You missed out the best exchange: PM: Who knows Foreign Office secrets apart from the Foreign Office? Bernard: That's easy - the Kremlin.

There's also the one when Hacker is particularly jumpy about spies, that goes something like "Oh that's Luke, he works for the foreign office" and Hacker asks "Which foreign office?"

My favorite exchange from this episode: Hacker: Oh, this is nice. The Americans are delighted by our little visit to St. George's Island. That's good, isn't it? Sir Humphrey: [resigned] Excellent. Hacker: They say they have got a whole airborne division ready if we want reinforcements. Sir Humphrey: [sharply] Reinforcements of what? Hacker: Reinforcements of goodwill, Humphrey!

I love how Luke was stupid enough to think that he could just piss off his boss, the PRIME MINISTER of the UK and not face any repercussions.

You'd be surprised how many people in the history do it, though it could certainly be argued that mankind has more than its share of idiots in high places.

We have to assume that he has been doing so for some time, and getting away with it. This is just the first time the PM cottoned on to it, and the last.

Best statement from the episode is: "Sound about right", PM's reply to the statement "I gather there is an airborne battalion in the air".

I do love this episode because Jim just get such a masterly victory at the end, but I do feel sorry for Luke. Though he was complicit in the foreign office's duplicity, he was mainly just a pattsy, following orders that his bosses gave him, and probably lacking any real power to challenge them himself, and yet he ends up receiving the most punishment.

what Hacker obected to was Luke as a smarmy Git who thought Hacker was an idiot. That's what the israeli ambassador tells him-more diplomatically- why haven the US told him- because he trusts the foreign office (as explained to Bernard by Sir Humphrey and Sir Richard) Also Luke tells him outright what he' should do. Bernard and Sir Humhrey never do=they persuade him

Not at all. If I have an enemy i like to know where he is and what hes doing. But Luke makes a good point. A person designated as Ambassador has to be accepted by the country before he can take up his position . But Sir Richard will see it as a punishment- and Jim has probably got agreement from his friend, the Israeli ambassador.

A battle that Hacker comes out on the winning side thanks to the Israelie ambassador giving him a helping hand. Which he uses to to give the foreign office and Humphrey bloody nose and shoes himself in a heroic churchillian light.

Maybe they made comedy tv show about politics, but considering last 30 years and unfortunately doesn't look better. Century's ago this side of planet earth have many power nation, let's say just in last century WW1,allied joined and win, then WW2,again allied come as victorious. My point we didn't wait for America to tell our great grandfathers and grandfather what to do,if they wanted to come and help us was ok,but we didn't wait. Now no one can do anything without asking Americans, why?Like it or not,Russia laid down and Americans notice that no one can tell them,NO and since 90 they decade to be global Police force who no can stand up and mostly started to take advantage of their power from 99 by bombarding former country Yugoslavia with out constant of UN council with slogan, people are killed and best way to stop them is to bombing all infrastructures, industrial, bridges, water, electricity and what ever they believe is correct, but then missile miss target and hit hospital, civilian trains, schools,TV stations and rest, excuse when kids are killed, sorry.WHAT A FU..????? And after that every other country they went to save from their own evil government had titles, bombing for their FREEDOM. Everything ok,people are ok because of that last word, freedom. How it looks now nothing can be done or decided by government of country thinking about what is best for their country and nation is BIG NO-NO,First ask Big Brother America. Apparently we need someone else to confront America,if they are scared of Russia which is lately proven that they have to think about it before they do it because Putin. Listen, hate or love Russia they need someone to balance power because they are doing what they want, take what they want and we get refugees. Is there anyone else who is thinking or seeing this except me that Americans don't give a fu.. about anyone as long as they have cheap fuel????

Great Britain didn't need to listen to anyone else in the past, as up till the 1940s, it still had an empire. Post that, the US/Russia became the superpowers, and Great Britain was indebted to the US banks. It has never recovered. It has the smallest army of the G7, smallest navy, and sadly politicians with the smallest brains and smallest amounts of integrity, honesty, and compassion

well, you are wrong, because two-polar world won't make the situation better, because we would have a struggle for power, leading to proxy wars, coups and other not so pleasant stuff. Either way, the weak countries be in disadvantage, but I would say that in two-polar world pressure on those weak countries from strong ones will be higher

There were some good points here and there, but holy fuck, RUSSIA IS NOT COUNTRY TO LOOK TO PRESS AGAINST THE UNITED STATES. The lesson one should take from that is, "the European Union should be more firm and united in taking care of their countries afairs". All combined, the EU would be a hell of a superpower! ... Granted this is the opinion of a yank, but whatever. For the record, you're talking about our government: LOTS of american civilians would be relieved if another nation put it's foot down to stop our government from doing dumb shit like the Iraq war.
