“No. Not now. Not ever. Do you hear me? I will use every cannon, every bomb, every bullet, every weapon I have down to my own eyeteeth to end you. I swear it! I'm coming for all of you!” What a powerful performance by Mary McDonnell, and such a shame she didn’t even get an Emmy nomination for this. And Tricia’s reaction to that line is great too. One note about Sam’s injury - Michael Trucco had a MAJOR injury, he was in a convertible that flipped while driving through Malibu and broke his neck, largely immobilizing him around this time and I think this gunshot to the neck is a way to deal with that.

She's incredible. Everyone in this show is incredible. At this point there isn't a single character left who isn't mesmerizing. Cally was probably the last character who wasn't mesmerizing, and it wasn't the actress's fault. And Alessandro, what a complex and powerful performance. Zarek was always a bad guy in a decent suit, but Gaeta was always a good guy. He thought he still was a good guy. Maybe he still was, in some sense. But he was wrong, and he was unsuccessful, and you can't be both.

A tragic end for Gaeta. Compare his last scene to his first in the miniseries, where he tells Adama that it has been an honor to serve under him for 3 years, and Adama returns the sentiment. Gaeta is beaming, it means a lot to him. His final comment to Baltar, that he hopes people will eventually know "who I am", is interesting. We love our labels, and people like Gaeta always go down in history as one thing: "traitor." He hopes that someday people will also remember that he had been the boy scribbling building designs on his family's books, and an idealistic officer who loved science. The guy who got a tiger tattoo on shore leave. Not just remembered for what he did on the last day of his life. That's fair, if not unlikely. Baltar giving him that and burying the hatchet was another moment of growth; he wanted Gaeta to feel "seen" at the end. And I think Adama "saw" him too at the end. He walked back on the "you'll die with nothing" promise. He allowed Gaeta a final "meal" with Baltar, in quarters, no guards. He allowed Gaeta to die in uniform with his rank insignia, which certainly isn't the real world norm. Killing Gaeta hurt Adama, but ringleaders had to go, and he couldn't execute Zarek while sparing Gaeta.
@darthroden

The fact that he gave them both the firing squad is also telling. That is how the soldier dies. He could just as easily have put them out the airlock, had them hanged in public, or locked them naked in a cage and charged people admission to see the "animals". Okay maybe not the last thing, which is what Hitler feared the Soviets would do to him if captured for historical reference....but he could have easily done far worse than a quick death, and they would have deserved it for all the lives lost in their little day of rage.

It was Sprcialist Gage, one of the two Pegasus crew members who was beating Helo and Tyrol with the soap in a towel before Fisk stopped them that had the lines about R-ing Athena. Capt. Kelly was an officer on Galactica from the miniseries, was Tigh's 2nd in command Boomer shot Adama, was on Galactica during the Adama Manuever (had the line "Altitude 99,000, falling like a rock"), and was the one killing Baltar's lawyers which is why he was imprisoned prior to the last episode. It actually bothered me a little bit that Helo ended up Galactica's XO when Tigh wasn't available (on New Caprica and a couple other times in Season 3) over Kelly since he should have out ranked him. It also bothers me a bit that both Kelly and Gaeta never advance in rank. Gaeta especially starts the show as a Jr. Lieutenant and is the same rank when he's executed. Some of it likely comes down to there being more attrition among pilots than bridge officers leading to more promotions among them, but it still bugged me a bit. I thought the same about Harry Kim never being promoted up from Ensign in ST:VOY.

I always thought Gaeta was a representation of what a lot of people in the fleet felt. He came through for humanity so many times ( like when he made the computer network to find the fleet), he served as Gaius's aid during his disastrous presidency and when the cylons came he found a way to get information to the resistance, which it turned out was run by 3 cylons. He just couldn't bring himself to be allies with the cylons who wiped out 12 planets worth of people, and when it was discovered they were in some of the highest positions in the fleet and they were allowed to stay. I can imagine some people saying there could never be forgiveness. Gaeta (while easily seen as wrong from the viewers perspective) was an idealist, and stuck to his beliefs even when it cost him his life.

I don't think Gaeta did stick to his beliefs. I think he held them strongly and tried to uphold them but Baltar's presidency broke him. When he perjured himself to kill Gaius in the trial Gaeta acknowledges vengeance matters more than his beliefs. The fact that he tries to put Adama on trial just hits it home. He doesn't value a fair trial, he values it looking like a fair trial. At this point he wants vengeance and justice and honour be damned.

