Bayerische Staatsoper Season 2024/2025 (The Bavarian State Opera; Munich, Germany)

The Bayerische Staatsoper has announced its 2024-25 season.
Tobias Krazter directs a new production of Wagner’s “Das Rheingold” with Nicholas Brownlee, Sean Panikkar, Ekaterina Gubanova. Vladimir Jurowski conducts. Damiano Michieletto directs Donizetti’s “La Fille du Régiment” with Pretty Yende, Lisette Oropesa, Susan Graham, Xabier Anduaga, Lawrence Brownlee, and Misha Kiria. Stefano Montanari condcuts.Strauss’ “Die Liebe der Danae” will star Christopher Maltman, Malin Byström, and Andreas Schager. Sebastian Weigle conducts the new production by Claus Guth. Janáček’s “Kát’a Kabanová” will showcase Corrine Winters in the title role alongside Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla conducting. The new production will be directed byKrzysztof Warlikowski and will also star Milan Siljanov, Pavel Černoch, Violeta Urmana, and John Daszak.Daniele Rustioni and Andrea Battistoni lead “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci” in a new production by Francesco Micheli. The cast for Mascagni’s work will include Yulia Matochkina, Ekaterina Semenchuk, Vittorio Grigolo, Wolfgang Koch. Meanwhile, the cast for Leoncavallo’s work will star Ailyn Pérez, Jonas Kaufmann. Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” will be directed by David Hermann and will be conducted by Vladimir Jurowski. The cast will include Konstantin Krimmel, Christof Fischesser, Vera-Lotte Boecker, Giovanni Sala.Fauré’s “Pénélope” will star Brandon Jovanovich, Victoria Karkacheva. Susanna Mälkki conducts the new Production by Andrea Breth.

A long line of operas. Some really ugly stagings,especially Aida. German theaters can afford to present many operas because they are subsidized by the government. American theaters depend on raising their money thru attendance or private donations.

I saw Aida there last year and, in more than 50 years of opera going, it was the first time for me that Aida made sense. Instead of beimg a rather tacky pseudo-Egyptian traveloque, it was a powerful and visceral commentry on war and its affect on real people. Go and see it for yourself.

@@metacarple I saw Aida in Cairo in 1991. That was the funniest experience of my life: the orchestra played terribly wrong, the stagehands were still working on a papier-mâché statue that wasn't standing when the curtain went up, and so on. Of course, I also went to the Munich State Opera a few times as a student, but I'm not so much into opera and prefer concerts. So the Gasteig and the Herkulessaal - and of course the Pollinger Bibliothekssaal in my home village - were my favorite venues.
