America can and will only side with Taiwan should China attack. Why? Because Taiwan is a newly elected democratic republic who currently has great trade relations with the U.S. Today the U.S. is trying to improve relations with China and definitely do not want or desire WWIII to take place today or ever between us or any authoritarian government for that matter. So all this being said the United States morally, militarily. and financially are caught between a rock and a hard place when it comes to the China/Taiwan conflict as well as the Ukraine/ Russia conflict. and would love to stay out of both of their domestic conflicts; but are obligated to be on the side of both Taiwan and Ukraine both newly formed democracies. Peace must be sustained between China and Taiwan and eventually between Russia and Ukraine Anything less then this in this small world of ours means WWIII and the end of civilization as we know it. The total number of personnel and hardware means close to nothing, what does 5,000 tanks mean to China if they can't get them into the island? Taiwan's army has a smaller area to protect, they have a large inaccessible coastline that will require a large deployment much larger than D-Day. The fight will probably be in the mountains for years if they're able to defeat a nasty insurgency. This isn't Hong Kong with less than 6 million people in a large city.

..and China, Iran, North Korea and perhaps Russia on the other side. China needs oil supply, a cheap one, for the war on wider scale. The US Navy controlled many of the choke points for oil supply; the Straits of Hormuz the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean that lead ro the Straits of Malacca, the Straits of Singapore, also its base in the Indian Ocean could control the access to the South China Sea. In the Pacific and Far East they have bases in Japan and South Korea. If China were to be temporarily victorios it must launch a surprise attacks to neutralize the threat from these bases just like the Japanese did to Pearl Harbour. But today the US bases are numerous and global reaching. That is what China should neutralize first before it launch an invasion on the tiny Taiwan. Good luck, China

That means the PRC is China’s only legal gov under international law, and today the PRC also become China’s only legal gov recognized by 180 countries around the world, including the USA. "The USA recognizes the Government of the PRC as the sole legal Government of China. Within this context, the people of the USA will maintain cultural, commercial, and other unofficial relations with the people of Taiwan."
