I'll be 70 this year. I let things pile up, then stuff happened over and over, and ... Grandkids started coming. Then coming to live. Thien some going elsewhere, then back to live. You sound like me. I'm almost 70. My house is very small. I have those 3 tiny closets in 3 tiny bedrooms and that's it. My kitchen has few cabinets so most everything is on cheap bookshelves I assembled. My knees hurt so bad most days I don't do anything. I have a terrible habit of Rx, vitamins, mail and dirty dishes are right by my chair. And it's unreal how much I end up right there. I'm too ashamed to invite anyone in. Are you like this?

@@wendi2819 On clean sheet day by nightfall my bed is covered in stuff because that is where I spend most of my day. My knees are awful painful, and there are stairs to get to everywhere I need to go. It's a tiny house. Only two bedrooms have a very tiny closet. The third has attic stairs taking up a third of the space. No coat closet - no linen closet - no cabinets. Laundry is in the basement, and the one bathroom is on the second floor. I finally purchased a bedside potty chair, so at night I don't have to climb the stairs. Definitely more knee surgery in my near future.

As someone who has one of those "clean" houses you described you see in the videos, it doesnt stay clean without habits. I'm also a person like you where if I walk into another room with things I get distracted so I've adopted the mentality of do it now, otherwise I'll forget. When I cook food, I clean my dishes before I even sit down for dinner, dishes take at max 5 minutes, that's the perfect time to wait for your food to cool for you to eat. Once I eat dinner I immediately clean my plate I don't sit it in the sink to watch TV and clean later because then I know it wont get done. When I buy something from the store I immediately put it in the cabinets, when I receive a package I immediately open it up or stack it in the corner unopened, I dont open the box and then leave it in other packages. When I get the mail I read it immediately or put it on my desk so when I get back to work I know to take care of this first, I shred what I dont need, and store what I need in a portable portable folio. When I do my laundry I immediately put it away, I dont do laborious tasks if I know I dont have the time to complete them because it will turn a simple 1-2 hr tasks into a 3-4 hr task later down the line. By adopting these habits my weekly cleaning routine is solely cleaning, I can put aside 1-2 hr for my whole place just to clean, I'm not decluttering or organizing things because they are already in place I'm just doing weekly cleaning of things that accumulate dust/dirt.

And this is exactly where I dream of being. I would love to be able to make those things a habit and I do truly try. ❤️ I have a cleaning schedule that I am attempting to stick to this year and adopting one habit at a time. This month my goal is to try to keep my hallway and dining room clean because those are the two things you see first when you walk into our home. Overall though, one of our biggest issue is we just have too much stuff. I do not have a place for everything to go which is why I am working on decluttering as I go. We definitely have adopted a more simple living mindset and are working to make our home match our mindset. ❤️

@@coffeecarbsclutter Thats a great goal and I think if you stick to the schedule you set up you'll get it done! For decluttering there are tons of great online resources like the 4 box method or 12-12-12 challenge where you basically try to find things around the house you can trash or donate and then work something you plan on keeping into that space. Excited to see how you're able to transform your space in the future!

I am always happy to watch someone who has a house like yours organize because it is real life. I don't watch the "made for the stage" channels that start with something most of us would consider done, either. They just aren't real.

Because that is how you keep a house clean. It took me a long time to learn this, but people who have nice and clean houses all the time clean things before they get gross. It's quicker and easier to clean when things are just slightly out of order rather than wait until it's a disaster. This is the secret of the "naturally clean" people. Take laundry as an example. Instead of waiting to do laundry until you have a huge overflowing mountain, try doing one load a day. Even if it's a small load. It washes and dries faster and only takes 10 minutes to fold and put away. It has taken me so many years to learn this, and I truly hope this comment can help you or someone else.

I grew up in a house that looked like this one a good day. And there weren't many good days. I thought it was SO strange going to other people's houses and seeing how "empty" theirs looked like. It didn't even register as being clean. Just empty. I started working on teaching myself to keep my own home cleaner 7 years ago, but I'm just now ready to start doing the decluttering part. It was so hard to get rid of even 1 thing until recently. But I wanted our child to grow up able to recognize what a clean and organized home looks like and how to do it, so he's not figuring it out for the first time in his late 30s. 😅

