This episode marks the introduction of one of the BSG’s most important contributors: Bear McCreary as composer. Musical scores for TV shows can be hit or miss, but he outdoes himself on this show!

Since then I've also heard him on Caprica, Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, Outlander, Agents of SHIELD, Defiance, Da Vinci's Demons, The Cape, Black Sails and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, the film Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and the video game Forspoken.

@@Pokeysaurus One catch. Just using what we saw in the miniseries, when Adama says "Brace for impact", Tigh replies, "Haven't heard that in a while". That indicates they fought in the first Cylon War, which would seem to eliminate them. Lee being Adama's son would seem to eliminate him.

SPOILERS Apollo never got kissed by Six. In one of the behind-the-scenes videos where the actors read fan questions, Tricia Helfer read one that asked when Six would stop hanging around Baltar and "get it on" with Adama or Apollo. Tricia pointed out that Six already tried it on Adama and it didn't work (in "Six Degrees of Separation"). When she said, "As for Apollo..." Jamie Bamber then said, "Yeah, producers, come on." This was between Seasons 1 and 2 or 2 and 3. I wonder if he was annoyed it never happened.

If I could give one piece of spoiler free advise, while watching this series is keep in mind when it was made. The mini series originally aired shortly after 911 and a lot of the themes and issues they deal with were allegories for what we were all going through during that time. Watching the show now you may not pick up on all of them but at the time it was just brilliant writing and acting.

It's based on the Original Battlestar series from the late 70's. Which it's self is loosely a story of the Exodus in the bible. Which may explain why the remake is heavy on the religious side, The gods of the Colonials and the Cylon god. Speaking of colonials, It's no coincidence of the 12 colonies of man, With a mythic 13th tribe out there perhaps. Foundation of the United States also enters in to the inspiration for the show..

William Adama's rank is Commander. Saul Tigh rank is Colonel, which makes him the Executive Officer or XO, aka the second in command of the ship. The officer rank structure for Galactica from highest to lowest is Admiral, Commander, Colonel, Major, Captain, Lieutenant, Ensign. You can have a rank but also have a title based on your function in the military. Like Lee "Apollo" Adama is the CAG (Commander Air Group) but his rank is still Captain. Chief Tyrol and Duella are enlisted, with Tyrol being some kind of chief petty officer and Duella being a specialist. Names like Apollo, Starbuck, Boomer, these are all pilot call signs for the people Captain Adama, lieutenant Thrace, lieutenant Valeri respectively. Hope this helps you sort the ranks/roles a bit.

Two other useful Galactica Military terms you'll hear a lot: *DRADIS:* Short for Direction, RAnge and DIStance, this can be thought of as sort of like real-world RADAR, used for navigation and tracking enemies. *Actual:* When speaking over the radio/wireless, Actual refers to the commanding officer of a vessel. If you call Galactica, you'll speak to whomever is operating the communications; if you ask for Galactica Actual, you're asking to talk to Commander Adama specifically.

Saul Tigh, the XO of the Galactica, was one of my favorite characters from the outset of the story. Yes, he's a drunk and a loose cannon when it comes to his interpersonal relations, but when the shooting starts he knows how to handle his job - which is making hard choices that will get some of his crew killed in order to accomplish the mission. There is a lot to unpack with his character, but putting some consideration on how surviving a bloody, genocidal war can affect the mind and the soul may help you understand why he is at his best while on duty only to crash down into the worst parts of his personality when the guns have stopped firing.

No spoilers, but religion will be a constant throughout the series, so be ready for that. Saw some eyerolls. 😝 It’s notable that the colonials are polytheists-the “Lords of Kobol” they worship as gods which have been name-dropped up to this point share the names of deities from Greek, Roman, and Egyptian religions on Earth. The Cylons are apparently monotheists, with Six consistently describing God as a singular entity. I do not know if the Cylons were religiously motivated to exterminate mankind, but it wouldn’t surprise me given our own history. You may have noticed the twelve colonies are named after real-world constellations (ex: Caprica/Capricorn, Gemenon/Gemeni, etc.), and the colonials believe that Earth is a nigh-mythical thirteenth colony, with all of them originating from another nigh-mythical world called Kobol. I never saw the entire series (only about halfway through season three) so I’ll be interested to see where things go. But yeah, The Expanse is easily the best scifi show I’ve ever seen. In the Navy (US Navy anyway) "Captain" is both a rank and a position. The rank of captain is an Officer-6, equivalent to a full colonel in the army. The position of captain is the commanding officer (CO) of a ship or base. Very often the rank and position correspond, that is the position of captain on a ship is often filled by an officer with the rank of captain, but not always. I served for a while on a minesweeper, a very small ship, the captain of which was a Lieutenant Commander. Sometimes a major capital ship like an aircraft carrier will have a captain (the commanding officer) with the rank of Rear Admiral. Anyway, the officer in command of multiple ships will usually be an admiral and is referred to as such, but again not always. The squadron of minesweepers I was in was commanded by a full Commander. In that case, where the squadron commander does not have the rank of admiral, the officer in charge of the group of ships is referred to as the Commodore.

