Based on its African location, I am tempted to chalk the dinosaur chasing the cast as being Carcharodontosaurus, a large therapod around the size of Tyrannosaurus (if not larger) that did live in Africa between 72 and 145 million years ago. Two things make me consider that it's not really intended to be that dino: 1) Based on the 1995 publication date (according to Google), this would have been a time when Carcharodontosaurus was a *very* obscure dinosaur, with the only remains known at the time having been destroyed during WWII. (An expedition being done around this time would uncover new remains, but they wouldn't be described in depth until about 2007, and even if the writers had been aware of the expedition, it would have probably been too late to included it). 2) The therapod has two fingered hands - a trait that's pretty definitive of the "advanced" tyrannosaurs. So, yeah, it's probably a geographically displaced Tyrannosaurus.
+Tareltonlives And yet, I enjoyed what I read of this series better than the second TV series. It might not have been all that good, but it ignored Galactica 80, and the characters were still the ones I recognize and like. As opposed to the version where the only ones with redeeming qualities were Cylons.

John Calicos was one of the greatest Canadian stage, film and television actors who ever lived! A pitty he passed on from several heart attacks. I recommend checking out The Starlost, created by Harlan Ellison and Ben Bova, a sort of prototype of Babylon 5, which Calicos also guest starred, alongside future Space 1999 season 1 regular, Terry Morse, also of The Fugative fame. I will admit that it has episodes that are good and bad, despite being short-lived and lasting only one season and 16 episodes (blame CBC for the usual studio meddling), but Calicos delivers one of his best, if not hammiest performances ever! Plus Walter Koenig and Percy Rodrigez also had guest appearances.

Since radio waves are a form of electromagnetic radiation, aka light. So, yeah, if they didn't time travel, they are definitely way in the future.

I'd be more interested in the comics, if they had Lucifer on board the Galactica instead. Yep, that Lucifer, who in the novel series met Starbuck when he was briefly taken prisoner during the event of the "Tombs of Kobol", spend several books fondly reminiscing about him and then meeting him again on a planet that worshipped Starbuck as a hero. There they truly became friends but it ended with Lucifer being deactivated only to be used by Spectre later as an assassin on board... who was stopped by the power of Friendship. OMG I love the 80s ;) BTW Baltar's goal in the novels was quite clear - he wanted to rule the Cylon's and by that the galaxy, which was also Spectre's and Lucifer's goal (although Lucifer turned good as mentioned above, cause being Master of the Universe is not nearly as cool as being BFFs with Starbuck LOL)

I reviewed the entire run of LIefeld's Galactica on my site. I totally understand why you haven't gotten to #2 because frankly with two exceptions the whole run was a #2. The Starbuck miniseries set during the original series was fairly decent if not involving what's become a running theme of Starbuck crashing, everyone thinking he's dead, and Starbuck having to escape some Cylon-controlled world. Then there's a special collecting stories from their anthology comic that told how Adama and Cain first met. It showed that without Liefeld's plot mucking things up Robert Napton could make a decent BSG story. The rest are garbage that should only be bought if you want a laugh or some kind of completist. I'm still trying to figure out how to get rid of my copies because my comic collection is too big to enjoy.

However, the model ones didn't count on the humans surviving, nor the Sixes convincing the rest of the skinjobs and centurians instigating a revolution and civil war which destroyed the resurrection technology and much of the cylon fleet.

Yeah, Baltar was suppose to be killed off in the pilot, but was saved when the original plan for the series was changed from a movie trilogy to series. It makes no sense why the John Calicos version Baltar wants to be the last human alive. It goes against how this Baltar originally was to be dictator of his spared colony. At least in the reboot, the new one was more of a tragic figure and an egoistic prick at the same time.

It was influenced by Mobile Suit Gundam and Macross more likely. BSG I would say might have had a hand in influencing MSG, and Macross, and Space Runaway Ideon, so perhaps in a way it indirectly influenced Exosquad. Although, Space Battleship Yamato did come out in 1974, a few years before BSG, and did influence Macross, Gundam and Ideon, if not as a sort of a few critiques of it. And perhaps Yamato influenced BSG and even Star Wars as it has similar themes.

