*Me before this movie:* "I'm not that much into battleships, they're old and slow..." *Me after this movie:* _"Missouri's main battery consisted of nine 406 mm/50 cal Mark 7 guns, which could fire 1,200 kg armor-piercing shells some 32.2 km. Her secondary battery consisted of twenty 5 in 38 cal guns in twin turrets, with a range of about 16 km. With the advent of air power and the need to gain and maintain air superiority came a need to protect the growing fleet of allied aircraft carriers; to this end, Missouri was fitted with an array of Oerlikon 20 mm and Bofors 40 mm anti-aircraft guns to defend allied carriers from enemy airstrikes. When reactivated in 1984 Missouri had her 20 mm and 40 mm AA guns removed, and was outfitted with Phalanx CIWS mounts for protection against enemy missiles and aircraft, and Armored Box Launchers and Quad Cell Launchers designed to fire Tomahawk missiles and Harpoon missiles, respectively. Missouri and her sister ship Wisconsin were fitted with thicker traverse bulkhead armor, 368 mm, compared to 287 mm in the first two ships of her class, the Iowa and New Jersey."_

Battleships were amazing. Nothing short of amazing. For a few decades they were what it was all about - the whole story. It was just the development of aircraft that changed the economics - it became possible for a cheap airplane with a torpedo to sink a huge expensive capital battleship. So emphasis shifted to carriers and carrier groups, that could maintain their own in-the-air protection shield. But anyway, for those few decades battleships were just things of beauty.

To be able to reasonably travel, even with a huge war machine!, the aliens would need a technology that is at least 500-1000 years ahead of our...this means that a military confrontation would be like a battalion of modern marines facing the army of king George II equipped with some tin armor, swords and bows.

This would be in addition to the Carrier commander, the Wing Commander, and the Logistics Commander of the CSG; which also likely be on the carrier for the sheer availability of space and capability to coordinate the 3CI of the battlespace.

pretty sure mothership was made of Lorencium. They Served As Naval Craft And Operated By Floating Across Water Making Short Jumps To Regent Their Positions, Their Primary Weaponry Consisted Of Giant Explosive Pegs Like Ordnance Fired From Turrets That Are On Top Of The Ship's Hull. The Weaponry Is Actually Inspired By The Pegs Used In The Battleship Board Game To Designate A Hit Or Miss. Standard Anti-Weapon Defenses Were Capable Of Destroying Them But a Single Projectile Once Embedded Into It's Targets Drilled Down And Exploded Causing Considerable Damage.

In the movie the aliens are shown standing down when the humans retreat. I think the implication is that they don't want to waste ammo since they're stranded on Earth without reinforcements or resupply (which is why they're trying to contact the homeworld). In this case, it seems to me that they're powering up the turrets to intimidate the humans and giving them a chance to retreat, before committing to a fight.

I rented the DVD on a whim and despite the ratings I ended up liking the movie. My Grandpa fought the Japanese during WW2. He saw HELL. BUT. He made one thing clear. After Pearl he hated the Japanese. But by wars end he made peace with them and help no ill will. This movie shows 2 former enemies...both the old and new generation working together against a common enemy who rules of combat differ from our own. This would of made Grandpa smile. RIP Grandpa.
@equarg6 жыл бұрын
Michael Nobles I am not sure of any specific metals, was too young when I was shown them. He was a Senior at West Point when Pearl was attacked (was out jogging when he hear the news over a radio playing on someones open window). Immediately upon graduation he was shipped to the Pacific. He had enemy ordinance land next to him (shrapnel and hearing damage in one ear as a result). My Grandpa got to secure beaches for McAuthor. One old photo that shows McAuthor waist deep in muck being pulled ashore.....by Grandpa was just off frame......... My Grandpa also witnessed a terrifying statistic first hand. More Japanese soldiers died due to starvation then actual combat. After WW2 Grandpa still served and was in fact in charge of one of the retaliatory nuclear buttons during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He retired soon afterwards a Brigadier General. When he died, he was buried with full honors right outside (and next to) the Protestant Chapel on West Point grounds with an 8 gun salute. Wish I knew more, but I am not talking to my father (left mom for another woman he met online). Grandpa was a gentle old soul, and avoided talking about his service. I think he got flashbacks. Ironically, he married a German American nurse (my grandma)he met on a cruise right after the war was over. He would tell one joke if you took to long in the bathroom. "I was beginning to thing to think either the shit or a sniper got you you took so long"! One day, in a good mood, he told 10 year old me the story behind it. Apparently a good friend of his on a ship a stones throw from shore had to go #2. Apparently the bathroom had a large port hole....perfect for a Japanese sniper. While his friend was on "the throne" the sniper shot him in the head killing him. Personally, Grandpa thinks the shit killed him before the sniper did (insert his chuckle). 2 years later I realized sonething. GRANDPA HAD A PHOBIA OF BATHROOM WINDOWS. In his house one Bathroom had no windows, while the other one only has 1window (very high up too).... So heavily frosted you could not tell if it was day or night. When he visited us he REFUSED to use the upstairs bathroom, only the downstairs windowless bathroom. Never asked him directly...but my parents confirmed that phobia! RIP Grandpa.

Damn. Thats quite a story. I know with my dad three of his uncles fought and all were KIA during ww2. Apparently one was a paratrooper and another a beachstormer. Don't know what happened to his third uncle but regardless. They fought during d day and did their duty as a solder. As far as I know they're all buried somewhere in europe where they fought. They were all aboriginal but in the face of war. It didn't matter I suppose at the time. But looking back I know that the native people really helped during the war. They already had great surviving skills and new how to hunt whether it was for food or for tracking the enemy. Anyways though I hope the native people will receive more recognition in the future.