I think the 33 minutes are required for the cylons to receive data from the olympic carrier and do some sort of calculation before jumping to the fleet. This way the fleet just jumps without having to engage in those nerve wracking, dangerous battles every 33 minutes

Couple points to note. 1. There is at least 1 Cylon on the Galactica ( Boomer ) so they could never lose the Cylons. they would just follow them there. 2. The Colonials have to calculate the next jump and becasue their jump and nav computers are not networked ( no computer networks on Galactica ) it takes time. Then they need to validate the calculations, then distribute it to the fleet. They will address this in a later episode. Also after every jump ( not talking about this episode but in general ), the first thing they do is plot a jump and send everyone to the fleet. In case of trouble they all jump to those coordinates so they dont have to waste time with calculations. 3. The Cylon FTL tech is superior to the Colonial's ( they also have networks so computing and processing stuff is much faster ). They can jump faster and further so they held all the cards in that situation. Their jump tech will also be addressed in a later episode. Did not go into details becasue those would be heavy spoilers.

Also the feat in this episode is really incredibly from their point or view as jumping is really straining for the ships FTL drives and structures.. jumps are usualy reserved for inter-colony travel between the 12 systems , even within the same system they usually fly real space (as evidenced when the FTL capable Colonian Heavy-798 ship took hours to fly in real space to Galactica instead of instantly jump there) and here they performed 240 jumps in 5 days.. ships were allready beginning to show problems in their FTL drives and probably fuel consumption would be a big problem at this point as every jump requires fuel

The nature of “Head Six” was kept ambiguous intentionally, for a long time. As you probably already noticed, she usually appears when Baltar is under stress, and she gives him hints and ideas that help him solve problems -but she never says anything that he could not have come up with on his own. So she might just be a figment of his imagination; a product of his sense of guilt. A manifestation of some internal dialogue. Or she could be something more real, one of many, many possibilities. 🤔 Great character, great concept.

I remember watching this episode live, when it first played, and I was absolutely floored. There was no way this was a TV show put on by a SciFi network! As I recall, this episode won several awards, and it was amazing how it kept the viewer just holding their breath! Regarding the metal Cylons, when you mentioned the "OG Cylons," technically the one chasing Helo was a NG (New Generation) Cylon. If you remember from the mini-series, they had other, blocky metal cylons, from the first series. As the "hot Cylon" said, "they're still in use..."

Some points for you. The wall of pictures is all the lost or missing people of the colonies. This is in honor of families who posted photos on street lamps in NYC in the days after the 9/11 attacks, missing photos for their lost family members. Think of the Galactica as a US aircraft carrier. The creators actually toured a real carrier to learn how to add real military protocol to the series. The 12 Cylon models, each one has a role or purpose. The Six model is the seducers, but the one in Baltar's mind is something different and fans and the creators call her "Head Six". You are on a fantastic voyager now. I remember sitting in 1978 watching the original BSG. Trek, Babylon 5, Lost in Space, Firefly, and BSG (but not in that order)

The actor who plays Helo is also in the show Dollhouse. It's got a great concept, where there's a secret (illegal) organization that takes volunteers to become "dolls". They have their original personality backed up on a hard drive and then mind wiped. Rich and powerful people can then request them for various purposes with custom imprinted personalities. It's a fascinating story and great writing and acting. Also, it's a Joss Whedon show, so great all around quality. I hope you will consider watching it on the channel someday.

For some reason, this episode stuck with me ever since my first time watching it. I think it really conveyed the feeling of the hopelessness that humanity's remnants go through after a catastrophic disaster, and I loved every minute of it. Perhaps my favorite scene was when they had just gotten the "good" news about the Olympic Carrier's reappearance and were generally pleased, but then the camera shows Adama, skepticism and doubt and suspicion writ large on his face, and he's just like, "...action stations! There are two series you should put on your watch list for later. The first is Dollhouse (which Joss Whedon put into production after Firefly got cancelled). Dollhouse went into production just as Galactica ended so it inherited a few cast members who were working in Vancouver at the time. The other series is The Leftovers, created by Damon Lindeloff when he finished LOST. It shares a lot of that show's genius and its DNA. It only ran three seasons with a total of 27 hours so it's a fairly short watch but it packs a huge and satisfying punch.

