2:15 They are "NOT" loading Torpedoes (that goes in the water) What you see there, are Powder Kegs that launch the 15-20in shells. 4:50 Sailors back then got Good Food for Thanksgiving. Today we get Rolled Turkey (What I wouldn't give for a Leg). 10:27 "SHELLS" not Missiles. Missiles are Self Propelled. These Shells (Explosive, by the Yellow band) are launched by means of powder. 10:45 Thoes are Training Shells (Blue band) Non-explosive/Duds. 10:48 Once again "Shells", not Missiles were used on that delivery system. I live by the ship if you think the tour part is huge its barely 1/4 of the ship. If you want to see the sections off limits that haven been kept up since its decommissioning in 1947 schedule a spot on the lost battleship tour to go deep down and high up where you usually cant go it is really huge. They take you to the other engine rooms to the brig and up in the conning tower just for starters. They even have a haunted battleship tour that's right up your ally. It's nice to see th BB-55 get some screen time it was at almost every major battle in the Pacific, fought as protection beside the "Big E" the Enterprise and has more battle stars than any other battleship in ww2.

As a former sailor, I will have to say sir, you are a great example of a land lubber. Lovingly said. A ship is not a boat. A eating area is a mess deck. A sleeping area is a living compartment, a bathroom is a head, And the big bullets at the naval gun placement are called projectiles. I laughed during your entire tour of the mighty North Carolina. Thank you sir!!

Those flat figures demonstrating what they would do have always been creepy to me. They used to let nonprofits join together to turn the ship into a haunted battleship each October until someone actually died. Imagine going thru that massive beast wondering where the next blast of compressed air was going to come from! lol Great video & glad you got to see a little more of Wilmington.

Carpetbagger, there are 9 retired battleships around the country. The four battleships of the Iowa class ( Missouri, Wisonsin, and New Jersey). Two of the South Dakota class ( Alabama and Massachusetts). The North Carolina of the Washington class. The Olympia in Philadelphia, which is actually a Spanish/American war "armored cruiser" and finally the Texas, which is a World War one era, but served in both world wars. The Texas just closed, about to get renovated. There are aircraft carriers that are retired- Hornet, Intrepid, and Midway. Overall, this country has done a better job than others remembering it's naval history. Besides the afore mentioned ships, there is the Constitution, which was built in the late 1700's served in the war of 1812 and is still used to train cadets from Annapolis. The Hunley, the first submarine to sink another ship (civil war) is now in a museum. It was found by writer Clive Cussler and raised by a historical group and is now in a museum.

@@robertswickard1262 Not sure what you're saying, but beyond the ships I mentioned above, near the Massachusetts there is several other museum ships, if memory serves a destroyer and submarine. Galveston has "Seawolf park" which has a destroyer escort, a PT boat, and a submarine-USS Cavalla. The cavalla sank a giant japanese aircraft carrier..

Nice video. She's a massive ship compared to our Texas. Couple bits of clarification though, those 'torpedoes" where actually the powder charges for the main guns, loaded in behind the shell. The "missles" are actually the shells which later you identified others as projectiles which is correct although right afterwards you say missles again.

Was that real food in the ship's mess hall or plastic fake food? It looked pretty tasty and real but how often would they have to cook fresh meals just to have them sit out there for people to look at and then eventually have to be tossed out and replaced with fresh? Considering all the "sailors" are cardboard cutouts or silhouette figures you'd think they might just put pictures of the foods they ate in those bins.
