Welcome to the first video in our new series! I've purchased a 1988 Bayliner 2455 for $600, which will be the vessel for the next leg of our journey on the Great Loop.
The boat was in rough shape, but in this video, we begin the cleanup process. You'll be amazed at how much a thorough cleaning can transform this boat. Join us as we dive into the restoration, which will include installing new carpet, an engine, cabinets, a hard top, solar panels, and much more.
Stay tuned for this boating adventure! #greatloop #boatingadventure

A boat like that in the UK ,with an engine (even not running) would be going for a country mile more than $600, that's the one thing I miss about living in Florida, cheap, well-made, bulky boats

There is some thought behind it. Bayliner is a very popular boat. They produced a ton of them. I really like the lines and was looking for the 26 with the hardtop but couldn't find one for the right price. Second is that boat is very searchable in google. When I complete all the project planned, this series will be great for my channel. :}

You were right! I didn't think there was a 2455 worse than where mine started. lol Like ya said though little by little it will come back to life. There were a few times on mine I thought what a mess I got into but as things come together you get more driven. And when its done you will know it from top to bottom and know its done right. I love the design but the only thing I really wish it had was the wet head. I wish I had tried to install one when I had it torn apart. It looks rough but there is so much potential I'm sure you will turn it into an amazing boat If you have any questions let me know ill be glad to help.

Congrats on the boat, this is exactly what I have done on Long Island. I got my boat dirt cheap and worked on it, cleaned it up, etc.. One of my friends was convinced that I had bought another boat when he saw mine at the dock a couple years later, he thought I was pulling his leg because I painted and polished the boat, it looked new. I also have the same outdrive, OMC Cobra. I know a lot about those outdrives so just shoot me a message if you need help with it. I have the damn king cobra, they are super rare now with the 7.5l ford. 350 cobra version still has most parts available. The whole reason these boats are sold cheap when the hull is perfectly good, the damn owners are too dumb to maintain them.. It costs over 200 grand to get a boat like mine brand new, completely insane..
@CaptainMike1965

Yes I agree, I will have effectively a new boat when complete. Although I am switching out the 305 for a 350 and converting the outdrive to SEI similar to Mercruiser.

No way I'd do the Great Loop in this boat. I've had a '87 2450 for over 20 years so I know the boat well. Great weekend boat for 2 people, but just too small for extended stays. No hot water and the cold has hand pumped faucets. Tough to wash your hands when one of them has to pump the water. I replaced the 2 faucets and installed an electric pump just for that reason. You will run out of water pretty quickly as it only has an 11 gallon tank. Same size for the waste tank which fills up even quicker. There's virtually no counter space, the kitchen is very cramped. No generator so creature comforts like A/C are out of the question. Fuel tank is only 55 gallons which limits your range considerably. I'd launch mine in Calumet Harbor (southern tip of Lake Michigan on Illinois side), run around the tip of the lake and back up the east coast to the warm water beach around the Indiana/Michigan border. Hang out for the day at the dunes then cut across to downtown Chicago for the July 3rd firework show. I would have to fuel the boat up @ Burnham Harbor to assure I had a reasonable amount of reserve fuel to make the run back down to Calumet Harbor. The weather on the Great Lakes can change very quickly, and in the summertime storms will build without being forecast. If you get caught up in bad weather and high waves, you'll go thru a LOT of fuel. Another problem that plagued me on that boat (and most boats for that matter) was a decent vacuum. I probably tried close to a dozen 12V vacuums and they were all pretty useless. They don't pick up heavy stuff like sand very well and you spend way too much time trying to use them. Probably the biggest issue was the OMC Cobra outdrive. Mine failed, had a very difficult time finding rebuilt units. Finally found one out of Florida for $4000, installed it, and it's leaked water into the gearbox ever since. Rebuilder would warranty it but required me to ship it back to him at my cost. It was cheaper for me to buy the gaskets/seals and do it myself. Never got around to it, decided to go a different route. Still have the boat, shame, way better condition than this one sitting on a good trailer, and I'd of sold it for $2000. Only real issues with it is the coons got into the cockpit and tore-up the L-lounge seat and the interior cushions are dry-rotting. I fixed all the leaks on it so the interior isn't too bad. The side windows and front hatch are notorious leakers on these boats. After the coons got the lounge I started getting some leaking into the aft cabin area from around the mounting screws so they got sealed. The bow pulpit was rotted so I pulled that off and replaced the bad wood. My solution: I bought a bigger boat! None of that 2 foot-itis, I got 6 foot-itis and bought a 30' Doral Prestancia that solved all my issues (but added a few). Holds just over 130 gallons of fuel, I think the water tank is 34 gallons with an 11 gallon hot water heater, 26 gallon waste tank, twin 4.3L Chevy's driving Mercruiser outdrives, 3.3kW generator, Heat/AC, microwave, and the best feature: a Central Vacuum!!!! It's made by Tiger-Vac which specializes in industrial vacuums. It also has a dedicated front berth so you don't have to break down the table to make up the front berth which was always a PITA. I added a couple of 100w solar panels that help keep the house batteries up. I have 2 refrigerators running all the time. One panel wasn't enough to keep them running and put a bit of charge in the batteries so I added a 2nd which keeps up nicely on sunny days. I boat a bit different, I try to spend 1-2 weeks on the boat for the 3 big summer holidays anchored in a cove. My sister has an 18' SeaRay that we use for playing, fishing, and as a taxi to shuttle visitors back and forth to the ramp. Downside is the maintenance of all the additional systems and winterizing all of it. I'm like you, fully capable of doing all maintenance/repairs myself so it isn't that bad. If I actually had to pay somebody to do it all, it would be cost prohibitive. I still wouldn't want to try the Great Loop in my Prestancia, I think even it's too small for that trip.

Size wise, it could be a litter bigger. The section of the loop from Tampa to Chesapeake I have already completed was done on a 32' Carver. A boat like that is right at the limit of single handling. This size boat is easy to dock and manage a locks as there will be a lot of them on the next leg of the loop. As far as me loosing my mind, you wouldn't be the first person who thought that lol My ex would agree with that! :)

Mike I did inspect the hull a good bit. That was the most thing I was concerned about. Sometime soon, I will put the plug in and run it down to the lake just to be sure.

I had a Bayliner 246 Discovery - roughly the same layout. It had limitations for a solo looper so I sold it. The things that bothered me were solo anchoring - no quick access to the bow, and I couldn’t reach the mid cleat from the helm for solo docking / locks. Good luck. I’ve had three Bayliners.

Pull the engine and drive, glass and support the transom and mount an outboard bracket with swim platform on it. Get a good used outboard and controls and move on. The engine compartment becomes a huge locker.
@CaptainMike1965
@CaptainMike1965 Жыл бұрын
Brad I thought a good bit about that but the price of new engine is around 10 to 12 thousand. I wouldn't trust buying a used engine on that long of a trip and that is to much for just the engine. I won't have much more than that in the project and I will have a new rebuilt engine I can trust. I am also putting in a new I/O. Good points tho, I will add these statements in on the next livestream.