I will never ever judge someone's mess. You never know what they may have going on in life or are going through. I should have filmed what my home looked like last May after my husband was unexpectedly hospitalized and things got scary for a time. I literally did not have the bandwidth to keep the house tidy while traveling to and from the hospital, taking care of the dog, doing laundry, and getting very little sleep. It was even worse after he came home but I eventually dug us out of that crisis. This reminds me, I want to talk about the spoon theory on one of these episodes as I think it will help those of us who are struggling in multiple ways. ❤

Suddenly it all made sense and I could stop gaslighting myself about faux hoarder-denial!!!! 🤪😵‍💫 I challenge anyone who's feeling judgy to educate themselves on ADHD and especially Executive Functioning Skills. Hi! Sitting here sewing a cover for my chair cushion, I came across your video!! I'm 71 so after many years of cleaning I have slowed down a great bit. A couple of tips I can share with you, ok? One is bring a basket to put odd stuff in and a trash bag. Two is to remove everything that goes somewhere else into the basket. Three is get every bit of stuff off the floor, out of corners and into the next room. I say into the next room cause, I may start in there next or start that room the next day. Basically moving stuff threw the house as I go. Stuff like tool boxes and paint cans has to go to a closet or somewhere out of the house, porch pantry, etc. When I finish clearing off my table, I like to put a plant, or a pretty bowl with fruit in it, just to feel extra good about my success!! Also I sometimes tackle the biggest thing in the room, Bed, Dishes, whatever is the biggest offender. I used to have a basket for the kids toys in the living room, so they could put their stuff back. Hope some thing can help!!!
@ElizabethClary1
@ElizabethClary1 Жыл бұрын
Your way of decluttering/ cleaning sounds like mine. I prefer to pick up arm loads of stuff and drop them in the room they go in then go back to whatever space I’m cleaning. I think it helps to compartmentalize everything, which works best for my brain.
@coffeecarbsclutter
@coffeecarbsclutter Жыл бұрын
It really does help with the way my brain works. If I stay out of a room too long, it no longer exists and therefore will never got done. I have to make quick trips to the other rooms to just drop off stuff and get right back. Do you carry your stuff in a basket? I saw a few other people comment that they use a basket that just moves from room to room with them and I thought that was a good idea. I think I might try that next time my house gets wrecked and let's face it, there will be a next time. Slowly I am getting rid of stuff so each time the disasters are smaller and smaller. 🌻

Thank you for being real. Thank you for not putting on foot long false eyelashes before setting up the camera. I like the initial sort idea to build momentum. Get a trash can and an empty box. Pick a starting area. Discard what you don't want. Put what does not belong to the area into the box. Make neater piles of what belongs. Next step is empty the box. Now is when you run around to the varous rooms in the house. Place whatever belongs in a particular room on a bed or counter then move to the next room until the box is empty. Return to the starting area until only what belongs there remains. Don't go into the closets or the cabinets. You're just going after the stray sheep at this stage. Give yourself a hug, then move to the next area until the entire home is sorted. Now your house is tidy, but not clean and there are skeletons in the closet. PIck whether you want to start scrubbing surfaces or digging out the skeletons hiding behind doors and inside drawers. Do not agonize over every item because that will bog you down. If you can't decide, keep the thing and dither about it later. With more practice, those decisions become easier. It is nice to donate things, but if you have not done it yet you probably won't. Be honest with yourself. Get rid of the unwanted. That is your priority.

I try to do in-depth/deep clean days, but I lose energy and motivation about a quarter of the way thru - add to that limited mobility (lipedema in my legs and bad knees), and it ends up taking almost a week to clean one room. The "low-hanging fruit" approach is a wise one and I love the idea of setting a timer as well. I like the idea of putting something in the room it belongs in but not necessarily the final place it belongs. I do the exact same thing! Thank you so much for your video. Hoping in april i can remodel the kitchen and paint. pacing myself makes achieving these goals more doable. u have a lovely home, hope once its cleaned it stays that way. no one wants to do this on a regular basis. maybe on friday or saturdays the kids need to put their toys away and clean their rooms. 1 day a week so the weekend feels lighter and more enjoyable.

Good job! For some reason, I find minimalist channels really annoying, but it is relaxing to watch you working on your house, maybe because we both use similar methods. Anyway, I watch one of your videos then work on my own projects a bit, progress is being made. Thank you.

ANYONE can face a clutter disaster after an appliance breakdown! Especially if you also have young children. I love keeping my house tidy, but when I am faced with something like a kitchen remodel, or a big sorting project, or even just a super busy week, it can be tornado time! A laundry room exploding would throw even the neatest person’s house into disarray. You did great!!

