In this one part episode (without Qs in part 2), we look back at Arsenal's Champions League exit, going down 1-0 to Bayern Munich last night.
Once again, the second half was below par and we paid the price. We examine the reasons as to why that has been an issue in our last two games, and what Mikel Arteta can do about it in terms of his squad building going forward. There's chat about fatigue and heavy legs, the players we brought on from the bench and the players who stayed on it, what we can learn from this European campaign, how this collective probably needs a smattering of individualism for big games like last night, the striker discussion, and lots more.

When James said 'Alexis Sanchez' - This is exactly what I was thinking since ten minutes ago - Alexis Sanchez, Andrei Arshavin, you need a few of these game changers in your squad - they won't track back to protect the full back - but they also are individualistic, don't care a lot about systems, have a healthy disregard for what the gaffer says - you need a few of these in your squad that come alive when the chips are down

One of the more sensible comments which is always nice to see. We used to get stuffed by Bayern so I think the result and performance wasn't bad at all. Overall this season I'm really happy so far, players have given it everything they have and that's all you can ask, still think we lack quality in depth to play 3 games every week though

Pre match press conference Tuchel basically broke down how we were going to set up/play… low and behold he got it spot on. Unai Emery didn’t have to tactically change anything against us to beat us at home. Arteta’s lack of trust in certain players and inability to change is blatantly holding us back and has done for the third season in a row. Good young manager but questions have to be asked about our April collapses.
@AJAddy
@AJAddy 26 күн бұрын
I agree. Usually, by April, opposing managers have seen enough of your games to figure you out. Arteta has very few “wrinkles” or “tricks up his sleeve” to compete right thru to May, it seems.

A few thoughts: - Losing to Bayern (and not even showing up really) is fine, losing to Villa with that display and then Bayern and crumble when push comes to shove is not fine. And it's becoming our DNA. - Saka is not great, not off form, he's not great. - Rice is normal, and tired... very tired... - Arteta is stubborn, had he played hungry players not complacent players he would've gotten a game. He should've played Martinelli, Jesus, Vieira and Rice, Partey, Ode. (Impact subs: Saka, Trossard, Havertz, ESR). - Next season is make or break. This summer we buy everyone and everything (that if people are still convinced by our project - I'd think twice about joining Arsenal, a team on the up that just doesn't quite have it), next season a trophy needs to come, doesn't matter which one but Carabao, FA, UCL, PL. If nothing happens, thanks Arteta, you've resuscitated us but you're not it. - Arteta can do a million things he just doesn't. Why isn't Nketiah starting as CF at home, ever? Did everyone forget how he came in to deputise last year? Why aren't ESR, Vieira starting. Vieira and Nelli have to play together. Why isn't Zinchenko playing in midfield? - I'm tired of hearing young squad, City 115 charges blabla. Leverkusen did it. We only had to beat Villa. Nothing to do with City. We failed. We did. Not City being a juggernaut. Our shortcomings....

We get to this point in the season every year and people start talking about injuries, fatigue, knock all the same crap. It's just what a team look like when they can't rise to the pressure. Anyone who's felt the heavy legs walking up to take a penalty in an important shoot-out knows the feeling. You're physically fine but you feel like you legs are made of wood. This team don't deal with it well, the forward players shy away. Don't be afraid to talk about it Blogs. It's natural.
@adventurerwannabe

This 100%. I think the players need to stand up and be counted at the business end of the season. We just didn't want it as much as Bayern did on that night. Plain and simple. If we wanted it enough everything would have fallen into place. I would loved to have seen some of our players take a few cards, get into a few arguments - I'm sorry but the body language was just not there.

Exactly this. I feel like the squad is also comfortable knowing that people will make this excuse for them. At this rate, all our current players will leave before we win anything and it'll be the start of the decline again

We need a "chaos merchant." Sanchez, Suarez, that type of player. Our version is Marinelli. Do we have the maverick match winner talent? No. We also don't have a Musiala who can penetrate on the dribble and move past players with ease in the middle of the park. I wonder if we have a manager who allows that expression as well. We are young, we have time, yet the final 1% hurdle that is the difference between trophies and first loser is the very, very hardest step to take. Time will tell if we take that next and final step, or not, with this group. Who can we add in the summer to put us over the final line?

@@SueMyChin We have the players until we don't. It is easy to tell who Arteta trusts and rotation shows it is a select few. At this level, in this tie, Sane and Musiala and Kane won the tie. Our players did not. I think if we are being real; if the goal is "domination" like Arteta says that includes winning the premier league and Champions league eventually and I think we are just about 3 major players away or 2 major players away with better fitness at RB and LB. I do not for one second believe Arteta believes we are there, I think he is in Phase 3 of a 5 phase project.

We went out like a whimper, our attack didn't turn up and cannot be relied upon to bring major silverware, it's time for Arteta to make use of his squad, get rid of the dross in the summer and sign level raisers in midfield/attack. If Arteta doesn't bring Arsenal a EPL or UCL trophy by Summer 2025 then we will have to ask difficult questions on Arteta's tenure at Arsenal (plus the ridiculous spending) and whether or not he is the right man to help get Arsenal over the line in the business end of the season and winning major silverware. This is Arsenal football club, not Arteta FC.
