blog.BavAuto.com -- Most people think that because BMW and MINI call their transmission fluids "Lifetime" or "Extended Service" it doesn't have to be changed. Not true. To get the most out of your transmission and avoid a costly, catastrophic failure, you should change the fluid and filter every 50,000 miles. Watch Bavarian Otto demonstrate how to do this on a BMW E39 (5 series 97 thru 03). You'll find the specific fluid and filter your BMW/MINI needs in our online store at www.BavAuto.com.

When the pan is drained, you are removing around 1/2 of the fluid from the transmission. If the fluid being removed has high mileage or is visibly nasty, we do recommend a second fluid drain and fill (without removing the pan again) after running the transmission long enough for the old and new fluid to mix (some may take a 3rd time to be really clear and clean).. Once, the fluid is clean and clear, you next scheduled change can just be a normal single drain and filter.

Wajid Furgan - We can't reply directly to your comment as it was sent in via Google. Running the engine in a low gear and a higher engine RPM can certainly increase oil usage. However, you may have a problem with the crankcase ventilation system, which can increase the oil usage. You may have a ruptured check-valve diaphragm or clogged oil-separator. As for the transmission, we would suggest changing the fluid/filter as a first step.

The reason for further drain-refills is to get a higher percentage of fresh fluid into the trans. There is no problem mixing the old and new fluid. However, when we drain the pan, we are only getting about 1/3 to 1/2 of the old fluid out. The rest of the fluid is still in the trans. We add the new fluid and it all gets mixed (which is fine), Successive drain-fills will achieve a higher percentage of fresh fluid. We typically do this when the fluid has not been changed for a long time.

After the first fill the car should be run and cycled through the gears, it should then be drained again and refilled. This will help to clear most of the old fluid from the torque converter etc.

Kon Nyuk Chang you don't want to flush that fluid… That could cause some loose particles to break free and cause a worse clog.
@paullahi2091
@paullahi2091 6 жыл бұрын
It is best to increase the oil change interval. If the fluid is red or pink no burnish it is good. You can do a flush but the flushers often add solvents which is a contaminant. The only true recommended flush is with the exact fluid. If you change it like this and have no metals or burnt fluid you are good. As bad as this transmission was you could re change the fluid and filter by a month or mile schedule...several months or several thousand miles and it would be as good or better than a flush. It would address the concern you have about the fluid...capacity is around 9 quarts and he changed what 5? so you are doing well with two changes.

Assuming that you have the proper plug removed for the fill plug, If you have the engine running and have moved the shifter through the gears and back to PARK, it will be full when the fluid runs out of the fill hole. The fill plug is above the pan, at the rear, on the left side (facing forward). This trans typically takes about 8-liters in US models.

RE: 2007 328i with GM L45R transmission. This was very helpful. According to REDLINE their D6 ATF exceeds the requirements of BMW ATF for the GM green tag L45R. They also said REDLINE was fully compatible as it is nearly impossible to get all of the old fluid out. I was able to get access to a lift otherwise its impractical to DIY. Followed this video and performed the service. Trans shifts normally after service.

There is also fluid left within the transmission and the torque converter. If the changes are done regularly, all of the fluid will eventually be cycled out. However, if the drained fluid is quite nasty (as this was), we would run the engine for a bit (or drive the car around the block, or something) and then perform another fluid change (without dropping the pan).
@bavarianautosport
@bavarianautosport 12 жыл бұрын
The transmissions on the later BMWs (such as the E60 5-series) look different, but the procedures are similar. One difference, of note, on the latest BMW models (those using the GA6HP 6-speed variants) is that the filter is incorporated into the fluid pan. Therefore, when you change the filter, you actually change the fluid pan. The drain plug is in the bottom of the pan and the fill plug is on the transmission, just above the pan, driver's side, toward the rear (like the one in the video).