I have literally never been able to organize and clean my home. If there is stuff in it, it just piles on surfaces. It’s something pathological that I don’t care to spend time working on or fixing so I eliminated it and have next to nothing. I’m older and this has been the only way forward for me . Best to everyone on their own unique path to happy home spaces.

It really does help to have the timer because I can almost gamify the process by seeing how much I can get done before the buzzer. My brain works best on competition, even it is just against myself, so anything I can do to make the task more game like is a win! 😂❤

Great video! You have such a pleasant voice and your instruction and humility are so nice! I am an empty nester and still struggle with everyday clutter. I also struggle with all of my storage spaces. It does get easier though! Something I just learned, funky smelling clothing and linens can be soaked for several hours in a bucket of warm water with a cup of baking soda. I have even gotten that pillowcase funk smell out!

I battle any and all clutter, even small amt 's by tossing o in the dumpster. That's me. If my home was cluttered, people would be very concerned. I've never understood clothes on the floor, I came from long lineages of organized, zero clutter, everything has its place. Now having said that, I have a couple of friends that live in complete clutter, I don't judge, I accept and they are wonderful human beings. You got sick and no one helped you... Apparently you are the only one in the home that cleans. I buy NO dust collectors, thats extremely helpful.

New friend here! I also get distracted if I try to put each item away as I go. The next thing I know is that I somehow have a bigger mess. I'm making progress with giving each room a "job" and only putting things related to that in that area. A bit slower than some methods, but at least things are closer to where they belong. It's easier for me to declutter when similar things are together. You're an inspiration to keep going. 🤗

One of my favorite memes is the reminder I suffer from "HSD - Horizontal Surface Disorder". That means I will put STUFF on any flat surface I run across. It sounds so much better than beating myself up for being "lazy, disorganized, distracted, etc". I do pick up, clear off and reorganize regularly, but it only takes half a day for it to start all over again - on ANY flat space in my house. I've found that some good LOUD rock & roll music also makes the cleaning easier.

I understand the stress of having a family with kids and I have two with special needs and oh boy the stress. Some days I feel paralyzed. I still get up and move. I have a quote by me the says ' nobody's coming to save you, get up and make it happen'.. tough words but it's true. We are the keepers of the home and it's what we make it. I think you are doing a fine job! Tackling it a bit at a time is just the way, I do the same thing. Breathing, good smells, good lighting[ not yellow lighting but bright lighting ] helps so much. Great job! Suggestion - shelf over the washer & dryer with small plastic laundry baskets across it. Baskets are labeled and people take their dirty laundry and towels DIRECTLY to the tubs. Laundry is already sorted this way and you have no laundry baskets or carts to deal with. In general, people need more side tables and shelving than they think.

I appreciate this video and totally agree with Jaime. A large portion of the cleaning videos you see are of homes that look nothing like mine. Really, changing your bedsheets and making your bed is considered “cleaning”. The minimalistic approach is not for everyone. I collect Fenton and depression glass. My husband collect Marvel and DC statues. I’m also a scrapbooker/journal/card maker (talk about a crowded room - 😂). Jaime TFS a real home.

You got this! Definitely do not give up! Even if it’s for 10 minutes, just spend a few minutes when you can. One thing I have learned is to break things into chunks. So like if my kitchen is out of control, I will say to myself, “We are going to clean the counter by the fridge.” Then once that is done I may assign another chunk or I may walk away for a minute. Next might be just unloading the dishwasher. Oddly enough I learned this from my Kiddos Occupational Therapist. She explained that for brains like his and mine, saying I am going to clean the kitchen doesn’t work because that involves 57 steps. However I we break down those 57 steps into individual tasks, it makes it much more manageable. ❤️ And I am by no means an expert, clearly. Just relaying what works for me when I get so very overwhelmed, which is frequently.

@@coffeecarbsclutter brains like mine too🫣 My favorite line in your video was.. if I move something into the area where it belongs, I just need to leave it there and go back to the original area where I was working (or something similar). OMG! I just stumbled across this video and was horrified at the amount of clutter. There is no way I could live like that for more than a day. It would drive me insane. I know this sounds like criticism, but it isn't. It motivated me to get off my butt and go vacuum, sweep and mop my floors, which I have needed to do for over a week. It just goes to show that if you procrastinate for too long about cleaning, it builds up really fast and can happen to anyone. It looks like you have a beautiful home underneath all the clutter and I'm so proud of you for tackling the mess and creating a cozy, welcoming space again for you and your family. Good job!