The Galactica cannot jump every 5 minutes because it takes immense computational power to plot a jump, and, without networked computers, it literally takes them 10-15 minutes to plot a successful jump. This is why Galactica will broadcast to the fleet emergency jump coordinates and then continually broadcasts adjusted jump plots for the emergency jump coordinates every 5-10 minutes to account for the vector and displacement of the fleet from the original emergency jump starting point that was calculated (the fleet is always drifting away from said starting point).

@funnylilgalreacts i lnow the religion is a huge part of the show. I think the best way to look at it is to think of it in terms as "mythology" and how it connects us as humans. The survivors of the 12 colonies believe in many gods, where the cylons who were made in the image of their creators believe in one true god (monotheism) the cylons are trying so hard to emulate their creators that they now look like them, have a reigious faith, and in caprica six' s case experience human emotions like love. (Hence always kissing every man she comes in contact with).

It takes more than 33 minutes to calculate the jump, to send the jump plan to the fleet, for the entire fleet to execute the jump, to land the fighters on Galactica and for Galactica to execute the jump (last). It takes the Cylons exactly 33 minutes to calculate and execute the jump, which is why the combat air group (fighters) and Galaticas defence batteries are required. 33 minutes is about all the time they have to escape or be destroyed.

But there are some seriously useful story gap fillers coming up later, as separate content. I would rate it as "unmissable", in relation to the main story. One of the things about the myth of Earth that was a HUGE selling point for me as a little kid when first series came out in the 70s was this idea that they had this 13th colony that had been lost for so long that, supposedly, went to Earth (when you first started watching the original movie, you thought this was us only WAY in the future) so you realize that they're suggesting that these people were the ones that seeded human life on Earth or they helped ancient civilizations (the whole Ancient Aliens concept), which is why there were things in their culture that reminded us of stuff we have. Like the Viper pilot helmets looked reminiscent of ancient Egyptians depicted in hieroglyphics and their planets/colonies and ships were reminiscent of Zodiac and some ancient Greek and Roman constellation names. As a kid, that was enough for me to be like, "This is SO COOL!!" The old show also had different terms for measurements instead of hours, minutes, seconds, months, years, etc., they had other words like centons, centaurs and other things that I've forgotten that if you listen long enough (not that long) you could figure out the one-to-one correlation of those words from context clues. They also had swear words you could get from context, which seem to be the only things this show kept from the language stuff of the old show. There's felgercarb (which you only hear a couple of times on this series) which means "shit" and frak which I'm pretty sure you can guess what that's a substitute for. 😁

IMPORTANT: Every episode starts with a short opening scene. BUT then it is followed by a short montage of the current episode, with HUGE spoilers! So when you hear the drum beat look other way! When The drum beat part ends all good, watch episode.

I wouldn't call them huge spoilers personally. I watched them when the show aired and didn't feel spoiled. Without context they're just teasers. But sure, if you wanna go in as blind as possible definitly close your eyes.

Not all of them have spoliers, but some do, i remember one which spoiled an episode for me completely. SKIP.

I actually like the way they're edited and the clips are quick enough that you don't really have any context . Then again I grew up watching these types of teasers for TV shows so they're not a deal breaker for me

Not really spoilers. Just a bunch of quick clips without any context behind them to get you hyped for the episode.

Just a curiosity as there's lots of people giving varying opinions on that part of the opening, but do you consider watching a trailer as being a spoiler?

"I don't know if...." "I don't know who....." "I don't know" "I don't know" "I don't know". The good news is that that doesn't put you behind in the game. That's exactly how you are supposed to be with this show right now.

In terms of the ranks think Airforce meets Navy, for William Adama, his rank is Commander (in this instance for the BSG universe hes closer to a Commodore cause hes in charge of the fleet), Saul Tigh is a Colonel and his position on Galactica is Executive Officer (First Officer) and thats shortened to XO, Apollo is a Captain, Starbuck is a Lieutenant so on and so forth

Also, I've seen a few reaction channels skip the intro flash after the opening scene as that flash gives away some of the episode, sometimes its master-crafted others it gives too much away

They don't make people cylons; They can't jump every 5 mins, they need time to recharge the jump drives; Gayus Baltar, Saul Tie, Adama, Lee, Starbuck, Dee, Laura, and others, very unique and great characters.

I have watched this show three times already. Recently we were discussing different series at work and I mentioned this one. And here on KZbin your video is recommended to me. And now I have reached the middle of the first season. There will be many twists and turns at the end. P.S. Google is definitely listening to us. It's not the first time this has happened:-)