As long as you are using the proper fill plug location, you cannot overfill the transmission, as the fluid will pour out the fill hole when it is full. Go ahead and add more and don't forget the have the engine running.
@bavarianautosport
@bavarianautosport 11 жыл бұрын
Your E30 3-series will have the 4HP22 automatic transmission. This transmission has a fluid dip-stick (under the hood). You will fill the transmission through the dip-stick tube (with a fluid funnel). Since you can't just fill until fluid comes out of the fill hole (as in the video), you will have to add a bit at a time, then use the dip-stick to check the fluid level. Once the fluid is at the FULL mark, start the engine and continue adding fluid until it is at full with the engine running.

If you go to our web site, we will only show you the fluids that have been specifically approved to match the original fluid, by the transmission manufacturers. We have always recommended ONLY the fluid that is specifically approved by either BMW or the transmission manufacturer. The Texaco fluid used in this transmission is the original fluid fill that BMW used. Additionally, the Lifeguard5 fluid is now specifically approved by the transmission manufacturer. We now carry the Lifeguard5 as the standard fill (as well as the other proper fluids for other model transmissions.

On vehicles that do not have a dip-stick, you remove the fill-plug and the fluid level should be at the bottom of the hole (where the plug was threaded in). NOTE: you MUST have the engine running when the plug is removed and the fluid level is checked. If you remove the plug when the engine is not running, you will dump at least a quart of fluid.

If you remove the fill plug when the engine is not running, you will typically lose between 1 to 1-1/2 quarts of fluid. The fluid fill is performed with the engine running.

Yes, change the fluid and filter. If you have concerns due to various banter on the internet or the local service garage that implies that you should not do so, check out all of our replies to the various comments on both Part-1 and Part-2 of these videos. Really a good step by step demo. I have 100K miles on my 2004 X3 and it's not shifting properly. Two mechanics have shed no light. I may just try to change the fluid and see what happens.

You can typically just use a rag to wipe the magnet clean, then spray it wit brake parts cleaner and give it final wipe with a clean rag. Torque on the pan bolts is typically about 10 to 15 ftlbs. The applicable Bentley repair manual will give the values.

You could apply the sealant (same as the Permatex Rubber Gasket Treatment and Sealant # 85409, that we offer), but this particular gasket is spec'ed to go on without sealant and we do not typically have leakage issues after the new gaskets are installed. A common use for this sealant it the half-round bumps on the rubber valve cover gaskets. Go to our online store at bavauto.com to purchase the Permatex sealant.

Great job. The German engineers made it hard to change fluid by putting the refill plug at such a low level rather than at a regular higher level with a dipstick for routine checkups!

The A5S-325Z transmission in your 2003 530i, was originally filled with the Esso LT-71-141 fluid. We now have this as the LIFEGUARD5 fluid from ZF. This fluid is specifically approved by ZF for use in this ZF transmission. You'll need 7 liters (fill is specified as 6.2 liters). Just go to our online store at bavauto.com and enter the LIFEGUARD5 part number after identifying your year and model. You can also call our advisors at 800-535-2002.

Awesome helpfull video. I was afraid to touch my BMW X5 but was able to change my own trans Kit myself. For under 150$ my x5 runs really smooth. Trans oil had not been changed for10 yrs. black like used motor oil. It was nice to save a few bucks with a true feeling of accomplishment.

Thanks for the good words, Pedro. We would suggest that if the oil was very dirty (as you noted) to perform another fluid drain & fill (without removing the pan).

Our first thought is that he fluid is not up to full. Did you finish filling with the engine running?

Anyway thanks for the video. I would like to just say that it world be wise to clean the bottom of the transmission with brake fluid just to get the rest of the small metal bits off and then put on the filter. You also have to check to see if the temperature does not go above 50 deg C as specified by ZF in germany. You are to continue with putting it in manual up to 3rd gear which you have not specified, which would absorb more of the oil and you would require more transmission fluid. The ZF 5HP19 requires 9.2 Liters but all the kits come with 7 liters, I wonder why. If you over fill you will have a problem with the transmission and that goes with if you underfill.

My 330i had 55,000 miles on it and it took four drain and fills before the color started becoming normal color. Then I dropped the pan and installed a new filter.