@eimhinduffy5736 , I have to wonder if Dee's death was what proved to be the last straw for him. Obviously, he and Gaius had personal conflicts and tensions (seen in the show and the webisodes), but in the grand scheme of things, I don't think any of that truly diminished Gaeta's character and steadfast loyalty to the mission. As far as Adama's fate, well it should be pretty clear such an uprising couldn't play out without him departing the scene, and given the chaotic nature of events as they were happening, some full scale, formal trial was simply impossible. For a change in leadership to cohere in these circumstances, he had to go, and quickly.

This 2 part episode was just so wild, again the growth and change in characters both Zarek and Gaeta have very cool arcs to this story and to the situation. It was sad to see the actors leave and not make it through till the very end, but man it was a good arc to experience. The Cracks in the Hull of Galactica that the chief sees, so its battle damage, its indicating that the Galactica cant handle too much more (but im sure you have seen these actions play out in your current and future viewings) same with Anders arc it all has a point and strong story point in the future. Also when it comes to Roslin and her speech there at the end towards Gaeta was one of my favorite moments from Mary McDonnell in the series when she has her moments she has them so well. Baltars arc is still one of my favorite in the show Cant wait to you see the final episode here we are nearing the final 5 soon. It's interesting that Felix's stump stopped itching just before he died - as if he was finally at peace. Unlike Zarek, he knew and accepted the risks and possible repercussions if they failed. I think Zarek also knew the risks and repercussions and that’s why he stressed to Gaeta that he had to willing to go all the way. For example, He stressed that Adama should be killed quickly but Gaeta had a personal Adama to admit he was wrong to give him some legitimacy. Zarek was cold blooded but right if he wanted his coup to succeed. Zarek had always accepted he would die from the moment he had a gun to his head with Lee way back in the prison. His look to Gaeta said it all as both accepted their fate.

I really like Gaeta as a character. In a way I feel like he is the most relatable. He had career ambitions, but he also has his own past and history unrelated to his career. He was smart and had good skills and just tried to apply those skills to be useful. He just watched as all the crazy went down and never really got that directly involved in the drama. He was just there to do his job. And I also get his motivation with this coup. This "enough with all this crazy drama what are we even doing" Like if I was somehow in this situation and had to pick what character Id most likely end up being it'd probably be Gaeta...he seems the most reasonable and realistic to me.

Gaeta died as a 'different' kind of hero. With every fiber within him, he hated cylons. He put up with President Baltar, just so he could get the resistance the information they needed. He watched the then Commander, get shot at point blank range by a cylon, which later, Adama forgave and even accepted her into the ranks. From the attempted genocide, to sabotage, to captivity; there was no love lost on the cylons where Gaeta was concerned. Being chased, halfway across the galaxy. He hated cylons with everything he had in him. And when it was announced that cylons would be 'joining the fleet', that was the last straw. In Gaeta's mind, the Admiral was no longer fit for duty, and felt a need to relieve him. That's not an easy call to make. You know that he loved and respected Bill, but at the same time, it just felt 'wrong' to bring your enemy on-board your ships, and start to call them 'allies'. Zarak made all of this into a vendetta, a 'power-grab', and unfortunately, Gaeta got caught up in it. He did and said things that he probably wouldn't have done. He only learned a little too late, that he put his trust in the wrong politician, and there was no turning back from that. Not everyone will understand, but I respect the character that was Gaeta. He never changed throughout all of this, and that was his character arc. In a different time and place, he would have made a great Admiral in the Colonial fleet. He did what he thought needed to be done, and no one else was capable of stepping into his 'shoe' to do it. If it had been up to him, I'd be willing to bet that not a drop of blood was spilled, but he would get his point across, and when he was heard, he'd give back command to Adama. 'A brief lapse of judgment and fortitude'... He'd take his licks in the brig for a while, and come out again as one big happy family... minus the cylons, who would be free to follow, but not board any of the civilian ships.

I think Gaeta's arc is one of the saddest of the entire series. Constantly does all that he can for the good of the Galactica. One of the greatest heroes of New Caprica as he constantly risked his life, without ANY help and with ZERO recognition, narrowly avoiding execution, (metaphorically) stabbed in the back by Baltar, and finally executed next to Zarek for his unwavering refusal to work with the cylons. He and the Chief were always two of my favorite characters.