Like in most media I prefer the original to the remake. Which set a bad example that all sci fi shows need to be dark, and pessimistic with asshole characters going up against even bigger asshole characters, while the only decent people it portrays are broken, hardened or laughed off. Though a new iteration that mixes the two, would be interesting. Keeping the lasers, aliens, and original origin of the Cylons, while the Galactica wrestles with moral quandary's, the Cylons have human models that become conflicted, with a couple characters who make you question if mankind is worth saving. _Without_ going overboard with silly or dark concepts.
@CosmoShidan2 жыл бұрын
I wish the original was kept as a movie trilogy as Larson intended, while keeping the Cylons reptilian. Otherwise, I prefer the remake. The original devating from its plans makes it too typical of the space western that was prevalent in the 70s a la the Starlost and Space 1999. E.g., the space cowboys against blackcoated enemies.
@CosmoShidan2 жыл бұрын
"Which set a bad example that all sci fi shows need to be dark, and pessimistic with asshole characters going up against even bigger asshole characters, " What planet are you on? There already dark and pessimistic sci-fi shows starting with Space Above and Beyond, Tek War, the X-files, Dark Angel, First Wave, the Outler Limits, Lexx, Earth Final Conflict, Starhunter, and Farscape in the late 90s and early 2000s. Plus, if you look at Lexx Starhunter, and Farscape in particular, the characters in those particular space westerns were full of morally ambiguous characters. BSG 2003 took it to the next level by relating it to then current events.
@Avenger854382 жыл бұрын
@@CosmoShidan Yes but its Galactica's specific style being copied. Shows like Farscape and Lexx may have had characters who had secrets and unsavory history but they were also so over the top and insane at times, keeping it from being bleak, with the characters like Moya's crew having amazing comradeship. Galactica had little of that due it wanting to be "grounded" and "realistic", which was novel at the time but has since, in my opinion, overstayed its welcome, with how every show since seemed to be in competition to so who can out pessimist the other. Also, how the 90's told/portrayed "dark storytelling" was very different from now simply due to what was both allowed within a certain age rating at the time, (which arguably forced them to be creative within those restrictions) and the desensitization to violence and taboo topics not yet being as severe as it is now.
@CosmoShidan2 жыл бұрын
@@Avenger85438 I still don't see how grounded and realistic settings in sci-fi has overstayed it's welcome, since you have that style in Babylon 5 and Space Above and Beyond. That is, if you are referring to real world politics. Heck, even Starhunter had the same grounded and realistic setting by not including aliens and being human centric with advanced A.I. As for the "amaxing comradieri" in Farscape, the characters behaved much like the new BSG characters, such as the time that the Moya crew cut off Pilot's arm to get a trade deal, or how Chiana slept with D'argo, only to find out she had an affair with his son, much like how Leoban was tortured by Starbuck, or how she's in a relationship with Sam, but then having an affair with Apollo. What certain degrees of violence? I mean, if you saw the first episode of Lexx, it was a gorefeast. Not to mention that in Space Above and Beyond, it explored torture of POWs in wartime even before the rebooted BSG in 1996. So that's some dark stuff there. And what certain 'age restrictions' and taboos may I also ask? I would appreciate an example or two.
@Avenger854382 жыл бұрын
@@CosmoShidan That was in the first season before they grow close and established their dynamics with each other and Chiana screwing things up was a deliberate act of self-sabotage she enacted out of fear of commitment. When I say "grounded" and "realistic" I'm referring to how its misconceived to mean having a pessimistic tone, and the characters to be volatile, hostile and violent, throughout the run, with ever increasing moral comprises made by them. Babylon 5 was a properly grounded and realistic, in that the tech and dynamics were based on how things would work in space, and the issues that arise in politics and diplomacy. Thing weren't dire and bleak all the time and good people weren't constantly talked down and punished by the universe for daring to be optimistic. Moments of levity and introspection were shared as well and characters often went without surrendering to their worse impulses. The showrunner said he based the Galactica reboot on the Trek episode _Consciousness of the King_ where Kirk struggled with his desire for revenge but from how that went you swear he forgot Kirk didn't go through with it. Also when I said that things were different back then, regarding violence and taboo, i meant that about tv in general not just sci-fi. Violence may not have been absent from the genre but it wasn't a universal element that dominated it, but because boundries are always being pushed Audiences have gotten more jaded to such things and all of television has been affected by the need to stay relevant by having even more visceral presentation, including sci-fi and Battlestar set the prescient because of how popular it got.
