Anyone who has the courage to commit their version to a commercial recording is an absolute hero/heroine as far as I am concerned. I have 3 recordings - Baumann (but not this one), Tuckwell and Halstead - I love them all. I sound just like them all - in the bars' rests!

I was privileged to attend a master class with Herr Baumann and he stressed over and over again that any musician was there to pay homage to the music. MUSIC! MUSIC! MUSIC! Practice? Of course but less stress on you as the performer and on what kind of horn you have and what bells and whistles it has.

By "singing" you mean literally singing while playing? I hear what sounds like his vocalizing a harmony with his playing around 7:40 plus and minus. Sure sounds like it. Kind of funny to hear in a recording like he's sort of fooling around.

it's a part of the piece! weber wrote vocal harmony for the player to sing while playing in the horn part.

Oh... First time I ever heard of such a thing. As a teen, I used to play around with vocalizing harmony (badly) 50+ years ago with my cornet... didn't know such tricks were ever performed in a serious piece till now.

Baumann is a master! I absolutely love this piece as well, and it's probably my fav horn piece of all time, but listening to it now, I totally forgot how stupid that high C sounds at 4:54. Baumann manages to make it sound more natural that most would be able to, but it's still such a ridiculous and out-of-place-sounding flourish in my ears. Last movement is still flawless in writing and execution, though.

Yes Charles, l can't imagine what Denis Brain would have made of this work. However l DO know that he never played the Konzertstuck for 4 horns. Apparently, he said that he would not base his reputation on high notes. So it is possible that he simply didn't like 'show pieces' for horn, of which the Weber is one. Denis is my favourite hornist of all time. He never overplayed or over-interpretted , yet his playing was virtually perfect and ethereal. Oh yes, and he tounged everything - never slurred! Having said all that, Bauman's playing is unbelievably good, and he's 'up there' with the best of them. Personally l prefer Halstead's hand-horn performance, mainly because he makes an 'English' sound'. I never attempted this work. Richard Duckett of Team Brass

For a good horn player It's a pretty hard--you have to account all the phrases,the expression that the soloist (he/she will put into the piece),and make sure that you are playing with a crisp sound and keeping the notes(and articulation) true to the piece.

@apfelsnutz4 жыл бұрын
Of course, you sing into the horn. But most important is the TAMBRE of your voice,,, not all of us can pull it off. Compare Baumann and Barborak... even the harmonics come out differently...LOL ! When I was playing professionally in Europe, I practiced this piece incessantly for about 6 months, but would never try to perform it...Hah ! Bravo !
@webusch34 жыл бұрын
@@apfelsnutz Haha, this was from seven years ago, I had completely forgotten about it. I actually figured out how to do harmony on the horn since then, but the middle b part at the end of the cadenza is quite challenging - though I haven't yet practiced it truly. How did the piece feel after 6 months? Any better? Also, for all those that wonder how to do polyphonic - play a note (low usually) and while the air is sustaining the note, hum (the other 'harmonies' are there by nature of like-vibrations when the right note is hummed on top of the pedal note - it's a phenomenon one can hear on a piano if one plays a low open 5th chord, listen for the major 3rd softly vibrating in a higher octave.)

@AFGalopp6 жыл бұрын
Veramente è un tempo normalissimo per una polacca... seconda cosa, la cadenza coi "multiphonics" come li chiami tu è presente già nel manoscritto olografo di Weber.

Tbh, he's good, but his tone when he plays fast with articulation is pretty awful. It's so brassy, unclean and unclear. In my opinion, Radek Baborak is much better because he always makes a good sound and never has a nasty edge to his articulated notes.
@AFGalopp8 жыл бұрын
+Joseph Longstaff Well, Weber is the first exponent of demoniac romanticism. His fast articulations and his tone expression aren't made to be eroic, they have to be scary. For me, this interpretation is maybe the best we can find on youtube!