I bloody love this episode! - it's so fraught & tense throughout, and the emotion from everyone on both sides is just so well acted: from Kellys breakdown wrestling with his decisions, Kara cradling wounded Sam, Romo's crisis of conscious - to Zaraks desperation at the end, Gaetas acceptance of defeat, Baltars voice breaking as he comforts Gaeta: everyone is acting the hell out of this fantastic episode..... But among all that great acting, Mary McDonnell wins this one for me: the raw emotion in her face & voice, the bravery, the fury - and THAT speech (I'd sure as hell run!!), but the little moment that really got to me? - the little gasp & tearing-up when she's reunited with Adama! 🥹❤❤

To me, leaving it out further amplifies how different they were despite being co-conspirators. Gaeta was greatly misguided but had a genuine desire to do what he thought was the right thing; so he would really want to take the opportunity to let the world know what his motivations were.

Samcan not come back from that shot. He can not be resurrected. They blew up the Resurrection Hub specifically to stop resurrections. All Cylons now face Final Death (VTM reference there). If they die, they're gone for good. Unless someone rebuilds resurection technologies. And yes, Humans do have that capabilities. Zoe Graystone, the daughter of Daniel Graystone, was the first person to be brought back through the combination of her own Avatar program and Daniel's scientific mind to create a body for her Avatar to inhabit. Daniel also created the Cylons, or at least his company created their mechanical bodies, and it was a damaged version of an MCP (Meta Cognitive Processor) housing a copy of Zoe's Avatar that gave them life. This can all be seen in the spin off series "Caprica".

Gaeta assumed this would be a simple and clean take over. He states his case. Adama sees the light and admits he was wrong. The Cylons, and any who support them go their seperate ways. Every one lives happily ever after. Guess he slept through the course in training that said people die in combat scenarios. Playing war games, engaging in military exercises, every one lives (generally speaking). He only sees the Cylons as the big bad, and once they're gone all will be well with the world. Another thing Gaeta missed, is that Cylon FTL systems are 24 times more capable than human ones. Back when they were thinking about a rescue from the colonies they predicted that it would take at least 240 jumps from Galactica's position to return to the colonies. However, once they used Athena to hook into the FTL computer of a captured heavy raider, they were able to make the trip in ten jumps. Impotant to note that they used their own Raptors and note Cylon craft to do the jumps. The maximum jump range of any FTL drive is unlimited. The limiting factor is the 'Red Line'. The red line is the maximum jump range that your FTL computers can calculate. The further you go from your start point in a single jump the more errors creep into the calculation, until a point is reached where the risk in jumping is just too unsafe. To improve these calculations you need better computers, and you need to network them. They keep taking in the show at this point about installing Cylon FTL engines onto the fleet ships. Engines are hardware. What is really being put on is software and the infrastructure to link that software to the rest of the ship, effectively creating a Cylon network on those ships. Cylons have the ability to hack colonial networks with relative ease, and any that they create, would have back doors to allow them to take over. This is why the fleet captains are opposed to this idea. They'd basically being turning control over to the Cylons.

@davebeattie9573, I'm not sure he presented too many signs that he thought it would be an easy operation, or that in any way, he took it lightly. These were a shocking few episodes back then. One of the best story arcs pulled off so far. We were already familiar with some unrest amongst our beloved characters before, but this full-on mutiny and so much bloodshed amongst people that considered each other friends, fellow soldiers or colleagues before, was truly heartbreaking to witness. I always loved Felix as a competent, reliable and honorable officer, so it especially hurt to see him go down this path, after all the things he had to endure for the last few episodes (and throughout the show). Could not help but to sympathize with him still, even in this very episode. You can clearly tell from his defeated look that he knew they made a mistake, that it went too far and wasn't about justice or safety of the fleet anymore. If he only he would have called it off, maybe he could have been spared from execution. But nope, he thought he had crossed the point of no return and soldiered on...

Gaeta's a rather tragic figure. He's brilliant and experienced, good at his job, most of the fleet can probably say that owe him their lives. At the same time, he left to go be Gaius' chief of staff when he was elected on the fervent belief that it really was the right thing, and Gaius really _would_ be a great president and do good. He went into this attempted coup with his eyes wide open because he fervently believed it was necessary for the survival of the human race, and also that it would go over bloodlessly, Adama would come to see that it was right and go along with it, and Zarek definitely was a good person trying to do the right thing too. Maybe he's a moron. Or maybe he's just _optimistic_ and always believes things will work out, even if they seem dire. Seriously, this is the guy who _believed_ in the goodness and right motives of Gaius Baltar and Tom Zarek! Easy enough to just say he's dumb, but then you can also come out and say things like "they don't have to _kill_ Zarek, they could just leave him on some planet", like that's somehow _different_ or nicer.
